I was playing GTA4 and the system shut off.
I thought it was because my card was overclocked, but i couldnt turn it back on for a few minutes. I tried taking the battery out and putting it back in but i saw a spark inside the bottom vent as i did this.
Shortly enough the system powered back on but now the AC adapter doesnt work, and doesnt even light up. Im connected through a surge protector, so im wondering..is this a common thing? Is it covered under warranty?
Now i need to arrange for a new one while i still have 1hr 30 left on battery!!
-
Im also wondering as to why the system didnt automatically swtich to battery power once this happened. Is it because i was in the middle of a game and just decided to switch off instead?
-
Interesting turn of events...the AC adapter is back to life... It was dead for 10 min and i tried various nearby power points both with and without surge protectors.
So what exactly happened and is it a sign of imminent failure? -
Out of everything you mentioned it sounded more like a thermal shutdown.
How long were you playing?
Taking the battery out and removing the power adapter usually is what most of all us recommend doing when the laptop won't power on right away to begin with.
Just monitor those temperatures and see what's up with them.
Sometimes things just happen and it might have just decided to say "ah hell, I feel like turning off" lol -
I was playing perhaps 2 minutes. Keep in mind, ive never had a similar issue like this before - never had a GSOD either. It definitely isnt a thermal issue. I had my GPU and CPU repasted. My GPU never goes about 80C even in furmark. It idles at around 55C.
Since my last post, the AC adapter light has switched off again and it appears DEAD yet again!
EDIT: Yep, the AC adapter seems very temperamental right now. It works for a period of time before it shuts off for a period. The green light should never go off while its plugged in. -
Based on what you mention, I think your power brick isn't properly grounded, and you managed to short it. Time to get a replacement brick.
As a practice, I don't use surge suppressors, as they do not condition the supplied electricity. I plug into UPS's. -
I had my AC adapter die on my recently out of the blue. I would just buy a new AC adapter or get it replace if its under warranty. The replacement one I got is not the original that came with my g73 but works just the same
-
It seems to be working ok at the moment. Ive made enquiries as to whether i can get a new one through warranty so im waiting to hear back from them.
I was a bit worried about the spark i saw when taking out the battery while it was shutdown (and wouldnt turn back on). I know i should of taken the power cord out at the time but i didnt think it would cause a spark.
g73 power adapter is DEAD.
