charger/charger port problems

I got my girlfriend an Asus Republic of Gamers a few months ago and its been serving her well and she just got me one(G73S) and its got 3d and its great and all but the charger port is very touchy, I have to wiggle the cable for the laptop to recognize it and if I move around at all it loses signal and says I'm unplugged even when the wire is in there.

If its in 'too far' it doesn't register, if its out too far it also(obviously) doesn't register.

this makes it really difficult to sit with in bed or in a chair on a laptop tray, any movement can disconnect me, and when in a game I can't tell and it has caused my system to shut down mid gaming a lot.

I think the problem is with the charger port, not the charger. I don't want to send my laptop away to get it looked at, does anyone have any suggestions or tips for dealing with a finicky charger port?

Are there better chargers out there that might stay in better, or anything I can do to the laptop?

I would first get a good replacement charger. I recommend the Targus APA05US since the refurbed ones are $42 shipped. They run cooler than the 150w stock, and have an L-shaped tips for added convenience. Also, if you get into overclocking, they offer higher headroom for supplying voltage.

And it's a great idea to have a backup unit.

This way, if the new charger works better, then you know it's the charger tip, and can have Asus RMA replace it. If you have the same issue with the new one, then it's the motherboard power port, and needs replacement. You can then have a local ASP service it, or do the Asus 360 service for overnight shipping to RMA center.

I've tried using the power adapter from my gf's RoG and it does the same things in mine, and mine works fine with hers.

So I think that narrows it down to the charger port. Whats the best way to get that fixed? I really don't want to send it away.

I can buy the part and maybe take it to a local shop, or can I replace it myself? I've built my own desktops before and replaced ram in laptops, but have never really opened one up.

Does changing the charger port require any soldering or it is just something that plugs/snaps in?

 

I don't know the answer to your question, but you should check out this Youtube video on a G73JH teardown ( YouTube - ‪BTOtech.com | G73Jh & G73Jw & G73Sw Disassembly Take Apart G73 g73jw service manual‬‏) to figure out for yourself how hard it might be to just get to the power supply port. I know you have a G73S but they are mostly the same design. It looks to me you have to remove at least the keyboard, the top panel and maybe even the motherboard to get to it.

 

You would need to do some soldering to replace the port. Call the RMA service and setup an Asus 360 service (you need to mention the Asus 360) and they'll setup an overnight ship to and from the repair facility. Usually takes a week total if they're in stock and on schedule.

 

Thanks, yeah I guess I'm going to have to send it in, what a PITA, less than 2 weeks old and I am sending my macbook air in because the screen got broken when it got stepped on.

I have a lot of games on here, some that only allow 1 install of the game on 1 PC, do I need to uninstall in case they do anything to my hard drive? Cause I will have to do a long process of reclaiming my game if I lose it.

If you're concerned, take the hard drive out. I had to RMA my G73 a while back, and they wanted to blame a software issue before the TIM, so I didn't give them the opportunity. They fixed what needed to be fixed.
