The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    Windows 8.1 is not assigning drive letters for my external drives

    I've been on a clean install of win 8.1 for a few days now . The last couple of days I've noticed that my USB external drives, thumb drives etc are not getting assigned drive letters. Disk management recognizes the drives and I can assign drive letters. they will retain the assigned drive letters and work well. but on first insertion they do not get assigned drive letters???? Any Ideas UPDATE: Found out I got 5 bad SanDisk USB thumb drives, return them to Amazon, and reordered SanDisk different part.
