I don't think it is worth it unless you do hifi photoshop work and video editting and stuff cuz i think the 720 is a dual core processor (not sure) whereas the 740 is a quad core processor but even then, I don't think it'll be such an improvement. Plus I've read so many forums where people have overclocked the 720 whereas noone has overclocked a 740qm.

The 720 is not a dual core its a i7 chip

Bodycount im sure you have seen me preach it so it is only right I preach it again to you! The extra 100mhz is a waste of time it will not show any visible difference only a flicker of the eye you could double or triple that just by paying $5 and getting SETFSB I managed 1.9ghz stable with my 720qm.

XM XM XM! Its all about the XM baby.

    920XM Purchase

    Leads to...

    920XM 8mb 2.0ghz - 3.2ghz Unlocked Extreme Awesomeness - £208 / $340 Delivered.

    Leads to...

    3DMark06 P16269 +

+ higher temps and obscene clocks.

If you see a cheap 840QM around then that is quite a good deal because of the higher overclockability clocks and 8mb Cache but the XM is the way to go.

Ya i have that program but i don't know how to use it i just thot for $100 would be a cheap upgrade i think i can get the CPU for $60 to $70 bucks.

Not worth it. Save up a little more and get a 920/940xm.

Not worth it, you would see no difference and if you did think there was a difference it would all be mind tricks because 100mhz is not enough to be a worthy upgrade. When you have the XM running 3.2ghz over all 4 cores 8 threads at one time instead of it clocking down to 1.73ghz on 4 cores. That is when you see a difference, a very warm difference :) not to mention how fantastic the Turbo Boost guage looks at 4ghz when you push it to the limit! :D

A simple test to prove this - turn on the Twin Turbo button.

    I rest my case.

If you have not tried to overclock it yet that is your first point of call mate most see at least 1.8ghz out of the 720QM and the temperature difference is minimal I think mine only raises 3 or 4 degrees when I ran it at 1.9ghz the 720QM is a cool chip.

Still it does not make up for a 920XM and be warned once you get the overclock bug with the CPU you will not stop till you get more power :D haha!

Any problems PM me but my vid should cover everything you need ;)

So basically, has anyone tried overclocking a 740qm? If so, how much has it been pushed to? I think i say someone with a 740qm overclocked to 1.9GHz. Not sure though.

    sorry. My bad.

    Anyway. It's not worth upgrading from a 720qm to a 740qm.

If you read the link above that I posted you will understand why no one can tell you how much the 740QM can handle because every chip is different in its ability to overclock.

The chip 720qm and 740qm are exactly the same CPU the only difference is the 740qm has slightly higher clocks that is all. The overclocking ability differs from every chip the only way to find out high it can clock is to try and test it yourself.

I've gotten a 740QM up to 1.9, and with TurboBoost, it will get that extra multiplier and go to 2.0-2.1

Okay. So i guess I'll try overclocking and post the results. My high temps were stopping me.

Does overclocking give much of a performance increase? For instance, if i'm playing gta4 at 30 FPS, and i overclocked the cpu to 1.9, or 2.0, what kind of FPS would i be getting then?

Also, how much different would it be by O'Cing my GPU?

    Sorry for Noobishness :p

Overclocking the CPU will help in CPU intensive games like GTA IV. it is hard to say what exact performance increases you will see. Just give overclocking a try and see if the performance increase is worth it for you.

I noticed a minimal difference really having my 720QM running at 2ghz.

Buy an XM. Then you will see a difference....hold on a minute its Turner! wait a while before buying one you only just got your laptop :p

If you can buy a 920QM, buy it. I so wish i could but being a student and that too, in India, it's way out of my budget.
