Try different DVDs and CDs. If the same error/inability to read, it's most likely a faulty drive and I'd contact Asus for a RMA to have them replace the optical drive.

I too am having this problem... However it is just saying that there is no drive. It used to play dvd's just fine when I first got it, but then it was intermittent. Now NOTHING. I contacted ASUS tech and they said it was likely the driver and sent me to the site to download it. THAT didn't work either. So now I have a $1700 laptop that has no optical drive. I have a feeling they won't just send me another drive...They asked if my problem was resolved and I told them no, so they sent me to the same site to download the same driver. I have a feeling they don't speak english over at ASUS tech.

Have you installed any virtual CD software to mount iso or any new application that is related to a new piece of hardware. Any new DVD player software?

I assume you don't have another DVD drive to test.

    Cheers,

I dumped my G73 Blu-ray drive as after i burned movie files onto dvd it would jump and stutter. Brought a blu-ray writer and all my burns were fine after that.

I had the same issue with the MATA BD-CMB UJ141AS drive. Here 2 solutions that may work.

1.Try IDE sata configuration in BIOS( if you got SSD, forget it).

2.Try rolling back driver on your ATAPI controller:
    -right click my computer icon/properties/hardware,
    -expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers,
-right click Intel (R) PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 4 Port,
    -properties/drivers,
    -click on roll-back driver" button,

Since i got my SSD, i cant make my blu-ray drive work with the AHCI sata configuration. I already contacted Asus about that and its common issue with the G73JH blu-ray combo, they dont send new drive, you need to RMA... Im to scare to send my laptop RMA, anyways my guarantee is probably voided. I just ordered a sata-usb cable, ill try to use it as external drive... Im 100% sure the issue is compatibility between the drive and the chipset.
