hello there recently i applied new thermal paste to my gtx260m in the asus g51 and i started to notice a rise in temperatures. Trying to figure out what happened i noticed when i screwed in the heat sink near the CPU i was pinching the fan wires.(as in I screwed the heat sink on top of the wires so they were being squeezed between that and a part of the case)
Not really too technical so i'm not sure if pinching the wires could have screwed up the fan but since i never paid attention to the fan before i'm wondering if i am having odd fan behavior.
My fan doesn't come on until windows is loading and it will first get the gpu to around 55 then go off and it will stay off until around 64 then stay at about 2047rpm until the gpu goes under 62 then it goes off again. I am wondering if when i pinched the wires i screwed the fan up or if that is normal and maybe my gpu is just running hotter due to the new thermal paste.
so if anyone has the same laptop if you could just let me know if your fan goes off at a certain temp or is constantly on. Thank you

Well, something is odd on your laptop, since I am typing you from my g51 and my fan is on always, but it is on low rpm since I barely hear it. I wouldnt say that you did something to wires since if one wire is cut in half fan wouldnt start at all or it would run on max rpms(thing this happens when you cut yellow wire, not sure, maybe someone can assist in this case). It has to be something else. I think your fan doesnt go off, it just go to low rpms and when it reaches certain temperature in youe case 62C it kicks in to lower it and just keep it in endless loop. It could be that you havent applied TIM properly or it is bad one so as soon as you fan slows down gpu starts to heat up, and after fan kicks in it lower gpu temp and after that it slows down..etc. My fan is now in low rpms when browsing. After i start game and gpu heats up fan kicks in high speed and stays there.

well thats what i thought but i actually turned my laptop on without the case and watched the fan and it does go completely off at around 62 and doesn't come back on until 67. it goes from off to 2047 rpms and then drops back down until its completely off
just trying to narrow down the problem if anyone with this laptop or i guess just general knowledge of the subject could tell me if
Laptop fan should start on startup(before windows)?
someone with this model could tell me what their normal fan rpms are for different temps.
and if in this model of laptop should the fan go off at any temp?
thank you for your input -
Yes, my fan actually start before windows. As soon as I press power button my fan kicks in. What do u use to measure fan rpms?
I dont thing that fan should go off at any temp? Maybe in lower rate laptops, but with models for gaming idts. Maybe someone could help us here.
Did you recheck those wires? Make sure power connector is all in, recheck everything. -
I use speed fan to measure the fan rpm, hopefully its just the fan that is bad (its only a $15 replacement) and not the connector on the mobo. The only thing I can think of that i did to it was when i screwed in the heat sink maybe i pulled a wire out from the fan itself as they are all in the connector.
The 4 pins in the mobo are tight and are how they should be so I guess it would have to be the fan, just seems like pretty strange behavior for the fan, when the fan goes i thought it would either work or not work not do this on/off type deal.
also thank you DraganUs for your input and helping me narrow this down -
So an update for the fan, i rechecked all the wires and they all seem pretty in there to me and i ordered a new fan.
However sitting in class today I started to notice that my fan wont come on at all unless the cpu is over a certain usage.
Such as leaving the computer alone just staring at my background the fan didnt come on at all it slowly crept from 53 to 82(gpu temp/ cpu temp stayed normal). But when I opened up chrome and started surfing the web the fan came on and after testing my theory it is so far confirmed that the fan wont come on unless the cpu is being used no matter how hot the gpu gets.
I am hoping this is still something wrong with the fan maybe one of the wires got frayed when it got caught between the heat sink and the case but I am wondering what else could be wrong? The pins in the motherboard or stiff and all in place so could my motherboard be messing up the fan somehow.
I appreciate any advice or solutions to this problem. thank you
