I have had my G73jh for about 2 month now, and have noticed a high pitched frequency sound coming from the laptop when I am running on battery power. The sound seems to change (get quiet, louder, etc.) when I scroll down a long page, like a forums page when I use the mouse wheel. I thought I was imagining it, but when I put my ear close to the keyboard it is there. Others in my house have confirmed that it is there. It is not very loud, but when in a quiet place surfing or typing an e-mail, you can hear it.
It makes no difference if I go on to AC power. The sound remains.
I have flashed the BIOS (unfortunately using the winflash appbut it seemed to work w/o a hitch). I am still on all the stock drivers as everything else seems to be working fine on the laptop. As I am not sure where the problem lies (or maybe this is normal?) I don't really want to update drivers unless necessary - don't try to fix what ain't broke philosophy, I guess.
Is anyone familiar with this phenomena or experiencing the same thing? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.![]()

It's probably the GPU. Mine made (don't know if it still does) a high pitched, almost mosquito sound from the right side under the keyboard, which is the GPU. It generally did this while idle, never noticed it while under load.
-
Yes, that is exactly what mine sounds like, yet it seems to be constant and only changes when I scroll the page.
Did you have it repaired?
I am wondering if updating the driver may solve the problem. However, from looking at many of the posts on this site in regards to GPU issues and this model, I don't want to introduce a GPU or display problem in the process.
I have read that users shouldn't update using the drivers from the ATI site. Only the driver supplied by Asus is safe as the GPU is probably modified for G73J application. I am wondering if this is true also. -
My laptop didn't go into RMA for the noise. But it was repasted while they had it, so I'll let you know if anything changed. I'm sure if there was something wrong, they would have replaced the GPU. I specifically noted to the tech that it was making the noise and that I want it replaced if there's something wrong.

Make sure your power outlets are properly grounded.
If you have your G73 hooked up to external speakers, make sure they're on a different power outlet from the laptop.
I use KRK Rokit 8" Studio Monitors with my laptop and anytime I used the mouse it would make a high-pitched whining sound through the speakers, until I switched my G73 to a different outlet (presumably on a different circuit altogether in my home).
Hope this helps, and if it doesn't, sorry for butting in -
That's nothing scary. It's choke coils on your videocard. It won't harm your laptop or decrease performance. They just came from factory that way.I am sure that this noise getting louder on some heavy gaming. If yes that's it. Desktop videocards also suffers from that.

Is the noise loud? I can't hear it. Is it something you would have to put your ear up to in order to hear it? I just hear the fans running, but they are really quiet... very soft sound.
-
No, the noise is not loud. It is like Kaelang described as an annoying mosquito sound. Very high pitch and only obvious if the surroundings are really quiet and the fans are low. I had a hunch that it may be something with the GPU as the sound changes when the screen contents changes.
I guess I will let it go unless/until something goes wonky with the laptop.
Would repasting the GPU be a good suggestion? I have pasted CPUs to heat sinks in the past with no problem. Is this something a relatively handy/computer competent person could do, or is it suggested to RMA it? -
If your temps are high (like above 68C idle) you may want to consider it.
