I was wondering if I should invest so much in a laptop... rather buy a PS3 and a 1K laptop...comments??

Depends on your needs. Which has more games you like? Do you have a computer already? Are you willing to build a desktop? Look at what each has to offer and see which one fits your needs more, no one can make this decision besides yourself.
-
for 1k, you can build a really nice desktop, or get a mid-range gaming laptop.
-
Console gaming if you want quick gaming without much settings to adjust and if just want to game on a couch with your buddies.
I would say for First Person Shooters, I recommend PC gaming because using a keyboard and a mouse is more natural and you feel more involve than using a console controller.
You also have to understand that a ps3 cost $300 and a gaming laptop over $1000 but with a ps3 you are crippled with almost anything a pc can do. Sure a ps3 can surf the web or have online mutiplayer capabilties or play music/video but a pc can do it way better and more comfortable with a real Operating System/Keyboard for typing and a monitor -
I have to disagree with everyone here. I think consoles have killed pc gaming. GameStop doesn't even carry pc games anymore. The G73 is my first gaming pc since I built my Celeron 333 in 1999. In that time pc gaming has in my opinion been totally outclassed by consoles. Almost all the games are optimized for console, the pc is ported over as an afterthought to sell a few more copies, but it's really nothing compared to the millions that will sell on consoles.
Although ps3 network kinda sucks, xbox live is way better than most pc gaming community programs. Everyone on xbox live has a headset and chatting is easy and fun. Every COD server I go on is almost complelely devoid of chat when I play on pc though. Also console games have great resale value, pc games have almost none due to DRM/steam type accounts. Sure pc graphics are great but when it comes to game play and fun with friends the consoles are just as good (better in my opinion) and way cheaper. Plus my lazyboy couch is more comfy than any office chair I've sat in recently.
I love my G73, but I think it will be my last gaming pc. By the time it outdated my two year old will be ready to play games and I'll play whatever he does. -
PSN is fine in my opinion and I actually find more people with mics on PSN than on Live because everyone and their mother uses the party chat feature. I'm guilty of that too but party chat has kind of made everything pretty dead quiet on Live. I'd rather be in a private chat with my friends than hear 5 people from the Philly blasting rap music over the mic or some kids, I usually mute any annoying people otherwise on both. Overall I see no difference between PSN and Live at all besides the party chat.
The one thing I like about PC gaming is that the games become ridiculously cheap really fast unlike on consoles so resale value really means nothing. If you can wait a few months than you can get that game you wanted for $5-$10. PC gaming isn't as big as consoles but it still has a presence. Oh and I game on my recliner with everything even the G73. Hell I game on my bed with the G73, yay for portability. -
I don't want to buy a desktop for sure... The G73 SW is 1.8k... I have played black ops on my friends G73JW and there is a little bit of stuttering, I have no experience with PS3.. so I though why not get a laptop for surfing web watching movies, some programing and let PS3 handles the gaming...Would I miss anything other than the mobility if i get a PS3?

I just took a good friend out to a steak dinner ($80 gone), he is a pc gaming nut, and he had a good point. You can enjoy both, it doesn't have to be one or the other. To quote him, "super smash brothers has to be played on a 42"+ screen with 10 people watching to get maximum enjoyment (imagine street fighter at the arcade but in your living room), but Supreme Commander (and other RTS are a joke on a console compared to pc."
He has a great point. Each device can be enjoyed for it's own reasons. Personally if portability wasn't an issue I would much rather game with my ps3 56" DLP and 5.1 surround sound than my G73. But I can't travel with those so the G73 is my main gaming rig. Only you can decide which fits you best.
As for your friends COD stutter on the G73, neither the JH or JW should have any problems with any COD, he must have a software or driver problem. My G73 runs the game at 40-60+ FPS at all times.
For $1000 you could buy a refurb G72 with a GTX260 and a still have money left for a PS3 -

I have both PS3 and a G73 and to choose between the two is rather difficult, I think it depends on what games you play and who you play it with.
I of course use my G73 much more than the PS3 because i don't constantly have friends over. The only reason i actually use the PS3 is as a Blu-Ray Player and when friends are over. But other than that the G73 is my main gaming platform. -
PS3 = 299$
Gaming Laptop = 1700$
Making all my friend jealous when they see i have a G73 and a PS3
Priceless -

It depends on the games that you want to play. Some games are only for consoles, some are only for PC, while some are for both consoles and PC. This beast made the games portable as you don't have to carry your whole desktop rig or gigantic LCD TV just to play on LAN party (if you have a set of friends capable of doing so). It's like a car which you can brag about your friends, compare benchmark points, FPS, head-turning design, latest hardware onboard and a lot of stuff for the sake of bragging rights.
That's a scene to drool about

