    gx740 has i7 720
asus has i7 740 plus two more gigs of ram.

The contenders aren't even in the same weight class.

The difference between the 720 and 740 really is negligible, especially considering how easily they both overclock.

The 2 gigs of ram is a $40 consideration ... but ... well, pick your poison. It's all the same, really.

I prefer asus service to MSI service, though.

That MSI laptop has a 1680x1050 crap screen.

    Go for the Asus.

The MSI screen is junk and the brightness is very weak. It's the worst screen I've ever seen in my life (I used to own it).

    Edited: typo

heard games played at lower res screen gives much more fps(smoother)..
again playing at a res lower than your native res reduces display quality..
    for example:
    playin in 1366x768 res
better display quality if native res is 1366x768 rather than 1920x1080....
i just heard this..whats your take on this?does it suffer that much??
    :)

I didnt even see him list a specific version of the GX740 that would tell me that was the res screen he was getting.

First version I come to on both XoticPC and NewEgg is a 1680x1050 model...

My bad, the res was a typo. But the fact still remains that the Asus is 1080 (HD) and the MSI has an awful res :p

The brightness is still an issue to. For example, the MSI on max is equal to an Asus on half brightness, so it really strains the eyes since it's difficult to read.

    @dr.coool

You're right about that, but it's not like the 1080 can't handle games :p The Asus can handle nearly all games out on ultra, with the acception of Metro 2033 and Crysis.

how does the "in game" graphical display quality differ if i were to play in 1600x900 in a native FHD screen in near future for more demanding games??not talking about windows menus gettin blurred..who cares! :p

    another thing,here msi gx740 is -i5 and hd5870
    asus G73JW is-i7 and gtx 460m
in this case who do you think will perfrm better in games??

Ill tell u what 720P looks like on a 1366x768 screen using nvidia's scaler. For whatever reason its not "smooth" at 1280x720 in particular I get blocks, not blocky image. Quite literally you see distinguished blocks across the screen that remind you of 8x8 jpeg or mpeg artifacts. There bigger though not sure how big 24x24 or so. VERY weird.

I dont think all systems, scalers, games turn out this way. Its the first time I had ever seen the effect and its annoying.

Get the MSI, just look at the list of problems on the Asus in my sig - most apply to both the JH and JW. If you still want to purchase an Asus after that, then all i can say is good luck.

so you are basically stating that the MSI laptops comparably have lesser issues?
some people just say the exact opposite!i am at my wits end :p
    considering all facts with:
    screen quality n resolution
    gpu
    aftersales service
    reliability
    gaming performance
    build quality

who would you get into? msi gx740 or asus G73JW??remember i will be using it mainly for gaming :)

I was told my another user I associate with alot of the G51 users switched over to the MSI 660's. Screen wasn't epic in the BB G50 either but from what they describe it sounds pretty bad.

Why dont you talk to GenTechPC (User here from that site, names Ken) about his thoughts on the MSI. Or XoticPC people like Justin for example.

I honestly believe that MSI isn't worth it until you get something like a 660R, which has the best of everything. If you get a 740, you're asking for disappointment (b/c of the screen).

You should change your debate to 660R vs 73JW ...much more comparable than the 740 :p

specs wise both GX740 and 660R has the same gpu,
while 660r has a FHD 15"screen ;73JW and GX740 has 17" screens,so thought they would be comparable..other than resolution does the quality of display is better in a 660r?i mean how else is it better than gx740?? :)

Yup 660R is 1080, so the display is x1000 better than the 740. :)

Quality and resolution is better. 740 is granny/faded/low brightness. 660R on the other hand is not.

G73 is probably a better deal but there are also the potential problems that you'll have to deal with.

I say just pick one a deal with it. All laptops generally have some sort of problem that users complain about anyway. If you like the specs of the G73 go for it or if you like the MSI Laptops better pick one of them. I personally have purchased laptops from Asus since... well you see how long I have been here. As long as you take care of your equipment you should be good to go. I would (again mostly because I am bias towards Asus) go with the G73. :)

There is a difference between a minor complaint across the board and or a 10% failure rate... than with say a high percentage of major defects somewhere between hours and weeks into ownership.

I love my G50 and until the G53/73 issues started coming out I was putting alot of people into an ASUS that they were happy with.

