So recently my asus g73 has been freezing up at random times. what could cause this? sometimes its 10 min after start up or even less. Could it be a driver thats bad?
-
Could be any number of reasons. Trying running a HDD test with HDTune.
Then if thats ok, run Memtest. -
i did both and they were good.
This started up like 1 week ago -
Hmmm.. drivers can cause problems but so too can the type and config setting of an Anti-Virus program.
What brand of AV do you have now on your laptop? -
i have norton 360
-
Try turning off Web Storage and ASUSUpdate
-
how would i turn them off?
-
Turn off Window's Update if you don't need them.
-
Is that what causing this. Like I said it just recently started happening.
-
Right click their icon and choose "Exit"
Web Storage can be uninstalled if you are not using it. -
ok did that, lets hope and see. So i did a virus scan and everything came out clean, checked my memory... clean, ran HD TUNE.. clean. could it be a driver? Last time my computer ran fine was before i installed hamachi and dead island so im not sure if that could be causing it. Would looking up in my event logger help?

Locked up again

You can also uninstall your C++ runtimes and NET runtimes, and let Windows reinstall them, or manually grab them and install. I had a crashing issue once from bad runtime updates from WU.

I've had random freezes since I purchased my G73h earlier this year (I think in July), but I haven't been able to find a solution.
First, would you mind clarifying what exactly happens when your computer freezes? Do you get a blue screen, gray screen, or does your computer screen freeze, showing literally the same image? Does your computer reboot automatically after the freeze?
My monitor simply stays still and doesn't show any activity. I try to perform actions, but there is no movement on screen. Even hard drive activity stops (according to the HD activity light). CTRL+ALT+DEL has no affect. I am forced to hold the power button until it shuts down. If I don't shut it down manually, it will simply stay frozen.
Like your machine, my freezes happen randomly, but fairly infrequently (2-4 times a week w/ about 20 hours of PC use per week).
I've done the following (these are just the things that come to mind):
=a fresh install of Windows at least twice (freezing DID occur on the stock installation of Windows as well)
=installed the latest video driver from ATI
=tried using default ATI driver from ASUS
=performed MEmtest+ 4.20 (0 errors after 1 complete pass)
=ran HDTune fast health test (0 errors)
=Anti-malware scanner Malwarebytes reports 0 infections
I'm fairly certain the problem isn't the software I have on my machine, as everything I use on my G73 I have on my desktop, which has never given me issues.
I'm running out of ideas of what the problem may be. I'm going to try disabling my mousepad for the next few days, as that's what I was using when it last froze, and I don't normally use my mousepad (plus, the mousepad has been unreliable with its sporadic jumping across screen). If that doesn't work, I'm going to try recovering the ASUS image from the hard drive one last time.
Some other strange behavior I've experience recently:
=Something in Asus' Power4Gear software caused my laptop to have a constant 13% CPU usage, making the fans run almost constantly (fresh install of windows didn't help. Power4Gear was definitely the problem).
=After about 15mins of running in the background, PCWizard (a hardware monitoring tool), will crash.
=Speccy another hardware monitoring tool used to crash and freeze my computer every time I loaded it up (hasn't today strangely)
Maybe I just got a lemon. I'm going to see if I can still get a refund... -
no, they screwd us all asus g73jh owners...
drivers that we can only use is the outdated one on their website. they even have a support kb doc about reverting ur vc driver to the one posted on their site if u experience problems updating driver from ati, which is insanely s2pid! we cant update our drivers AT ALL!! the ati radeon mobility driver pack from the amd website doesnt recognize our vc because asus may have tampered with it b4 they put it in on the damnd things. both amd and asus have washed their hands off this case because maybe im just one person complaining, theyr waiting for a mob before theyll think about fixing their mess. i cant even play Rage now because it also requires a much needed update for our vc. oh we are screwd... -
You should post your full system specs. I installed a Crucial M4 SSD that caused freezes until I upgraded the firmware. Check the sticky at the top of this forum for threads pertaining to other freeze issues.

I had lockups on my G73JH due to screwy memory modules... The system could be up for a day before a lockup, or it could be just a few hours. The issue would then re-occur in minutes after a restart. I had heard about some memory modules having loose connections where vibration would resolve the issue temporarily, and that was my issue.
I took my ram modules out, tapped both faces (where the memory chips are) on the table. I wasn't overly gentle, and reseated the modules. I haven't had a lockup since and this is over a period of 2-3 weeks now.
I had reseated my RAM before, so I don't think it was a RAM seating issue, but my lockups were specifically caused by screwy RAM.
As far as complaining about the drivers not being able to be updated, that's just not true. I am running completely updated driver versions for everything, and I only had to do a vBIOS update to be able to run the latest generation ATI display drivers. If you are too lazy, scared, to do the vBIOS update for yourself then take it to someone who can. Saying that these systems cannot run perfect is just inaccurate.
Every issue I ever had has been resolved.
Screwy Touchpad? - Yep, disassemble the laptop and remove the tape and silver film from the underside of the touchpad. Resolved
GSODs and lack of overclockability for Radeon 5870? - Yep, format a USB stick and copy the vBIOS flash utility, .rom file, and .bat script to the drive. Boot the USB stick and flash. Resolved
Random BSODs and lockups? - Yep, turned out to be bad/screwy RAM. Either spend the $50-$100 to upgrade replace the memory, or try reseating it or anything else that might help. Resolved
I'm running the latest Intel chipset drivers, Intel mass storage SATA controller drivers, Intel Proset wireless driver, Intel WIMAX driver, Atheros LAN driver, VERY up to date Realtek drivers, COMPLETELY up to date Creative software, Pre-RELEASE ATI RADEON drivers, most recent Synaptics generic driver.
I just had to respond because I dislike when misinformation is spread about this laptop model. None of the "issues" that you might have with the laptop short of hardware problems are not fixable. -
Nessly: I cannot PM you here, but if you want, create an acct on asusrog.com's forums, and PM me at Chastity@Asus. I'd like to discuss some options, plus include a copy of your post here.

Nessly, I had the same issue with my G73JH which I fixed by reinstalling the full chipset drivers from Chastity's page on asusrog. G73/74/53 Series Driver and Application Reference
Intel Chipset- http://pcaudio.ath.cx/stuff/infinst_auto.exe -
use -overall switch with that for best results if you download from Intel's site
-
-
I include that info since I cannot verify where people get their downloads from.
-
Perfect, that's what I thought. Thanks
