I was planning on getting a g73jw before the end of the year. I had and still have no real interest in 3d gaming. But I just did a comparison between the two based on the following addons: 128gig crucial ssd for the main drive, 500gig seagate xt for the secondary hdd, blu ray burner, intel 6300 wifi, and recovery disc. Since the g73jw-3de came with the burner and xt drive the price for both of these configurations is within $20 (with the 3de actually being cheaper). I think I will be getting the 3de now considering the price will be almost exactly the same plus the 120hz screen will probably be better. I will still wait for the first reviews to come in before ordering but right now the 3de seems like a very good deal for me. It probably is for anyone also thinking about a similar configuration.

Sounds like pretty solid reasoning to me! That spec you have there is nice too. With that solid state drive, it should be a pretty sweet machine.

Did you factor in that you're getting the 3D Vision glasses as well?

I had not. That would probably be another $50-100 value. It says it includes the nVidia 3D Vision Kit so you also get an emitter for your tv? If so that would be a very nice extra.

I was actually going to pick up a G73JW last week when I heard about the upcoming update. The main reason that I was going to get one was that I heard that it's fairy quiet at idle or under light conditions. Do you see anything in the specs for the 3D that might raise the fan noise volume when the system isn't being stressed?

Even on my overclocked 800/1100 HD5870M G73 I'm under 60FPS average on a DX9 Dragon Age:Origins. And for DX11 games like BC2 usually around 45-50 FPS. The only games I have high FPS in are Batman AA and Left4Dead series which I don't play. DX10 in with everything on in Just Cause 2 in the low to mid 30s... And Starcraft 2 around 40-45 FPS. So I have hardly gamed ever on this machine where I get framerate that would justify 120hz LCD.

But if the 120hz LCD's color accuracy and contrast is just as good for same price, why not. But for some reason I have suspicion that yes it will b 120hz but it will be a compromise on the contrast and color accuracy.

    Just my 2 cents.

I really doubt it, most probably it's just the glasses.

    Nope.

That's too bad. If they don't give you the emitter then I guess you have to buy it from nvidia if you want to watch 3d blu rays on your tv. I mentioned the kit because that's what it says in the specs for the 73jw but it just says 3d glasses for the 53jw. Hopefully a dealer will clarify as it gets closer to release.

Also one of the main reasons why I haven't pre-ordered is because I'm waiting for a review of the screen. If it is somehow worse than the regular jw then I would be disappointed and instead go for the non 3d jw. If it looks the same or better then I will definitely buy it. The 3d games are unfortunate. They probably look cool but like it has been said most are probably unplayable unless you drop the resolution/settings a lot. Luckily I am not buying the laptop with 3d gaming as my main motivation so to me it's a cool extra but I probably won't end up using it much.

Why do you need another emitter? You can use the integrated one with external screens as well.
