so i took my g73jh apart to fix my headphone/mic jack problem and i accidentally borked my touchpad.. what happend i guess is when i went to plug the cable back up to the connector the small silver stripes ( not sure what they are called) on the cable had gotten all bent up..i tried to fix but said screw it..i have a naga anyway so i can use that for the time being.

anyway my question is.. do i need to replace the cable or the whole touchpad it self? another question i found the cable i need but it was in the g73jh-1a section. but on the description it just says g73jh...will this cable still work since its still a g73jh? The contacts got bent up? As in the foil came off?

You can try cutting the connector down with scissors to where the contacts aren't messed up, if there is any left.

sorry yes the contacts got bent up...are the silver strips foil..theres a few that were badly taken down...if one is completely missing will it still work? or do i need all of the contacts? i think theres at least 1 thats completely missing.

if it doesnt work could you answer my original question? as i figured it out its gonna cost me 42 bucks to replace the cable with shipping and i def dont want to make a 42 dollar mistake.

If it's completely missing you're out of luck. You'll need a new cable.

That one you linked looks right to me, but you may have a heart attack when you calculate shipping. Good luck.

No it's not that easy to get to the touchpad side of it. The board side is obviously easy to get to. http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...475907-asus-g73-series-disassembly-guide.html

As an alternative you could order the whole top chassis but it's not in stock here: http://www.laptopking.com/kingpartdetails.asp?ref=2059&category=case

You can also try stripping off the top of the bad end with a razor, obviously at your own risk since it's dangerous, but I've had to do that on things like digitizers etc. It's possible, just not very pretty or fun to do. You just need to expose the contacts again.

this may be a series of stupid questions but what do you mean by stripping? and why is it dangerous? does the touchpad side of it have the flip up bracket thing that holds the ribbon in place?

Basically you shave (strip) some of the plastic off of the ribbon cable and expose the metal again.

The other side will have a similar connector as the board has. I can't tell you exactly what it looks like because I haven't ever disassembled the touchpad module in the G73, and I can't find a pic of it.

haha. honestly though is that the only danger to it? it couldnt possibly mess up the motherboard or anything like that? its essentially just like the original cable after i shave the bad part off and expose the good part?

As long as you don't take the razor to anything but the cable you'll be fine. Either the cable makes a connection or it doesn't, it's not like there's a ton of power going over it and you're going to short something.

I tried to find a pic of this but failed, honestly you can try with scissors first and see if enough of the contacts are exposed for the touchpad to work.

ok thanks for the information and hopefully it will save me almost 50 bucks. my father does cable stripping for part of his job which he has been doing for almost 30 years so this should be no problem for him. but ill report back either way to let you know. once again thanks.
