I finally have it! I'm so happy! It's perfect. I just played Combat Arms on high settings and it was AMAZING. Real shocking for someone that's been using integrated graphics for the past few years.
I'm glad to be part of the club! Any tips for a newbie like me?

Note that i won't be using this for gaming, officially. This will be for my web design and other things like that. But I do plan on gaming.

Check GPU temps with GPU-Z and run the stability test with Furmark to make sure it runs well. Not sure what the return policy is like where you got it from but you'd be better off looking for defects now and getting a direct replacement from where you bought it instead of having to RMA in the future.

In addition to checking temps, I would install Catalyst 10.6, play some games, and see if you get GSODs (sudden freezing on solid or striped colored screens). It's better to find out now and be able to return/replace it rather than getting a nasty surprise down the road. :)

    Congrats and good luck! :D

Forgot about the owner's lounges. Heh, I always forget about them.
Any mod in the neighborhood? Go ahead and move this over there I suppose.
Thanks for all the replies! I'll be sure to do that.

Not sure what a regular install of 10.6 over stock will do for you but for me I get slowed boot times and random freezes. Try this if you have any problems.

    1- Uninstall ATI drivers
    2- reboot in safe mode
    3- run ccleaner registry fix
    4- reboot in safe mode
5- run drive sweeper and remove any ATI stuff.
    6- reboot normally.
7 Install new version of driver.

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx - There's a guide on the bottom of that page to uninstalling old drivers if you need it.

Kaelang, Real happy for you, buddy. :)

Like everyone suggests, before you try to update anything, please first see what versions you are running. Bios, vBios, CCC etc.

If everything is running perfect, I wouldn't suggest you install Catalyst 10.6. You can see that many people who did, arent exactly happy with it. IMO, if everything works, Dont try to fix anything.
But a clean windows install is a good idea. Uninstalling all bloatware is equally good if you dont want a clean install. Your call.

Flashing to Bios 209 is a good idea. Fixes a lot of quirks in the machine. But remember, use EZFlash and not that Winflash crap from the Win7 if you want to keep your keyboard lights. :p

A lot of info on clean windows install and bloatwares can be had from David's Bloatware guide here or Kalim's Fresh OS install guide here.

If you feel like checking whether you got a good unit or a lemon, Try running Unigine Heaven Bench.
Also keep GPU-Z, HWInfo32 and AMD GPU tool installed to check the performance & temps of your new machine.

    My 2 cents. :D

If you need anything, Ask in here and everyone is more than happy to help you out with your queries.

Glad you like it. I love mine, even if it is the watered down version. Coming from my now secondary MR 3650 DDR2, the 5870 performance is absolutely amazing. I can run Crysis on max, at native resolution, (no AA), without lag, and I have never been able to do that.

I almost cried tears of joy when I saw Crysis on Very High settings, without lag.

    WRONG!!!

The gsod issue if you get any is not a reason to return your laptop. Gsods and Bsods are caused by bad drivers or perhaps an improper install or registry issues. I had the previous 10.6 and had many issues with gsod, a simple overclock fixed that issue. Now I have installed the latest 10.6 and I'm about test it now to see if I get any issues without oc on but I suspect it will pay fine. If it doesn't, I'll just oc again, and maybe install the latest bios.
