after having my laptop a few months and it running exceptionally perfect i now have this problem where every time i play a game it runs for a little bit then it freezes and the screen goes black i have to hold down the power button to restart. Im not sure what the problem is here i have tried a clean install of windows, ive tried every nvidia driver even the one that came with the driver & utility disc and nothing has fixed it. Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution for it? or even know what is causing it. I dont overclock anything and the cpu/gpu never go over 85c im at a loss here and hope someone can help me out

It could be a hardware problem with the graphics card if you have clean installed and tried a bunch of different nvidia drivers.

Yes, you could try reseating the graphics card if you were comfortable with that, but I'm not sure it would fix the problem.

yea id rather just send it in than open it up myself at this point

There are some things you can try, like trying different settings in nvidia control panel, and making sure your refresh rate is set correctly.
Also make sure this is happening on different games, if it's just one or two games there might be a problem with the game itself.
Since you have done it from a clean install though it should have fixed it, unless the driver you used was not a stock one and it is causing the problem. -
well it happens in starcraft 2 and world of warcraft which are the only two games i own, The clean install seemed to of fixed in the first day then the next day it started doing it all over again and im not sure why

Maybe you can try some demos of some completely different games from a different publisher. I think there are some free games on steam you could try.
-
i had darksiders and it did it on it also but it didnt do it on need for speed shift 2 before i did the clean install

Hm, well it doesn't sound so straightforward now.
Maybe you should run memtest86+ to make sure you don't have any RAM problems.
Also look at your display settings and make sure you are on 60Hz refresh, it could be that simple. -
yea im on 60hz refresh

Another thing you can try is some 3d benchmarks or a stress test like furmark (don't need to do any extreme burn testing). Just to see if it is a problem with full screen 3D or if windowed 3D works OK.
-
which 3d benchmark should i try?
-
Try a GPU stress test like OCCT and see if you still get the black screen.

3dmark or any unigine benchmark, or anything else you can find. Just another 3D application since you don't have other games to test.
-
alright ill do that
-
unigine ran just fine w/o problems, going to run 3d mark11 now and see how that goes
and 3dmark11 ran fine also -
Try the CPU, RAM, and GPU test on OCCT. If they all run fine, the only thing that's left that I can think of is your hard drive.

That's good news.
Maybe your GPU isn't to blame if it can run other 3D apps fullscreen without issue.
Since you have problems with Blizzard games maybe it is something common to their graphics engine. Are you fully patched for WOW and SC2?
Someone else will have to chime in here, I'm not really a gamer anymore so I don't have great advice about this stuff these days. -
yea im fully patched for both games
-
also make sure you installed the latest DirectX and Win 7 SP1
-
You said this happens with Star Craft 2, do you have it patched to V 1.3.4 .. Because we basically have the same GPU and I'm not experiencing any freezing, I also have 275.33 driver installed. My SW is 2 months old.
Did you do the 3DMark11 test in Performance mode 1280x720p? Did you get P1900+ score stock with 275.33 driver in Mark11? You should also get 14,000 with 3DMark06 @ 1280x1024. Could you confirm if this is your scores, because like others this is what we get with a good working stock 460m 192-bit gpu with 275 driver. Edit : I noticed the 740M disreguard the scores
Maybe also try cleaning the exhaust vents for any dust clogging to help with temps.. Or open the bottom and do a light cleaning if any dust clogging or accumulation preventing proper cooling.
Lastly, when it freezes can you escape with contrl+alt+delete? -
nope, i have to hold down the power button and reboot. Yes sc2 is patched to 1.3.4 it didnt always freeze it just started happening as stated in the first post after 3 months with no significant changes to my pc, i just woke up one day and it started doing it. -
problem solved. It was Microsoft visual c ++ 2008 redist/windows update that was causing this problem to happen for me.

Wow. Thanks for posting the solution!

Search on the windows Event logger for Errors ^^ it can be Error ID 17
-
-
Might be a hard drive stutter.
-
Having a similar problem hoping this might fix it. -
i uninstalled it and problem solved
-
Uninstalled all 2008 C++ Updates and reinstalled up to service pack 1 hope it fixes my problem.
-
hello! I was reading this topic and I have the exactly same problem you had! I tried to unnistal the 2008 C++ but didnt work.... When I bought the computer it was pretty normal, then, started this video freezing. Its being two monthys that I am trying to solve this problem with no success, the problem just got worse. When this problem started, it happended randomic. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But its just getting worse, and now, happens all the time. I just went to add and remove prograns and removed the c++, is there anything else I can do? Another thing, if I open my notebook to see the cooller (I suspect there are temperature problems, its the only explanation I found), do I lose my global guarantee?
Thanks for the help! -
I tried the same things you did, I made a clean format, after that, I made a recovery format, I tried the drivers, etc. I was so happy when I read you founded out the solution but that didnt work to me hehe, I hope anyone can help
-
What programs and setup are you playing back these videos? Are you using the laptop screen, or HDMI out?
-
I am using laptop screen, I have already tried to use my television as monitor to check if it was a display problem, but it freezed too. It happens in all games I am playing, team fortress 2, portal 2, mafia 2, etc
-
You may have one of the several updates from Windows that have been causing lag, or you have a corrupted video driver install, or you could have a set of drivers causing high latency.
Sometimes it's just best to start over and reinstall Windows 7 fresh. -
I have already tried a clean installation of windows 7 and the problem wasnt solved, so, I think its another thing that is happening... Today I was playing, but just on the batery and the problem didnt happen. Anyway I have to test more if out of the power suplly the problem happens, could be anything related to that? Thanks for your help!
-
Ahh... you may have the issue where when it's on AC power and battery, it stutters. It should work ok when you are on either. Try taking the battery off, and use AC only.
If this is the case, to fix it you'll need a new motherboard, iirc. Check with Asus RMA. -
wow I guess you are right! I remoed my battery and there was no problem. Of course I have to test it more. Anyway, this problem can just be fix with a new motherboard? =/ thats sad haha, at least I can use without the batery
thanks! -
-
I´ve been testing my notebook removing the baterry to see if the freezes happens... and it happened... so, I didnt solve my problem yet hehe. 65 C GPU TEMPERATURE and 72 c cpu (all the 4) temperature, is that normal? Another question, about the c++, I unnistaled it on add and remove programs, is there the possbility that I have to delete it on another place?
And my last question, do I lose my guarantee if I open the notebook?
Thanks again for the help -
is that load or idle temps?
-
That temperature is running games
I am thinking about make a bios update... is that a good try? -
I prefer to keep my system current in regards to BIOS and such, so sure. Use a FAT32 formatted USB stick, throw the BIOS ROM file on it, and us EZ Flash in the BIOS (F2 at post)
-
I will try that... Hope it works because I dont know what else to do... I am brazilian and I bought my computer on amazon.com, and I am trying to see if the brazilian official store can help me with the warranty but they are saying that, even its a global warranty, I would have to contact the us asus because brazil is not part of the "global" warranty. That is bothering me a lot. I am trying to fix the problem but I really think its a temperature problem. When I run the computer on high performance, the game freezes faster. Lets see if the bios helps.
Thanks a lot for the help! -
That's BS... the rma people are subcontractors of Asus International. I'd suggest you contact Asus HQ in your area and have them set up your RMA. On the asusrog forum, you can PM Mason@Asus.
-
Let me see if I understood that, If I need to use my warranty I am going to need to send my notebook to us? I was hoping that brazilian official store could see the problem and talk with us store showing them the problem and fixing it if its possible... its going to be a big headache hehe thanks again!
