i was just wondering what are the default values of the Seagate ST9500420AS model

with the latest firmware(0005SDM1) i have these readings (with HDDScan)
AAM (Automatic acoustic management = 208
APM (Advanced power management) = 128

anyone made some benchmarks? or give me more info
    thanks

p.s i would also like to know if i make changes with HDDScan are they permanent or they are gone after the restart?

They last till you restart, to change it permanently, you have to use Hitachi Feature Tools. The AAM and APM defaults should be correct.

The AAM value controls how fast (or slow) the head should be moved over the drive disks
i believe that the AAM on the old firmware 2sdm1 or 3sdm1 was set to maximum = 254
on the new firmware the AAM on default it is set to 208
which means less noise but less performance (but that is probably significent)

personally after installing the firmware i've noticed my HDD more loudable (significant but noticable)
i am trying to figure what made this
probably i have the AAM feature disabled ...

The APM feature value controls after which time the head should be parked
lower APM value the more it will park down
i don't know what were the default values with the older firmware (that's why i asked what are the default readings)

in one word the new firmware will make your HDD last longer than the older
