    Hi,

okay, first of all I did search the forum with this specific question but all the threads were dated 2010. I wanted to know if something has been upgraded in these system.
I am really confused. which one should I go for? What are the pros & cons for each of them? Should I wait a little more, if any upgrade is around the corner that is,?

    thanks

That's odd, because there have been a few questions raised in those threads since2010. I think they were probably just started in 2010.

I wouldn't get either. I'd say in march, shipments on the new 2nd generation i7's will began. The best laptop out right now with it is sager's NP8170-s1 (and a couple other verities).

For the sake of the asus thread, asus has the G733SW-A1 with the 2nd gen i7.

But if you are insistent on getting either the JH or the JW, either one is good. According to This thread, they both perform almost exactly the same. In other words, it comes down to weather you just like nvidia or ati better.

edit - as for the pros and cons between them, they are really the same in power.

only cons I can tell you right now is maybe the touchpad (for some) but there is already a fix being worked on right now for that. But I must say one is not better then the other.

edit - JH should be cheaper though, and JW does have a slightly better processor. ur choice.

I am mostly going to be buying the laptop in March. Is there going to be a major difference in the 2nd generation? Another thing is that my budget is $1700. Will the second generation fit in this?

    thanks.

Yeah, there is a difference, but ... well, gaming? No difference.

I would like to believe that most of the issues that we have on the current gen G73 (at least the JH models) are either non-existent or rectified already on the SW models.

As far as price, the SWs should be right in that range. If you don't want to wait, or want to go with something that has fixes available, the current gen G73s are available for under 1k refurbed.

I am really scared of buying the SW after hearing about the Cougar Point issues. I can wait for a month before making this purchase provided the error has been rectified.
I was really interested in JW-A1 model. Are there any problems with that particular one?

I am not in a hurry and since you already have the computer, I would like to ask you one thing. Should I go for JW-A1 or wait for the upgrade?

I tried searching for the Alienware m17x R3 but coulnt find it on their website. Have they launched it yet? Cos the basic 17inch model they have starts @ 1899 which is out of my budget.
I can wait until mid march since I am an International student, I will be back home for summers and the prices for the gaming laptops back home is really high.
Another thing, I have heard about the error on 2nd gen i7.
    thanks

I would get either this asus or this sager.

For gaming, the sager is better.

and the difference between the 1st gen i7 and the 2nd gen i7 is huge. Check the specs HERE

Main difference is the higher turbo frequency when all cores are active (ex my i7-720qm can only hit 1.73ghz when all cores are active but the i7-2630qm can hit 2.6ghz which is an insane difference).

edit -o, forgot to mention the 2nd gen i7 is able to give you something like 4 hours of battery life compared to mine which is around 1:30min depending on your power settings because of the integrated HD card inside the processor (switching between that and ur ati/nvidia card when needed).

I'd wait for a SW release. Asus was good and recalled the bad models, so when they are available again, they will be proper.

I just checked up sager but the problem is I have no idea about their services since I have owned any of their laptops. Another thing is when I select 485M while customizing it, The price shoots upto 1899 which is way to expensive for me.

I was really interested in the SW model. I called up xoticpc today and they were like the shipping for this model starts again in april-may which is way too late as I wont be in US. So thats my real concern.

Then they recommended me JW-A1. How is this model? Are the problems on it rectifed?

    I have 3:

G73JH-A1, had some growing pains with GSODs, but now works as expected.
G73JW-A1, works fine out of box, did a BIOS update to make it current
G53JW-A1, working fine, updated to 210 BIOS, no issues.

The basic model for Alienware starts at 1799 and with a little customization it comes up to 2200 which is out of my budget.
Sager is something that I might have to look into now. The only problem with it is the hard disk space. Its only 320 with the basic model and after increasing it to 1tb the price also increases significantly. So thats the problem. I called up Xotic PC again, they were like the new model with the 2nd generation will start shipping out in MAY. So the only option I have is g73JW-A1. Where can I find a decent unbiased review of it?
Another thing that convinces me towards buying Asus g73JW-A1 is the looks. It looks insane.
