hi all,
symptoms:
start steam, whole laptop freezes, no errors, no bsod, has to force restart
issue happened since:
since when i installed the nvidia 266.35 beta drivers, i've since removed the drivers completely (driver sweeper and all) and went back to 265.66.
what I've done:
1.) reinstall steam completely (remove register and all), i've found that the newly installed steam was able to launch and get updates, after that it'll restart and that's when the freezing happens again.
2.) I can run steam under safe mode, with or without network
3.) If i have internet access, it will freeze immediately upon launching steam. it's the same for wired and wireless.
3.1) if i don't have internet access it will run and not freeze, but UI does not load, not even visible on taskbar, the steam.exe process is present in task manager.
4.) Attempt to rollback using system restore and the restore will fail
5.) reinstall video drivers completely (uninstall at device manager, uninstall nvidia control center, driver sweep, delete nvidia corp folders)
6.) I can play games that aren't under steam
7.) attempt to disable as many unnecessary processes as i can in normal mode and tried running steam, freezes too.
8.) my GPU CPU temps are fine
9.) removed avast antivirus
10.) removed punkbuster
any helpful advise would be appreciated, thanks!
update:
alright, seems to be related to ease of access center issue, i start the application and immediately same freeze symptoms
ease of access center still locks up the laptop after creative X-FI was removed. hmm.... steam continues to lock up... this looks very bad
update:
fixed the issue after i removed realtek 248 modded driver for creative X-FI, ease of access still locks up laptop, are there any known fixes for this? is a new windows install gonna fix this?

Update your Realtek audio drivers to 2.56 and HDMI to 2.55

Sounds like you're encountering the same problems most people do with modded software - it doesn't work quite right, and CAN cause conflicts.
Also, it's the same problem many people experienced with the creative software installed. I believe (as Chas said) an audio driver update will help - BUT not if it's modded software causing the crashing. Try uninstalling any creative software - or using the AMD64 patch.
help, steam crashing/freezing my G73jw
