Could someone owns Zephyrus Laptop tell me if this machine can switch Optimus / G-Sync via BIOS? Especially the GX501 2018 model.

I know that it can be switched from ROG Gaming Centre dashboard in Windows 10, but I need to decide whether to buy this laptop or not, depending on if the two features can be switched in the BIOS level. As I am going to install Mac OS X on this laptop, disabling Optimus is nessisary.

I learne this picture from the asus zephyrus user manual, could some one open the Graphics Configuration tag in the Advance tab of the BIOS Settings and tell me which options it has?

    Many thanks!

Hi, I will receive mine the 17th so I will be able to answer at that time ^^.
By the way, I'm doing all my MacOS stuff on a virtual machine (VirtualBox). I didn't know it was possible to install it directly on the hardware. Do you have some good tutorials?

I've already got mine and have confirmed that there are no graphic configurations option in the BIOS settings :( . I am hopping that switching to G-Sync in Windows would keep the setting in a hardware level (remains at that status), but I don't count on it.

Another way of installing Mac OS using virtual machine is by unRaid virtualization (supported by Lime Technology). This way of virtualization has the advantage that I can assign 4 cores of CPU out of 6 (for example), and assign the NVIDIA dedicated GPU directly to virtual machine while the host system only uses integrated Intel GPU, so that the virtual machine won't lose any performance, unlike other virtualization software.

About installing Mac OS directly on the hardware, I don't have a complete tutorial of doing it. All I can do is to try install it by myself using Clover to boot and solve each problems I would encounter by looking up the Hackintosh forums like "tonymacx86.com". However, I do have another solution to enable NVIDIA GPU under hardware based Mac OS - by using Headless Ghost Emulator Fake Display (buy it from Amazon), so that the OS would recognize another external display and may render things under dedicated GPU. (although additional settings may still needed)

By the way, did you bought the GX501GI (GX501 2018 with 1080) or the GM501? Because I think only the GM501 is able to switch to Optimus / G-Sync...

I bought GX501GI. Now I am in UK so I send the amazon parcel to my friend, and I cannot access my new laptop for now. Could you tell me where did you get the info that GX501GI doesn't support Optimus? If you are sure about this, I think Hackintosh this laptop with dedicated GPU would be so easy.

I just read the Global ROG siteweb. In the description, they are saying you can last 5h+ on the GM501 by disabling G-Sync. But no word in the description of the GX501GI :s

There is a RJ45 Adaptor. You would have a mouse only if you bought the bundle.
Actually I haven't seen my laptop yet. I bought it on Amazon US while I am in UK, and was sent to my friend. I only saw it by the pictures my friend sent me.

Hi guys I would like to buy the GX501GI but I'm reading conflicting opinions between the GX and the GM version (with 1070).
If I understood correctly, the GM version has something called Nvidia Optimus that optimize the performances when you are not playing so the battery lasts really longer than the 1:30h of GX's battery.
My question is: does only the GM version has this feauture? Is it possible to optimize the battery on the GX?
    Thank you

Yes you understood correctly. I have comfirmed with Asus Support, they say only GM support Nvidia Optimus technology, for the GX model, you can only use G-Sync mode and the battery life is limited to 2hrs.

Actually GM501's battery doesn't last long as well,as from the LinusTechReview says, it can only last 2.5hrs under office job

Please check this video just posted today:

Thank you, after seeing this video I'll buy the GX without any doubt, 30 minutes of battery life don't change so much to prefer the GM instead in my opinion.
    What's your?

I bought the GX version. However suddenly I want to refund it and change to GM, because I feel I still need the Intel inregrates graphics to do the unRaid virtualization, so that I can distribute Intel graphics to host OS and Nvidia graphics to virtual machine. Also, a hexa core is perfect for unRaid since I can distribute 4 cores out of 6 to virtual machine. In addition, the seperated SSD and SSHD storage on GM model is also better for unRaid.

In any case, if you turn off your GPU and switch to the integrated the battery life will improve.

Is this possible with the GX? Does I have to do it from the bios?

I am not sure about the BIOS options for changing that. However, you can try changing your power options to be "balanced" or "power savings" if that is available.

Wouldn't Asus advertise this as they did with the GM501 version? If the GX501 had a switch like the GM501, wouldn't it be a huge selling point?

    Unable to switch optimus technology.

Able to enable g-sync within the nvidia control panel.
