Due to physical differences between i5 and i7 based G53 models, I think a dedicated thread would be useful as a community know-how!

And Im opening it with couple of questions :): where is the second RAM slot located and what type of socket does the CPU uses (BGA1288 or PGA988)? Can it be upgraded to an i7 720QM (PGA 988 ONLY)?

What are the physical differences between i5 and i7 besides the disabled ram slots?

    i5 vs i7
    720p vs 1080p screen
    2 ram slots vs 4
    1x 5400rpm 500gb hd vs 2 x 7200rpm 500gb hd
I also believe that the warranty is only one years well.

I really like the graphics card and design of the G53, however I am not sure I really need the i7, is the one with i5 a lot cheaper? (I could not find any on line retailer for the i5 option)

there isn't a huge difference between the two in terms of performance. Don't think we need a dedicated sub-thread for g53 i5s ... no reason, really.

DCx: yes we do, the physical differences are quite a few. Its easier to find answers when information is centralized.

The 2nd ram slot is the one hidden, below the "not soldered one" under the keyboard. To reach it you need to crack it wide open...

Would be nice to have a dedicated thread. If we would... it would had been easier for me to find out that i5 version has only 2 ram slots before buying an aditional 2x2GB to upgrade my G53. Lucky me, i had no issued changing the 2x2GB for 1x4GB sodimm.

Where did you all purchase the i5 version of the G53? I haven't seen it for sale anywhere...

A G53SW with i5 just became available in my region (Holland) for just below 1000 EUR: the "G53SW-SX105V"
    RAM 4.096 MB
    Intel Core i5
    i5-2410M
    1366 x 768 Pixels
    HDD 640 GB
    Serial ATA
    5.400 RPM

Can I be sure this config is not too underpowered?

I do not have a lot of experience with ROG laptops.
It would not be used for heavy gaming: an ocassional session of a RTS or Warcraft.
I am mostly looking at the G53SW for the design, quietness, backlit keyboard.
The only thing that I see as a negative point is the 1366x768 resolution, I do not understand why they don't offer 1600x900.
