I would love to downgrade the videocard in the g51j. I have done all the usual things to bring the temps down, I still get a thermal shutdowns. I have cleaned the fins. pasted and repasted with artic silver, drilled holes in the fake speaker I have finially bought a laptop cooler just to keep it from shutting down. Quite frankly I dont game anymore , I mostly do virtualizations. Some of the i5 cheapy laptops have pretty good specs but all are lacking esata and hdmi.

I'm not sure why you're getting thermal shutdowns on a G51J with a clean fan and proper paste job. The 260M does run hot, but I've run that system to its limit and getting a thermal shutdown is pretty rare unless you're unthrottled and maxing out both the CPU and GPU.

I would suspect your heatsink may be either bent, the heatpipe broken, or something else is critically wrong with your cooling system.

If you are intent on downgrading the card, the GT240M from the M60J might be an alternative. But I haven't found a pic of that card to know if the layout is the same or if it is soldered into the board, even.

edited the thread title from g50j to g51j

Have you tried underclocking using a overclocking program? Maybe you can lower the voltage as well... if your gpu supports different voltages.

thanks for your responses. I did try some programs to change gpu settings but I t didnt appear to do jack all.HOneslty dont remember how many I tried but I do have nvprofile still installed. I would like to try to underclock or undervolt the cpu I know the i7 likes to run a little hot on its own.

Your heat pipe has lost its low boiling point liquid, for sure. Especially if you have the fan working fine and everything re-pasted.

the heatpipe has liquid in it? btw I got a laptop cooler , still now luck I know the thing is on borrowed time. I rarely use it now, maybe 2 hours a day, I do keep it on all the time, then it does thermal shut downs.

The heatpipe has a small amount of water in it which turns into vapor.

Yes, especially if the heatpipe has been bent.

I wonder where I can get a new one just to test it out. I notice that the g51jx is a slight different design, I wonder if I can use it, if there would be improvements.
[IMG] I think I have stopped the thermal shutdowns for now, everyonce in awhile it will get to 99c which is wierd it usually isnt doing a damn thing when that happens. I think I am averaging 75-85c I used a program to downclock the procs and keep them around 1.6ghz.

well sitting here browsing the web at 76c, throttled down to 1.6ghz on a cooling pad.. I have ordered a new cpu heatpipe + fan and agpu heat pipe, some spreaders and scrapers(paste) going to try this again. btw this cpu fan is slightly different, it has an extra section that goes over the gpu. I will post the differences when the parts come in.

Just flash a new vBios with lowered voltages, so you don't have to worry about software messing things up :)

I got my new fans and heat sinks. I like the design of it but unfortunately it was kinda different and it won't work in this model here is the previous paste job
    [IMG]
here is the differences in the fans the one on the right is the new one. the one on the left still has the gpu heatsink attatched, you see the new one has a plate attached to the fan casing, I think it would help with cooling.
so I was little let down I couldnt use it. I took apart the fan assembly thinking I could at least replace the fans and then I seen the root of all the problems. [IMG]
here are my temps before cleaning this is on a laptop cooler too
    [IMG]
here it is after [IMG] my gpu didnt change much but my cpu temps are great, this is without the cooler. I have alot of scratches on the contact surfaces getting the orginal paste off, I might sand it down and see if that helps. you cant see that dust if you dont take the houseing apart , from the front of it you cant see it. so if you got high temps take your housing apart, too bad you have to repaste and all that.

it has bit the dust now...blackscreen at boot up. the thing is after I cleaned it the temps rarely rose about 80, mostly it was at 68-75. I wonder if it could be that I put a shim between the gpu and heatsink and the sensor doesnt read correctly, I added the shim because the heatsink didnt make full contact.
