does anyone else with a G73 have any spots where the rubberized coating on the lid is rubbing off or peeling off?

i just noticed mine is this morning... i know it doesn't affect its usefulness but i have OCD about electronics as im sure a lot here do

yeah, its only a matter of time before it happens. it's a love hate relationship. I think on my UL50 I will buy an external keyboard before i wear out the wrist pads. Everything I ever owned like that does it eventually. It happens faster if you get a nick in it, it spreads from there. As long as the integrity of the coating is solid, it wont happen for a while

also, neat car. convert it to the direct injected heads and aluminum block though :p i bet you'd pick up 150 -200 hp and save some weight on the front...

mustangs are my mortal enemy on the street however, but right now, you got me... although i plan to make 800 whp on turbo :p

yeah i wish the lid was just matte instead of coated... the palm rest is fine its just the lid...

    what do you drive?

mine is direct injected and it has an aluminum block btw... im not horribly worried about saving weight cause its my daily driver... its just fun on the streets... haha

This is one of the reasons I returned my G73. I'm super OCD about electronics and stuff like that.

The specs in the laptop are fantastic, but the screen quality and rubber were a huge turnoff for me personally. Sorry to hear yours is messing up. :(

lol... nope, not confused in the slightest... i thought you were thinking mine was throttle body injected like some older engines... definitely not direct cylinder injected here haha...

The coating on the laptop is still in top shape but the one on my mouse is starting to peel off. The silver coating of the RoG logo is the worst part which is sad cause I really like this mouse. I know some people have called it cheap but the original Ideazon version still sells for 62$ CAD on newegg.ca and I really like the button placement.

the main reaso I like the G7/53 body over my Dell i5 1645 was because finger prints/smudges could be wiped and/or cleaned much easier. The Dell has a super glossy black lid that takes me wearing gloves to keep clean. hahahah

No wear & tear on my unit and I take it in and out of my bag daily. I take care of my stuff so it tends to last longer than it would for the average person.

Keep in mind I had the G73 since day 1 so its the oldest g73 around :D

You never said what car you have, although not too many cars can get 800whp on turbo. You said Mustang is your enemy, so...do you have a Supra?

On topic, would it be worth looking for rubber coat protection stuff like there is leather protection stuff? What about a rubber cleaner that would be safe on the G73? Sorry to hear yours is peeling. If you're up to it, take a pic for us? Or not, whatever you want.

I wonder if something like one of these two products would be healthy for the rubber on our laptops.
Pinnacle Vinyl & Rubber Protectant beautifies and protects your car's dash, vinyl seats and door facings against premature aging.
Wolfgang Vinyl & Rubber Protectant penetrates beyond the surface to maintain pliability and integrity of vinyl and rubber surfaces!

I used to play Table Tennis with an expensive paddle I built myself. The rubber has to be cleaned regularly to keep the surface dust and oil free so the ball grips when you hit it. I still have some of that cleaner sitting around somewhere, I could try that. It's a foam cleaner, and a little bit goes a long way.

I think I'll experiment with that and get back to you on here. If it starts eating away at my laptop I'll tell you it might be a bad idea. If it works I'll link to some of the products worth using.

My Table Tennis racket cleaner did work. Now my laptop is returned to its former non-shiny luster. While I was looking for similar products, I came across this sales pitch: "If you don't keep your rubber clean, you might as well play with anti-spin rubber."

So there you have it. All this time you guys have been playing with anti-spin rubber. What do you expect?

Here's one site for buying foam cleaner and sponge applicators.
    ButterflyOnline - Butterfly Table Tennis

I like the stuff on this site better though: BUTTERFLY - RUSHAWA FOAM CLEANER 165 ml Don't forget to buy a sponge.

Oh, and if you were expecting to be able to read the ingredients or any other information on the can, it's all in Japanese.

I just use rubbing alchohol, i use it to clean anything computer related other than screens and it has not had any negative effects for me on the G73. Since you can get a bottle for under $1.00 its probably the cheapest thing around other than water (heck you cant buy a bottle of water for $1.00 these days)

I moved out of the U.S. and was surprised to see a 2 liter bottle of purified water being sold in my country for the USD$ equivalent of 58 cents. That's not even a sale price!

I don't understand this at all. The rubber quality is actually really good. I use mine every day between 5-8hrs. You have to clean and take care of it. This applies to "everything" because everything in the world gets worn out but you can prolong it by taking care of it.

    *EDIT

I forgot to mention that you should clean the laptop using a microfiber towel. The rubber is so durable it will destroy paper towels. You can test this by rubbing your finger on the palm rest area. You will see dead skin as a result of the "durable" coating. I use a non-oily rubber cleaner that I found at a car parts store. A glass cleaner should work well to.

I think people with dry skin don't wear down their keyboard and laptop coating as fast compared to people with oily skin. It's just a theory, but I see lots of people on here saying they have faded keys on their keyboard. I've never had a keyboard's keys fade from my personal use. My hands are really dry though. The skin cracks and bleeds in the winter.

Only time will tell if the rubber coating will stand the test of durability too. I'll keep cleaning it often in case the scarce oil from my skin might wear it out.
