first off I have the best buy g73jh so doesnt have a second caddy, I know people have "ghetto" rigged them but I just dont feel comfortable doing that. at
Worlds Greatest Site for Asus Spare Part you can i for around 37$ including shipping for the official caddy, and I was looking at getting this HDD

    Newegg.com - SAMSUNG SpinPoint MT2 HM100UI 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive

before I make the purchase (wanting to in the next day or so) I just want to get some ideas as far as the quality of the HD ( I want atleast a TB) and th caddy, I know this isthe official so shouldnt have any problems.

The hdd is 12.5 mm and will not fit

    dont buy it.

you need a 9.5 mm hdd

I have thought about it and actually using foam packaging or foam ear plugs is actually superior to using a screwed in caddy.

It actually absorbs some shock as opposed to sending it directly to the hd.

Todays more modern hdd caddies are no longer screwed in at all they are held in by little rubber grommets.

So no, 37 for a hdd caddy that has no or little use to go with a hdd that cant be used is not a good purchase. Im glad you asked

the largest 9.5 mm hd on the market is 750 gb

you can purchase a diy optical drive bay thing that replaces your dvd drive with a caddy that can accept 12.5 mm drives.

Its only about 12$ shipped on ebay search diy odd caddy in the hardware forum on this site.

Without anything holding the drive in place, it could vibrate loose from the connection socket, which is the only thing that would be holding the drive.

Honestly you're better off just doing a "ghetto" solution instead of wasting $40+ on a flimsy piece of metal Asus should have included. Hell you could probably make your own caddy if your good for less than 10 bucks.

ya you need something behind the bottom of the hdd and in back

    I used 3 foam peanuts

2 in back and one cut in half underneath

between that and the connection it will never move.

    foam ear plugs are better.

that drive is a 9.5 mm drive it will work. The seagate.

I ordered my momentus xt from newegg. They package it with 100s of foam peanuts. I just used three to get it running and i have never needed to change it since then.

750 gb is the largest 9.5 mm drive. There are also ones from wd and hitachi. That is the only 7200 rpm one.

I think a wd or an hitachi is more reliable than a seagate personally. I do like my xt though its a unique technology and its the fastest hd however it is only 500 gb.

Thanks stamar :) you really convinced me, I just hope mine comes with foam peanuts lol. If not I can always look for something else, I guess I am just worried it will come loose or get damaged/overheat without proper mounting.

And as far as that drive, well I a deff looking for size, I was hoping for a 1TB, but since 750 is the largest, Unless you or anyone else has ALOT of complaints of the seagate I wanna get that, my external is that and has been working perfectly for over a year, but I will easily sacrifice some speed for reliability.
also would you recommend another drive but same size? even if its slower? I do want reliability ALOT.

newegg has 10$ off that drive in their most recent newsletter

ya actually i would recomend the hitachi 750 5400 rpm drive over it because it has reached the market more recently.

Its quite possibly faster but there hasnt been a test.
