So this might be a stupid comparison but I know that both the g73sw and g53sw virtually have the same parts and whatnot. My main question is how portable is the g53sw. I wouldn't need it to be super portable so I can take it to class everyday but maybe once in a while I might have to take it around somewhere with me. I feel like if the g53 isn't very portable I will just go for the g73, since I watch a lot of movies and based on previous reviews the g73 seems to have less problems (e.g. DOA). how is the g53sw on battery life, and how is it after being optimized? Do you think it'll be better to go for the desktop replacement route with the g73?

I think you should go to BestBuy or somthing and check it your self. they both... 3.5KG-4KG(8lbs I think) the G53SW is almost 18 inch I think, and the G73 is 20 inch

Weight is very similar, so I'd recommend the one with the bigger screen. Since you're only carrying it around occasionally, who cares? The comfort of a larger screen is worth it.
BTW, I carry arround my 73 with no problems. :)

They really are about the same foot print and only 1lb difference. If you get the A1 models of them you'll also get a backpack. Asus used to use the exact same backpacks for both models if that helps you with getting an idea of how similar they are. They're different backpacks now though.
