    Hello everyone.

I am drooling all over the Mobility Radeon 5870 and am considering selling my G51VX to pay towards a new laptop.

Just stopping by the ASUS forums to see if this is a worthwhile upgrade, and if it is, I wanted to know how much bigger the G73JH is than the G51VX, which barely fits into my sleeve (laptop bag sleeve, that is, obviously).

So, does anyone have any pictures of the two laptops side-by-side? Any of the G51/G60 laptops will do, because they're all the same size (externally).

    Thanks.

The g1 is a bit smaller than the g50/g51. Edit:
    G1S: 32.4cm x 28.4cm x 3.74cm
    G50: 37.5cm x 26.5cm x 4.06cm
    G73: 42.0cm x 31.0cm x 5.68cm

Holy crap that's HUGE. Thanks for the instant reply though.

Dammit. The Alienware m15x is too expensive, the Sager np8690 is too loud, and now the ASUS G73 is too big. Whatever am I going to do?

EDIT: If the G51 is indeed bigger than the G1, then my heart just unbroke itself a little bit.

I was considering selling my g51vx-a1 for a g73jh as well. Hard decision to make because I've had no real issues with it. I wonder how much better is the g73 and is it worth it.
I might just end up keeping my g51 and waiting until next year. Hopefully asus will come out with a new stealth design with an 18.4" screen and 2 5870's in x-fire for a decent price.

What's the reason you need the G73JH to be smaller? Portability seems to differ in opinion greatly. For me G73JH is very portable, as I do it everyday. For others no so much.

How about you? What are you looking for? If you need something smaller, check out the GX640 with the HD5850. That's about as thin as a performance gaming notebook will get, I doubt you'll find anything thinner or lighter than that.

The GX740 17" is lighter and thinner also, but it's a 1 HDD, low resolution, 1 fan cooling notebook. But it is thinner and lighter.

To answer your portability question, I owned a Gateway P-6831FX before this ASUS, and it was huge. A bit too big for my liking (it barely fit in to my backpack). I'm not so concerned about the weight as I am about the volume.

Yes, I was considering the MSI laptops as well. But the GX740 is quite a bit more expensive for the same performance as the G73JH, and the GX640 comes with an i5-430M by default and the upgrade to anything else is at least another $300.

Sorry Forge, this G51VX is no longer top-of-the-line (of course, it never really was, but at least it was competitive). I'm having trouble with Just Cause 2 and Dirt 2 at max settings, and I hear Bad Company 2 is a bit heavy. I think I've squeezed as much performance as I possibly can out of it.

Don't worry though, it won't happen soon. I've just decided I'll probably wait till July or August when the 5870 laptops will hopefully become cheaper. Also, maybe NVIDIA will miraculously pull something out of their collective asses/arses and actually give ATI some competition in the mobile market (I love encoding video in minutes instead of hours).

My G51VX can then rest in peace, hopefully in someone else's caring hands, content in the knowledge that it has made at least one person very happy for 10 months.

Thanks for your help everyone; some of you should expect some rep coming your way, and an X9100 for sale in the Marketplace soon (too hot dammit), unless the P8800 is even hotter.

Well remember, the G73JH comes with it's own backpack. And at that point all you have to worry about is carrying a 10 lbs with G73 and Powerpack, personally I think it's very portable.

He does a lot of video encoding. The latest revisions of x264 are optimized greatly or multi-threading and an i7 720QM would be of HUGE benefit for him. And I mean HUGE. x264 will use 100% of all 8 threads if he sets it up right.

Likely a 30-40% difference, but that is indeed nothing to sneeze at.

I had a g51vx. That thing was solid - and the improvement won't be worth the additional cost. If you want to throw money around, you might as well get something more expensive and upgradable.

Also, just cause 2 doesn't run on full settings. It will, until the action gets heavy with several rocket-equipped enemies. I saw slowdowns twice, once on a takeover mission, once fighting baby panay with his 5x rocket launcher.

Actually the G73 weighs less than M15x which is 15 inch and 9lbs... anyways , can't go wrong with G73..
