This is really annoying, continuous static sounds are making me sick. it's not from the fan may be from the hdd. when i got nothing running still it has got this continuous sound. i know someone told me that laptop doesn't make more than this sound when it is under huge processing pressure. but when it has got nothing to do, this sound is unacceptable.

If you want to fix it, you could get an SSD hdd. they are silent...

Just to confirm this static sound does it come and go like a screeching banshee or is it constant? My old HDD after I punched it in a testosterone furied rage made a constant flick flick sound which was damn annoying.

If it is near the HDD just run a HDtune health check to see if you have some bad sectors. SSD is always a good choice if the HDD needs replacing.

I have realised now that the sound is not coming from hard drive, it's from the machine but definitely not from the fan as i can't feel any air coming out or going through. what else could cause this continuous sound.
Yiddo..it's constant sound. whenever fan triggers up i know its fan sound. what else is making this sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Without seeing your laptop I have not got a clue could you record the sound if possible? use a mobile phone recorder not the laptop mic.

How do you describe static sound?

Didn't someone post a "fix your speakers" thread here that included a pic of a wire hanging in a fan that he found during dis-assembly?

I noticed it just browsing, no idea where....but if the OP thinks it's when the fans spin up...maybe?

That is true if it sounds like physical noise the wireless cables run across the right side fan if one is loose it could cause it.

Really difficult to diagnose without hearing it, have you disassembled recently?

Actually sound is coming from the electronics, its not physical. I have compare with other cheap laptop which is £299..those machines are running wothout any sounds but when my machine runs my room mate who is 10ft away can hrar the sound. This is mechanical sound. I have disassamled until i can get to hdd. I didnt see any fan.

I think the sound is from the cpu idle mode.. or atleast it emits a similar high pitched sound..
try cycling through battery and power mode to see if it affects the sound..

The only fix to this sound is disabling idle mode on the cpu but this causes it to idle hotter

Google "disable idle cpu sound" to get more info about it

If you have unplugged the charger and it fixes the problem, Kurt could be onto something but instead of taking the CPU off idle try to do the opposite. When plugged in the laptop state of your CPU/GPU clocks will be on high performance and when you whip out the charger it will drop to Battery Saving mode for these.

Even so for you to have this sound when running high performance it does not seem right however it might mean that your fans are running faster creating this sound. What Kurt said might be a temporary fix for you though or you can go into the advanced power settings and set the CPU to run at idle and set the GPU or ATI Power management to run on Battery Saving which will drop your clocks down lowering your temps and thus reducing the fan speed.

I am still however unsure what exactly the sound is if it was coming the GPU and it happens on high performance I would say Capacitors, you can test this by running Furmark and seeing if the whining sound gets louder when under heavy stress.

I was thinking Caps too - the OP could try prime95 also, to isolate whether it is gpu or cpu related.

From the sound of it (no pun intended :p ) it doesn't take too much to get it going.

We need a sound file to verify.
Kurt is speaking about something also known as CPU whining. Google it and you will see you're not alone. It's a sound coming from some coils or vrm's which regulates the CPU VID states. You can try to manipulate the power settings as suggested. But if you have it you can't really fix it.
My SSD makes some high pitch noise too. It is hearable in silent environment.

Thanks Yiddo....i have run google earth, adobe cs5, itune, mozilla with 10tabs and same time played NFS-THE RUN. All of these programs were opened together (not minimized) but the sound didn't go louder than that and at that time i heard the sound of the fan. Someone in this forum already said that noise doesn't go higher than this when cpu is in stress. Anyway...i will give it a go tonight. And also for power management, i have picked up entertainment mood. So even when i unplugged the charger it doesn't change.

Hi Yidoo, i have run the stress test by furmark. That stastic sound remains same level of loud. Just the fan sound increases. I have tried to record the sound by my HTC Desire HD. But recording sound turns to be horrible.i will try tonight again. I really want my machine to be soundless except fan soubd. Because of that I have ordered a hybrid hdd as well just in case hdd produces sound . So please guys help me.

try enabling the cpu idle state.. if this eliminates sound then its cpu whining.. and as @tilla said, there's nothing that can be done about it except for disabling the cpu idle state but that causes the cpu to run hotter at idle and in turn the fan to run faster and louder..

Do you guys think it could be coming from his power charging circuit? Maybe he needs to RMA and get the motherboard replaced? I would send it in with the power supply so they can test both parts together. It certainly could be the CPU too. If it was mine, I would want a new CPU that doesn't whine. This would definitely be an RMA for me. Modifying power states would only be a workaround.

If you find the noise stops when removing the charger, you could be experiencing a ground loop. See http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=688616

Try plugging into an outlet that you know has a good ground to see if it eliminates the noise. If it does not, I would suspect a faulty charger like Jody. Alternatively, bring your laptop and charger to an electrical shop where they can be tested.

That's a good point but it's going to be hard to test at home. If the ground is bad it may be the house wiring. Would need to test at a different place like an office or school. It could certainly be the single outlet but a lot of times it's the whole circuit or maybe the house feed doesn't have an earth ground.

Ground loops usually make a generated sound and don't sound like a physical problem. It would be more like speakers hissing and less like a wire ticking against a 5000 RPM muffin fan.

Furthermore, I'm not sure the ground is connected to anything but the primary side of the transformer in the brick. I believe the DC generated on the secondary is all induced and is not physically connected to the ground in any way. The noise would have to be coming from the power supply for this to be the cause. Just my two cents.

Did you run HDTune to see if the HDD was damaged>?

What was mentioned above about the circuit or the brick even could be right as well if the HDD makes no difference and the static stops when you pull the plug you could either have a dodgy brick or something bad in your mobo. If that is the case you dont want to leave that till its too late.

Did this start after you did a dissassembly or just in general?

Hi Cylphid, what did you mean by Cap? And what is OP stand for? I have tried all the process including CPU idle Mode. The whining sound can not be heard as the fans run too loud. This sound is driving me crazy...it's not coming from hdd, it's from CPU or GPU.. but the good thing is the sound doesn't increase too nuch during the heavy load. Is there anyone having any kind of sound? When i am in silent room i can hear this annoying sound. Sometimes sound turns to grinding sound...then after that fans sound and again continious low pitch sound...it's nothing like mosquito humming.. it's pretty nuch like air blowing fan sound....but i barely can feel any air coming through.

I have the same sound cpu whining as you but mine is only clearly audible under load, but since I use headphones most of the time, it doesnt bother me..

The cpu idling method which I had previously mentioned fixes the sound but causes the cpu to run hotter and fans louder so dont really use it.

Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, there is no proper fix for this issue.

btw OP stands for original poster aka person who started the thread aka you!

I have diagnosed my laptop and found the sound comes from the fans as they spins all the time. so it's NOT CPU WHINING sound. Is there any upgraded fan or better fan that i can replace these with to get rid of the sound? at night when i am working on quiet environment this fans sound become unbearable. I am attaching here my Temp and windows task managers photos so that you guys can have a look how much load my laptop is in average. Yiddo..I am looking for your attention please.
