So I just picked this bad boy up, hoping for a dramatic improvement over my Alienware M11x...so far it's failing badly.

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 and installed all drivers from the Asus disc. I've set the overclock to boost mode, changed the power setting to high performance and done a reboot since doing so.

With medium settings in World of Warcraft I'm getting sub 10-15 fps in stormwind. It was also locking up and getting 5-10 fps in League of Legends.

Theres no way this should be normal.

It should be noted I tried to update with the newest ATI drivers and they wouldn't work....they'd boot up and the max resolution i could get would be like 1440...very odd.

Update to the latest Bios (213) and vBios. You need to update the vBios for AMD drivers to work properly. I'm running on 11.6 right now and the performance is rock solid in the games i play.

Also considering you're on the Asus 9.something drivers, uninstall them completely, run ATI crap cleaner and only then install 11.6. After you checked if you vBios was up to date of course.

Just to make sure, you are playing plugged in AC, not on battery right?

    1. Don't use Twin Turbo mode as it has the opposite effect.
    2. Don't use the drivers on the ASUS disc and always get the latest drivers from their website or more conveniently here: G73 Series Driver and Application Reference.
    3. Update the BIOS and vBIOS if you haven't.

    1. Not if you use the windows timing fix it doesn't the Twin Turbo mode provides the same boost as overclocking to 153PLL or 1.7ghz-3.0ghz as long as you apply the Unclewebb timing fix. I show this is my ma hoovie in my sig.

Congrats on your JH :D It is an aweeeeeeesome laptop! ATI FTW! As Tijo says BIOS it up to get the latest drivers to run and all issues to be addressed. You need to flush the stock drivers off once you update the Vbios otherwise you will BSOD when you update em. Use driver sweeper and then install 11.6.

I got the bios to work, but doing the vbios it just starts up with a dash in the top left corner...doesn't take me into DOS...really annoying

Yeah I followed the instructions and tried two different USB keys...using the HP loader. Should I be able to see the windows files themselves on the usb key or are they hidden?

Pretty sure they are hidden. You'll end up with a black screen saying C:\> and that's it.

    That's really strange....
I just used another loader and it showed all the files. Both are Cruzer's by Sandisk....

I go to bios, click on USB key as first boot, then save changes and reboot...and it's just a - in the top left corner flashing and i cant type. Really frusterating. I absolutely have to have the vbios installed to install the new display drivers?

If you run in an Admin Command prompt:

"bcdedit /set useplatformclock true" and reboot, TwinTurbo will work with TurboBoost properly, and not cause a slower system.

Yes. Your Cruzer may have some sort of recovery boot software thingy (I forget what's it called) and may need to have it uninstalled to make it bootable.

What are some of you guys getting in 3dMark06?
I would have thought it'd be faster than my I5-760 with 260GTX desktop

The I5 gives a good CPU count because 3DMark06 makes good use of the high clocks for Duel Core. More than what the 720QM produces.

I can diss my 720QM now as my 920XM is in the post :D :D :D