Nice to see the votes going to the asus lol. If you get a good one, you might be happy.

Its the industry standard of failure for electronics of any type. 10% is deemed perfectly acceptable and normal.

While non of us are capable of getting the data to see where any particular model is at, or what the return rate over all is much less a particular store. By the RMA times, the number of people coming up with issues and the responses from ASUS. It would seem to be higher than it should be.

Even ASUS isn't in the position to see the immediate effect of returns but they have a pretty good picture. Much more people "went home" happy with say your G71 then are current with the G73/53.

there a point on which people have different views:
"gpu upgradability af asus rog machines"
some say its only upgradable by asus gpu.. ;)
some say its not upgradable at all.. :(
to clear the confusion can somebody say for sure about this issue on G73JW??

    r we underestimating gtx 460m?

    is the msi gx740/gx660r upgradable?
any underlying associated issues to be dealt with from then..like cooling, bios, etc?

There has been success in ASUS to ASUS Gpu transfers.

Mind you new chips can put the processor in a different location, so sometimes its straight foward sometimes youll need to fabricate a new cooling system. Once you cut a heatpipe its no longer vacum sealed.

The MXM standard and bios problems will come into play, but yeah its an open possibility.

No clue, seen a few sager swaps though. Under the same idea as ASUS it should be possible. But one of the things about the ASUS swap is, ASUS made the cards which are an upside down MCM card. I am not sure if they are making their own cards anymore heard something about pegatron having been spun off.

If MSI is using more or less standard cards and are not making them themselves this could change the possibilities. But I believe several of the machines they make do have replaceable cards. So it opens the door. Go ask the MSI forum about it.

They will only show up as their chip manufacturer as far as I know. Only in the vbios does it usually show any card manufacturer information.

ASUS buys the chips from nVidia and along with things like the reference design from their partner program with nvidia they make the cards themselves to fit their notebooks.

Short Answer yes you read me right.

    Long Answer:

At one point for desktops ATi made their own cards, then they went to only 3rd party manufacturers. Laptops have always been a different story of course. Motherboards are the same way Intel makes a chipset and either they or a partner like MSI makes a reference design which everyone bases theirs design from.

You wont need to expect a performance difference between two models of a gpu on the same bus with the same clock speed. Mind you if a chip supports more than one type of ram and the cards are offered with different ram then it could effect performance.

Anyways aside from OS, Other software and the cpu performance affecting the game or benchmark, one card is comparable to another between laptops no matter who made the card itself its an Nvidia card or its an ATi.

Notebookcheck is a good resource of getting a general idea, mind you dont forget the main listing includes dual gpu results which are around the top alot, you can filter out to single gpu only with a dropdown box option near the top.

I will agree to disagree on this. While it may appear that many more people went home happy with the G71\G72 models (mine was a warranty replacement for my G2) I would say more people went home happy with the G73 model. Why? Because at the release of the G73 more people had heard of Asus then at previous releases of G series laptops. If we could look at the sales trends for G73jh they were most likely phenomenal. You had to pre order g73's at most online stores including New Egg, and Best Buy was at many times sold out. More people own G73's then G71/G72 laptops. I have friends and co-workers i talked into getting G73's and all of them are happy. I am going to get off my high horse now and say this: the reason more people are having problems with the G73 is because more people bought them then other G series laptops. I don't think the problem rate is greater then "10%" it may be around 7 to 8%. Just my 2 cents.

I just can't recommend anything I do not have full confidence in, I feel partly responsible if something does go horribly wrong. I usually research my purchases out pretty far. Day after I got this i already had my list of what next pinned up. Ive never bought anything that ended in failure or that I was disappointed with unless it was something uber inexpensive. I consider myself very lucky on that however, every purchase even a good one is still a luck of the draw.

Nice to see they replaced your G2 though. ASUS has become a different company recently, nothing stays the same. ALLyourGroceries just sold his G73 i dont think he was having too many issues with it but he is the one that brought me up to date as of recent events along side me searching through the forums.

