Hello all, I've recently purchased this pc and want drivers and programs for it that are compatible with w7. Im havin a hard time findin any new video card drivers for the nvidia 260m I believe ia what it is. It has dual core 2.2ghz processors from the previous owner with upgraded thermal paste mod done. I just noticed some lacking on left4dead with all high video settings.. and freezing too. So if there's a w8 optimization guide.. please point me there. Also what is there a program to turn off the lid leds? Thanks!

The LED's on the G51 were not controllable by the stock software.
The graphics card driver shouldnt be too hard to find.... Nvidia.com > USA > Download Drivers > GTX 260M, Windows 7 x64 > Download. -
Ill loom there but I would like a modded video card driver. Something that will increase performance. There isn't a lot of info on this pc other than vista stuff. That aycka about the leds.. im afraid to leave it on too long.. I don't want to burn the lights out.

The lights have a lifespan greater than that of the laptop, they can and might die prematurely but not much you can do for it. You can always grab a soldering iron and fix it in 5 minutes when it happens. But they should last 10,000+ hours normally. -
I wouldn't worry about burning out leds, they have a very long lifespan, you'll probably have stopped using the laptop altogether before the leds die of age.

Okay, that's great to know! So im assuming if I want to be able to of my gpu.. ill have to go back to vista? Any idea if there's any upgraded bios? Im looking to squeeze some performance out of it.. because right now it isn't doing so goos with the slowing down of left4dead on high. My old toshiba played it on high and didn't have a dedicated gpu.

I think Direct Console for the G51Vx was the last to support turning the lid lights off. I don't think it works for Win7 though. You may be able to hex edit the installer to get it to force the windows version string, I tried this on the G51J but it still failed after installation, I think because the BIOS and ACPI is totally different from the Vx.

Okay, well its no big deal.. Here is the graphics driver i have now.. any insight as to how this driver is, compared to a dox 185? "8.15.11.8640". Also I have a p8400 processor.. how is this processor compared to stock? I can only get up to 2.5 on overclocking before it crashes to a blue screen.. my 3dmark06 score was 9558.. I've seen some people with my pcs.. running in the 12,000 score.. Is there anything i can do to make this thing run better.. or should i just switch back to vista and go that route? Thanks

LOL The 12000 score is with a hefty overclock and good cooling. Since every laptop is different (and so the tolerance for overclocking is different), and you don't seem to be an advanced user, there isn't much I'd recommend.
There is no "super-easy-omg-massive-OVERCLOCK" program you can download. It's a lot of trial and error, and lots of temperature monitoring.
As for having a p8400 processor, the g51vx came with several different processors. Mine had a p8700, others have core2quads, and some came with t7700 IIRC. So your speed comparisons don't really mean much, unfortunately.
For the most part, the modern drivers will be better than drivers even 6 months old. And the performance difference stable driver releases is generally quite small (not always, but generally). So get the latest driver from nvidia, and you'll be fine.
Don't bother going back to vista, it doesn't offer any real advantages over 7.
For turning off the lid, there's a cord you can unplug - it's super easy to access. Check the "Read this before posting" thread under the g51 (or maybe g60) section. They're the same laptop, with different screen sizes. -
Alright, well im not really an advanced user anymore.. when i was younger i built a gaming computer from scratch.. obviously i just bought parts and assembled, i was good with windows xp.. but its been so long since ive even messed with a computer for more than playing diablo 2.. its crazy.
Im usually pretty good about just using google, to find my information.. but we all know this stuff is outdated the minute it comes out in retail stores.. but I was told from the previous owner(bought from ebay about 2 months ago.) that he upgraded to this processor, he did a thermal paste upgrade and added another 300 gig hdd to the system.
I have been playing around with oc'in and watching my system temps.. i can reach 2572.9mhz and run orthos for about 10 minutes and my temps are staying steady at around 110.. which actually seems high to me.. Im not for sure what paste he used.. Even though that seems high.. it doesnt seem to even be kicking my fan on. So im thinking about trying to undervolt my system while im at 2.5 and seeing what better temps i can grab. It also looks at idle im running at 116.. these appear to be stock temps.. so im not for sure if this guy just sold me a computer that is stock other than a new processor and a additional hdd or not. -
Alright, well i got some good news, I got the dox 185 drivers installed and up and running.. it upped my 3dmark06 to around 10,500 for an overall score. I really believe that my processor is whats holding me back from supreme domination.. lol. I'm going to look around for a.. t9100, is it? the 3.06ghz processor for our computers and also look for 4 gigs more ram. Does anyone know of a trusted source that will offer what ram we need? Im not even for sure what ram is in this computer.
Lastly, two more questions. I have nvidia tools installed and cannot find the "performance" tab, in the left hand side of the Nvidia control panel, that the optimization guide on this website says to find, when wanting to overclock the gpu. That will be my last step in trying for a better 3dmark score on this before i add a few things. So any ideas where this tab would be in windows 7? Lastly..lol, in HW monitor, it doesnt show my video card.. only shows my 2 hard drives, the motherboard(im assuming) and my processors. Anyways to fix this? -

T9900 is the 3.06 and the X9100 is the unlocked 3.06 which is hotter and consumes more power.
