every time i restart my computer (windows updates and such) it pops up with Catalyst Control Centre: Host application has stopped working. any idea how to fix it?
also does anyone know by chance if the 5870 pops up in hwmonitor with updated graphics drivers?

I had that for a while. That was when I downloaded the 69.1mb Catalyst Control Center from AMD's support site.
Problem was, CCC kept showing my driver version as 10.6, and upon a reboot it would constantly crash with that 'host application has stopped working' error.
I googled for a direct link (72.4mb) of Cat 10.8 and installed that. Worked fine after that.
One of the links 10-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe
There are a few direct links around in a few different threads. -

thanks guys. got it working. my other question is is there anyway to downclock the gpu at idle other than messing with the power settings or switching to battery?
-
Here you are, the AMD GPU Clock Tool can help lower idle temps and increase battery life if used well
AMD GPU Clock Tool v0.9.26.0 For HD 5870 download from Guru3D.com -
I take it you are not on the new vBIOS? It downclocks to 405/1000 on idle.

thanks! thats actually what i was looking for. i must have had an older version as when i tried it originally it would fail to find a device. will keep using this as its what i used on my sager np8760
negative Chastity. ill probably just keep using the ati gpu clock tool as i downclock to 200/300 at idle. my temps right now are between 45 and 50C @ idle.
