I got Trend with my G53. I use avast though. That and avg are the best free antivirus softwares I've used.

You should use MSE, Trend is pretty crappy and by pretty crappy I mean total crap.

    eset nod32 ftw.....

an extremely powerful system protection program that is ultra light on system resources. i put it on anyone's system that i work on and there are never any complaints. and again i say, it is not a resource hog. i just does what it is supposed to do.

    edit:

    wow. this is eye opening....

BTW antivirus programs only slow down gaming performance when they are on or their services are on.

I use that AV comparison site, too. Tbh I used to use ESET, but since MSE came out I've just been using it because it's easy, free and lightweight. Oh and good too. Not the best, but good.

Personally use MSE too. AVG was good a few years ago, but has since become bloated and unreliable at best.

Not only disable the antivirus program when running games but go to Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services and disable any service related to the antivirus program.

This is recommended so that the antivirus program won't interfere with the game.

The reason there's a drop in performance is because antivirus scans may kick in, software update service kicks in, they also use system resources when on. Windows Defender is also reported to use a good deal of system resources.

I personally can only imagine an antivirus program that is scanning files automatically while playing game and what that is doing to hard drive performance as well as the memory consumption, along with the added cpu cycles.

I tend to disagree. This old school approach of conserving system resources and CPU cycles isn't really necessary on the G73. I used to disable AV when gaming on my old laptops but I don't bother anymore because I never noticed the difference. We're talking about 8 virtual cores and 8 gigs on Win 7 here. I've even run Internet browsers in the background while gaming, alt-tabbing between the two and not had a noticeable slowdown. Maybe it depends on what AV you use. I use Avast free edition

It might be a hard drive access/stuttering problem, if his AV is trying to scan while the game tries to load...

Decent AVs scan the executables you launch, including all of the related DLLs, plus perform DLL injection checks, memory patching checks and whatnot. Of course that is going to affect performance, but that's the price of security.

Just a FYI, the upcoming ESET 5.0 AV will have a Game Mode which will disable notifications and use less CPU resources.

... or just run an AV?

Or have a nice VHD image (or image of your choice) of a fully configured install on a fast USB key for quick restore.

But all that wasted HD space... when it's not particularly faster than restoring from a good USB key, and is still vunerable to infection (esp. bootmgr issues)...

    Pretty much.

Im justing sticking with MSE including windows firewall for now. Seems to work just fine.

I used to use Bitdefender and i really liked when a notice popped up saying someone else joined the network, but other than that - too much hassle!
