i am planning to buy asus g73jh-x5 from microcenter but i saw so many gpu temperature problem on g73 models. so many ppls are saying it shoots up over 100c and auto restart when playing intense 3d games for 20 mins or so. my current gateway p-7805u equipped with x9100 and geforce 9800m gts never go beyond 85c even playing crisis warhead for hours. as much as i am excited to finally upgrade my laptop but i am also concerned about this crazy gpu temperature. also i saw this video on youtube to upgrade ur cpu or gpu. i don't care about gpu since i won't be upgrading b4 i buy next laptop but is it that annoying to get to cpu? my current laptop, i only had to open back panel to get access to cpu. is this g73 also like that or do i have to tear apart practically everything as shown on that video to upgrade cpu?

It will take you about 10 min total to do a cpu swap and that's if you take your time cleaning all the old thermal paste off.
-
Its like upgrading HPs. You have to take the whole thing apart to get to the cpu, gpu and fourth memory bank since theyre on the other side of the motherboard under the keyboard.
If youre expirienced 15 minutes at least, since the plastic is fragile and you have to take your time, if youre not could take over an hour. -

I couldn't find the link, so here's a helpful youtube video from BTOtech that shows the teardown of a G73.
YouTube - Asus G73Jh Disassembly Take Apart G73 Replace Video Card G73 service manual
I can't speak to temps, as I've never experienced an issue with the G73. 12 hour gaming sessions or 6 hour video encoding projects, it's never given my any problems whatsoever. -
Yea forget about the CPU is a huge work and it will void your warranty.
Here temps hitting 62c and on full load while intense gaming 83c.
My local temperature is 23 with air con out side temperature is 30 degrees. -
Wow, they really screwed that up. Should have just left it like the G51 where you only have to take off part of the back cover.

ok, next question. is g73jh-x5 newer model than a1 or a2?
i've seen a1, a2 around but never seen x5 b4. i hope it comes
with lastest bio and upgrades.
i was tempted to order it from gentech pc but it's A1 model
and it's online. if something goes wrong, i have to wait weeks to
get rma. considering how picky i am, if i see one dead pixel or
white bleeched screen on the day i receive, i will go crazy.
micro center is only half mile away from my work so i can go
bark at them if something goes wrong but online? dohh..
seems gentech pc's deal is really good though. with cash discount
i can get same spec with bigger hdd(1tb) + backpack for same
price. micro center $1499 + tax = like $1600, no backpack and
only 640gb hdd. but it's x5 model so i can expect some improvement
over a1 or a2 model, right? -
Have you used ThrottleStop on your X9100 to unlock the multiplier? Most X9100 CPUs can run reliably at 3.6 GHz to 3.8 GHz without too much trouble.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...unlock-core-2-extreme-multiplier-windows.html
After you do that, you might not have as much need to upgrade. The old X9100 is a beast when allowed to run at full speed. -
paying attention to. -
Bios support is not needed. This was just discovered very recently so read that link I posted and download ThrottleStop. It's open season for the multiplier and VID voltage now. Some users are benching at 4.0 GHz.
-
but i am really tempted to upgrade gpu.. 5870 has like 15-20% improvement over 9800m gts 1gb, right? -
Your logic is completely wrong. Micro center will sell you the laptop in the box the got it without checking anything, so theres a much higher chance to get a defective one, while GenTechPC will make sure there are no dead pixels or other problems if you ask them to. And the RMA is the same with either GenTechPC or Micro center - the seller arranges for the laptop to be sent to the same Asus authorised repair center, so there will be no difference in how long the RMA would take. -
oh, that's good. is ur g73jh-a1 working good?
did it come with all lastest bios and no temperature, speaker problems?
i am really interested in that model but i am afraid of online buying laptop.
though i buy all my desktop parts online. =) -
I havent had time to even open the box yet, will tell you once i get round to it (prolly tomorrow).

My gpu temps max out at 96C on TSS1, less on the others on a game binge. I wouldn't say "lots of people claim 100C temps and are shutting down", but only a few, compared to the whole user base.
-
oh, and hellcry, unfortunately, that program doesn't work for my gateway p-7805u. multiplier doesn't go up beyond 11.5x and voltage is stuck at 1.2375 at highest. no overclocking for me. =( -
I believe the thermal protection kicks in about 105C
-
-
oh i c.. i had to right click and unlock max fid/vid to up my multiplier and voltage. what's stable and safe voltage for say around 3.5-3.6ghz for x9100?
i am not sure how good p-7805u cooling system but i applied really good thermal paste when i swapped my cpu last year. -
-
i ended up thinking overclocking my current laptop isn't good idea afterall.
i set multiplier to 13x which gets me 3.5ghz on my x9100 and i set voltage on 1.235 which is lowest allowed for that clock to run prime 95 test without failing in first min. but even at only 1.235v, temperature shoots up to 85c in 5 mins with prime 95 test and tzs0 & 1 temperatures went up to 98c which is too high for my laptop. without overclocking max temperature i get is like 77c for hours of prime test and probably like 88c for tzs0 & 1. i don't want to toast my laptop for mere .5ghz sake cuz it doesn't make that much difference in performance anyway. good program though. finally a way to overclock x9100 on gateway p-7805u. just it's not for me.
is it this annoying to upgrade cpu? gpu temperature question
