Hello, I recently put in a new hardrive for my g51vx and installed windows 7 and since then my graphics card has been running hotter then usual. It is getting to 72 just surfing the internet. I know this gpu always ran hot and i actually havent used this computer for gaming for awhile so i'm not sure if 72 surfing the web was normal for this machine or is it high due to the switch to win7. I upgraded to a new driver and still having the same problem. Any suggestions?

The Aero theme in Win7 made my GPU clock up all the damned time. Fixed it by going to a simple theme that looks almost like Vista.

That shouldn't do that. I've had Aero on Win7 work on Intel 965, ATi x300, and NVidia 9800m GS.

Oh, it worked perfectly fine, but my GPU would randomly clock up to full 3D clocks for a moment or two, and then go back down again. I'll see if my current drivers, 197.45, make any difference.

But Redman's story is exactly like mine. I had no problems wit Vista Aero, but as soon as I jumped to Win7 Aero--I was using the same GPU drivers--my idle GPU temperatures fluctuated a lot more.

EDIT: Switched back to regular Win7 Aero for a bit, and my card is still jumping around in clocks.

Have you tried the latest Nvidia 257.21 drivers?

I have updated to the new drivers and still have the same problem. The temps will jump around but mostly it stays between 70-75 just turning it on and surfing the web. Anyone have any suggestions besides drivers that might help me out?

What driver version are you using from nvidia? I have to use specific drivers with my G51vx-rx05 otherwise my 260m will not properly clock itself for what I'm doing on the computer. And thus I'll get the same high temps that you are reporting just idling or messing around on the net.

Right now I am using 197.45 nvidia drivers and they work great, I get good fps, and it runs pretty cool. Usually my GPU idles around 50-55 just surfing the web and what not. If I watch a video it may jump up to around 60ish.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...ebook-drivers-released-ms-update-catalog.html <<< Go there and follow the instructions for where to download, and how to install. I bet they may fix your problem. I haven't bothered to try the new drivers out by nvidia, so I can't say for sure if a newer version will also work.

Another thing to look into is dust, maybe you just need to take the back panel off the laptop and get a compress air can and blow the dust out. Since you haven't gamed in awhile, the dust build up may have gone unnoticed for a long time. Now it is finally affecting you GPU heat even at lower clocks.

Finally, if none of the above work, I'd take the GPU heatsink off and re-paste with new thermal grease. Have you re-pasted the GPU before? Maybe you did a bad paste job.
