I have an G53JW-A1 I cloned the drive. Now when I try to use windows update I get a message windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer. I have tried to restart my computer and its not working. In msconfig under services it shows its running. How do I fix it?

Is the installed OS activated? You can check on the Computer/Properties page...scroll to the bottom.

I had everything updated and activated it was the way I wanted it. I backed up the date with Acronis and recovered to a new HDD and windows was still activated but windows update would not run. I searched online last night and actually found a fix. Microsoft Fix it 50202 and I had to run it in aggressive mode but it worked.
