Hi I am planning to a G74sx this week. I am torn between two models. the A1 and the TH71.

The only major differences I can see are the following:
    -TH71
    --2670QM
    --500gb HD
    --16gb RAM

    -A1
    --2630QM
    --1.5TB HD's
    --12gb RAM
Everything else is the same from what I can determine. Does anyone know if they updated the motherboard or chipset in the TH71 version?

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

Well I'd go for the first one, because it has more ram and more important it has a better CPU, which is a clear step up from the 2630qm.

It has only 1 Hdd but you can add your own anythime.
I'll take better CPU more ram over disk space anytime man, there's no really a point to compare them.

TH71, better power than bigger space. It's harder to upgrade components than HDD.
You might add an SSD for your OS, much better than swapping an SSD from existing HDD.

Thanks for your input. However due to availability I will be getting the A1 now. Hopefully it's not a huge difference in power. A friend of mine was saying that in the future I could always buy a 2720qm cheap on ebay and swap it out without too much hassle.... we'll see. For now I am just going to enjoy it the way it is after a clean install and driver updates. Picking it up tomorrow. Very excited!

    Cheers!

Be very careful when buying engineering samples from ebay. Sometimes they are missing major features like turbo boost.

Good to know. I will keep that in mind if I ever decide to upgrade the proc.

For now the biggest thing I plan to do is upgrade the primary drive to an SSD.

Anyone know the brand of memory the comes with the Asus G series? Generic?

When I run 3d mark it says some Samsung 1333 . 12gb ram is already overkill, you dont need 16 unless you are doing some HARDCORE video editing/max/photoshop stuff.

Mine only has 8 gigs and photoshop/max run great. Dont do any video editing though.
