I did a search and did not find out. Is this possible? I just got a new router thinking this was a state of the art laptop. I know its at least a year old so maybe im barking up the wrong tree.

No, the stock wifi card in the G73 does not have 5Ghz dual band support.
However, the good news is that a different miniPCI wifi card such as the Intel 6300can be used. This upgrade should be very cheap and easy to install.

Edit: sorry I double posted the first part of this message.

I personally don't see the need for it so I haven't done it myself. I was thinking about doing it awhile ago when I bought a dual band router but the problem is the range for 5Ghz is much lower.

Edit: The Intel 6300 is, from what I've heard, a much nicer card than our stock one so it's still a worthwhile upgrade because it only costs around $40.

The intel 6300 can use 3 antennas while the 6200 is limited to two. The G73 has 2 antennas so unless you are planning on adding another antenna, the 6300 and 6200 will be functionally the same. I am using a 6200 which connects reliably at 300 Mbps on the 5G band. I would recommend buying the card from a good source such as Newegg or Provantage. Avoid Ebay as a source for the card!

only thing that is confusing is that the 6300 has 3 locations for antennas. What ones do you use?

Thanks for your reply. I just ordered a 6200, I did not see your post as I was copying and pasting an IMG link ;)

Yeah default card(atheros 9285) was crashing on me when transferring files over the network, even with 4 different drivers, crashed all the same way. Only crashed if the files was over 3gb.

Either way, i bought the 6200 from amazon and its been crash free, works great on 5ghz band and even on the 2.4ghz bumped me from 150mbps to 300mbps.

It was definitely worth the money, and it's really easy to replace. Just pop off the white and black cords(its a bit hard, but its like a mini coaxial connector, so it just pops off.) Then unscrew the 2 screws, slide it out, and put in the 6200. It's that easy :>.

Here's an older thread about the difference between the 6300 and 6200.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...90963-upgrade-g73-3-antenna-wireless-lan.html

Yeah, unless you plan on buying an additional antenna and routing it through the laptop the 6200 is a good choice over the 6300 because you'll save a few bucks. Note that the 6300 can be used with two antennae with no problem.

EDIT: The 6300 is a indeed a half height card just like the 6200. The only difference is the 6300 can make use of a third antenna.

I got the 6200 installed. I looks like my 5ghz signal is weak? or is the negative numbers better?

edit: the top chart is the 5ghz band.

Bigger numbers are better. Ignore the negative sign.

    ROFL @ DCx

@lotust 5GHz has less range since it's a smaller wave (or whatever, I'm not a wireless guru), so I guess you need to move closer to your AP.

thanks guys. I don't know much about networking. I just get by. So it looks like im getting 65db on the 5GHz band and 45db on the 2.4GHz. Is this good average or bad?? My trasfer rates dropped a bit when transferring files to my media server. I was getting 3.5mb per second. Now with the new adapter im getting 2.5mb/s :(

higher frequency = shorter wavelength, lower frequency = longer wavelength. 5GHz is more "penetrating" but doesn't go as far as 2.4GHz. They travel faster though, so its all good.

thanks for explaining that man. I am seeing an upload speed of 5mb/s now. I guess that's a good as it gets.

5GHz also has the advantage that it's less used and has less chances of running into interference from lets say that stupid 2.4GHz phone.
