hi together,
i hope this is the correct forum for posting this question.
i want to buy a g73sw that comes with 4gb ram (2 x 2gb are preinstalled on slot no. 2 and 3).
to have more headroom for 3d-, cad- and graphics-applications, i would like to upgrade it with two further 4gb-modules, to have 12gb in total.
but at the moment i'm not sure, if it would be the best solution just to buy these two modules and place them in the free slots, or if it would be a better solution to take the 2gb-module from no.3 , place it in no.1 and place the 4gb-modules in slot 3 and 4.
at the moment i'm not sure if it is the best solution to have identical 2gb-rams on slot 1+2 and identical 4gb-rams on 3+4, for example, or if i can also go with
4gb in slot 1, 2gb in slot 2, 2gb in slot 3 and 4gb in slot 4.
or would it be an advantage to place the 4gb-modules in no. 1+2 and the 2gb-ones in no. 3+4?
and what do you think, if i would take 3 identical 4gb-modules and replace the 2gb-ones with them instead (to have only three 4gb-rams in the machine)?
can anyone help me with details, please? what would i have to be aware of and which configuration would be the best idea for stability and performace?
thank you in advance

keep slots 1+2 with the 2G sticks, and 3+4 with the 4G sticks so that they'll operate in dual-channel mode for best performance.
-
thank you for your answer.
so you also expect that the dual-channel-operation works best / is constructed for ram-pairs on 1+2 and 3+4?
that would mean that i will have to send the machine to asus to keep me from losing warranty.
really sad, that they didn't build slot 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 on the backside of the motherboard (instead of 2 and 3) and equipped them with the included ram-modules...
the new g74sx offers accessability to all four modules... at least they seem to have learned -
Also 7 7 11, it might interest you to know that someone here recently posted a thread about softmodding the ATi 5870m into a firepro card (I believe that's what they're called). If you're using it for mainly graphics applications then you should consider doing this as it comes with a big performance increase with most of them. Hopefully you're getting a 5870m G73, too -
@jakeythesnake:
thank you for the information! are you sure, that slots 1+3 and 2+4 are for the ram-pairs?
also thank you for the info about the 5870m. unfortunately i can get it only with a nvidia-card here. at least cuda-support now might be given which is a nice feature, i think.
but according to my experience, the standard-graphics-cards should work as fine as the firepro and quadro ones. imho, mostly the performance-plus is hardly noticeable although there are special certifications.
i will post my experience with the g73sw and its graphics here, when i will have done some tests with it. -
Pretty sure it's 1/3 and 2/4.
But I doubt you'll see much of a difference between dual and non-dual channel. It's funny that you're concerned about that, but don't understand the performance boost of a soft-mod to a firepro. Oh well. -
@DCx:
thank you for your answer!
you are surely right, that there might be performance-boosts with some applications. but usually ati certified their drivers only for special applications from special software-manufacturers (very often autocad...). in the software i used so far, i didn't perceive real boosts. i have a firegl v5600 in my system and can say, that other cards with similar-benchmark-results perform as well. with the quadros in my university i can say the same. when you have too many polygones in a 3d-app, it will have slow frame-rates as well as an ordinary card...
by the way on my systems sometimes there are driver-issues with the special-firegl-drivers. some applications like audio-editing-software will result in heavy graphic-errors so that the hardware-acceleration in the win-driver must be decreased. furthermore, a soft-mod might not assure the demanded stability as well, that i also want to assure with the best ram-config possible.
main focus is on stability and ram-performance, the graphics will be ok anyway. -
so, in the machine, that arrived now, slot #2 and #4 were equipped with 2gb ram each... so one slot on the backside of the motherboard is free and can't be reached without disassembly... they are running as dual channel at the moment.
this is strange, because according to the manuel both on the backside should be the equipped ones.
but it'll be sent to asus for ram-upgrade anyway. -
I actually called ASUS on this and they said that it they configure that laptop sometimes the way you see it. Over the weekend I experimented with the laptop.
I added 4 Gigs to the slot under the MB and the G73 recognized it immediately. I didnt not have any issues with stability. The next day I upgraded an additional 4 gigs under the keyboard for a total of 16 gigs of RAM. The laptop runs perfect with no issues. I can render video and play games online.
Will ASUS upgrade the RAM for you? I called them a few weeks back and the tech told me that they would not take the laptop back for a RAM Upgrade. Upgrading the RAM was pretty easy. Netboookreview has links to Youtube that show you how to do it. It was actually pretty easy. -
that sounds good, thank you!
did you also try to combine 2 /4 gb rams on the board?
and which 4gb-modules did you use?
in view of the ram-upgrade i hope so. last week the phone-support told me, that they can do that and that i would only have to pay for the new ram modules. they also told me, that if i installed all modules on my own, warranty would be lost.
they told me to write an email to the tech-support on this (costs, ram-config etc.), but since one week, i didn't receive any answer from them. so the g73sw is still waiting for its upgrade. -
I used GSkill RAM from NewEgg. It was priced at about $60. I installed two 4 Gig modules. I can render CS 4 Premiere Pro videos and I still have more then enough RAM to do other things. If ASUS will install the RAM for you that would be awesome.