I don't want to hear this, "I never really get lag" crap because you are lying. Yes I get it on XBL, and yes i get it on my pc, but atleast on those, you can control it. XBL boots the crummy connection and gives it to the best in the room, and you can choose which server/ping you play to on PC. I own every game console and the G73JH, and I would pick them in this order for gaming: Xbox 360, G73, PS3.
And as for the mic thing, I completely agree with Valk. Yes there are some annoying people/children on XBL, and thats the reason there is party chat, but I would conclude that 3:1 have mics over the PS3. There is nothing wrong with party chat, it allows me to only have to hear my teammates and not some 12yr old screaming into his mic.
I am not a microsoft fanboy, nor am I a ps3 hater. I just know that even thought the PSN is free, it still doesn't have near the resources that XBL has. -
If you want strategy games and FPS go PC. If you want RPG or story heavy game, get PS3. Both are good for gaming, just depends on your taste.
If I am bored with PC sometimes I play PS3 but more likely I am watching movies on PS3 and anime -
trust me, consoles and pc gaming are very different experience.
I personally prefer consoles because there are more varieties of good games.
If you are talking about ps3, you are looking at games like GT5, uncharted series, killzone 2 (this is the only console fps I really enjoyed), final fantasy 13, demon soul, little big planet 2
upcoming games like infamous 3, Catherina, and quite a lot others, this year is insanely good for the PS3.
as for online gaming, psn is free and usually no lag at all, given your internet is stable enough and you aren't playing online on a new released game on the 1st week.
To be honest, PSN really is surprising smooth. I spent long hours on killzone 2 and demon soul. I was worrying about the lag for demon soul because that game can get you killed in a matter of seconds, so that's why I say there is rarely any lag at all.
Also the PSN games are quite fun and stylish, price are quite low as well.
while PC are really mainly for fps, mmorpg and rts gaming.
I only play starcraft 2 on my G73JW for now (looking forward to diablo 3)
the games are usually more lasting but I have more fun with my console games since there are lots of good games, especially becuz i can read japanese -
I don't lag on PSN...depending on the game. Bad Company 2? Near flawless on PS3. Uncharted 2? Flawless. The majority of any games that aren't named COD? Flawless. I almost never lag. Any COD game (Sans Black Ops) on both systems? Mileage may vary. Sometimes I get great games, sometimes it's absolutely terrible because the game I'm joining has a host from Russia with 100 kb/s internet. The only game I've seen that is really laggy on PS3 and not on 360 is Black Ops which is not PSN's fault, it's Treyarch's. There is really no difference between the two sans the network exclusive features, that's it. Online gaming is pretty much exactly the same. -
For you to say that wireless has no effect is crazy. Its like people expect to get the same speeds and pings wired vs wireless when in all actuality you cant. I have played several hundred hours on both systems, and starting that on pc as well. I have a 50mbps connection at home and a 300mbps at work, so I get no lag no matter where I play because I play wired. I can tell you the difference in any shooter, wired or wireless. And XBL does have the ability to NOT give you host, even though it is more Treyarch's fault. If a game lags on XBL, it may take 30 seconds, but the host WILL change. I've played 3 games in a row on the same crappy host on PSN.
-
So no, using wifi will not make your gaming super laggy and unbearable. Depends on the person's setup and configuration. XBL does not have that ability, all of that is on the dev's side of things. Also that does not happen, I've gone many a game on Live where it was just a lagfest and the game did NOTHING. The system is pretty much the same where the game will try to pick the best host but it never always pans out that well on either system. -

Being a ps3, g73, and until recently 360 owner for the past 3 years, I cant really choose a 'preferred' system. Each one has its own pros and cons that I'm not even going to get into. I will also say that PC gaming is NOT dead. People have been saying PC gaming is going to die next year for the past 10 years and its still going strong. Yes, its lacking developer support in the level consoles get, but its nowhere near 'dead'.
As far as XBL vs PSN. I'd prefer XBL just because of all the features available. For some who doesn't need the XBL gimmicks , save the $50/60 annual fee and stick with PSN. -
I loved playing AOE, commandos, Mafia on my old PC... i also like NFS, GTA etc.... seems like i'll get the SW once it hits the 1500 mark and then later get a PS3 and then make all my friends jealous
-
I agree that pc isn't "dead" but it is getting worse in my opinion. I worked at software etc in 1996 during high school, I loved it, a whole store devoted to pc games. Now the closest thing to that is GameStop, and all they have is a tiny endcap with a few pc games. Steam sales are a big strength but it seems like every year pc market share is getting smaller and smaller. As one person pointed out, Blizzard is almost sustaining pc gaming on it's own. I think the next gen console will use digital downloads as the primary media (like steam). Also computing power is getting to the point where they are saying the next consoles may be sold as software for your cable box. That is going to be hard for pc's to compete with, especially if tablets replace a lot of desktops (which may or may not happen). -

I was in the same situation, with my two best friends pressuring on me for the ps3, so that I could join their MW2/Black Ops/KZ clan...
I ended up picking the g73 because of many reasons (ps3 would have used Wi-Fi only as connection method, and I play shooters only for the most part, so I prefer have a mouse and a keyboard in my hands for them)
I'd suggest you anyway to think and answer those questions, they should help you if you're still unsure:
How much Do you like RPG and 2d/3d fighting games?
Mouse + Keyboard or Pad?
You know my opinion already...
What about Action games...
There are plenty of those for both systems, and you can use a gaming pad on your pc too if that's the matter.
Sport/Racing Games
I don't play them, but anyway I think they are a bit more common on console I guess, I can't help here
RTS, massive online RPG, simulation games in general
I believe on those genders, PC beats console 10-0...
How much MONEY do you have for it?
Last point:
As other said already, PS3 is way cheaper than a G73, even after adding a good big HD TV...
But since you considered already the option of purchasing a gaming laptop I guess you have the money...
Also nobody mentioned that even GAMES cost...
Also, just something that black ops reminded us:
On a console, you put the game, you play, sometime they release a patch, and you go...
Harder to cheat, easier to play...
Hope that this helped... -
By far the reasons I will stay with a PC over a console PS3 or xbox is very simple until console have a control system that I can change what key input I want on controller and program to button A not B or what have you.
I tried a PS3 and this key input rigid no modification drove me nuts I returned it and never looked back.
I never even play a PC game with key board it is always a n52te fully programmable game pad key inputs where I want them for all SPS games / Ch Products for flight sim games.
Driving wheels for all car type games.
They all have one thing in common full user programing of key inputs and a lot of other things that can be set by user.
If software for PC gaming disappears I will stop playing games period before I ever go to a console. -
Plus now hacked/CFW for PS3 is out so I would think they will have the same thing.
-
A PC gaming experience is MUCH better than what any consoles can offer.
Hands down a laptop over the ps3. -