I too am one to do research. Most of the time I give benefit of doubt to many of my purchases though. I believe that if it is broken they will fix it. All the times i have thought this, it has happened. I have been reading all the threads about the G73 all versions and i am still impressed. I plan on getting the 3de model in a couple weeks. Maybe i will see the bad side of Asus after this purchase maybe not (fingers crossed). I am happy with Asus as said in earlier post. They replaced my G2 a month away from 2 years of ownership with a updated model at no expense to me. That carries a lot of weight with me. Anyway chose the model you can afford with the specs you want and be happy.

Im probably gonna have a 3d laptop before I have a 3dtv. I will tell u i was excited as hell when i put out about the 3d G51 replacement, like omg lol. Not on the priority list but it seems like by the time ivy bridge is out the market saturation of the feature will land me a model i want.

The G2 problems were nvidia like the G1's right? Unfortunately for alot of companies it wasn't there fault. Those kind of things happen. I have seen them replace laptops to satisfy the users waiting for their RMA.

Unfortunately it seems ever since ASUS had started planning to spin off its component manufacturing division into a separate company things have gone down hill on their end. The actual spin off only just happened so its hard to say how that is going.

ASUS will try to fix any problems that are going on and hopefully pull through in the end. There in it to make not lose money.

Do me a favor buy the G73, and lets see what happens :p

asus uses a reverse MXM connector (the connector is physically reversed) so you can only use ASUS's GPUs, and asus does not sell individual GPUs from what i understand.

unlike lets say, a sager or alienware, where they used standard MXM connectors and they can/might be able to interchange GPUs, and some work on flashing the bios. all in all, it's pretty tedious work from what i read.

there's a thread in the alienware m15x section discussing about inserting a sager GTX470m into the m15x with no success.

    This is just not true

Asus and msi will have cards made by other manufacturers in their laptops
Your 5870 should say msi right on it.

However both of these companies manufacture laptop gpus. So They get them at a discount or maybe they get paid in them.

There was a time when Asus made the mid range nvidia gpu, so they got to introduce that gpu in their own laptop.

I have a feeling msi got the same deal with the ati 5850 because they were the only laptop with one for a long time.

I do not believe Asus makes either the 5870 or the 460 gtx, I dont think they make any of the gpu cards discussed here in this thread, its the other way around msi does.

I cant tell you of the most recent events, but ASUS's Pegatron division which is as of 2010 a seperate company did make some of their cards. If they have contracted out the work it is no different than Any car manufacturer. Ford doesnt make very many parts at all in fact around 1% would be realistic. Even motorcraft parts are rebrands, say brake rotors are usually bought from bendix. So if ASUS has resorted to this to save money or prevent shortages it is an acceptable industry practice.

I havent seen anything past the 260M bios dumps but ASUS has used their ID's on the card bios. This is of course normal practice even if they didn't make the card themselves, its more of a sign that they did the coding from the reference bios than that they made anything.

I have to go look at the 260M real quick to see if its branded by ASUS. They are credited with making it along with 9800/9700M's however. BRB

Ya the biggest manufacturer of ati cards is a company named sapphire.

There was a time when asus made only the middle range and lower range nvidia gpus. They made all of them for all the manufacturrers in all the different sizes.

you can look at the two cards and see they aare obviouslty not made in the same place, they are different colors different heat sink etc.

Sapphire is my favorite ATI manufacturer. I currently love my Sapphire Vapor-X HD 5770 (factory overclocked)....I mean, look at the temps (XTreme burn, PostFX, 1680x1050)...

Wish it fit in my G73... ;)

In the case of the HD5870m in the G73 series, Asus designed their own card, and merely bought the GPU chips from ATI. It's part of the reason they had a GSOD issue. :)

I voted for the 660R. If it wasn't for my concerns I would be G73 all the way. I AM an Asus fan. I am just as open to MSI and Sager though. I had come up with the 660 series in recent searches on my own and according to ALLyourGroceries this is what some of the G51 owners went to. Heard great things looking around after i decided i had some interest in the series.

However I am probably gonna wait for ivy bridge and or nvidia getting their act together, if not whatever the latest ati is at that point.

You posted in an ASUS section so its obvious where the vote was gonna go. Had you posted in MSI it would have been different as well as if you posted it in What Notebook Should I Buy? forum .

The GX660R has nice specs and I would consider looking into that for a future notebook purchase.

But I voted for the Asus. Familiar company, good specs, 17" display, and I like the looks better than MSIs.

As for the other choice.... Core i5? not even in my vocabulary :)
