Why am I having such difficulty with updating my 5870?? Every single driver update has been a real challenge and I only managed to get 10.7 on there by using a modified version that someone had uploaded. Below are some screen shots of the problems I'm experience with what should be a simple update:

    http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/944/atiupdater.jpg (attempted update to 10.9)
http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/6213/cccdm.jpg (what CCC says after I tried to update to 10.9)
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/9530/attempttoinstall109afte.jpg (after a complete uninstall with safe mode drive sweeper I run the 10.9 and this is what I get... whyyyyyyy?!)

I have tried uninstalling, using driver sweeper (in safemode) and then a fresh install but for some reason it doesn't even detect that I have the card when I do that and I have to put the stock drivers back on. I'm using ASUS G73JH if that is of any help to anyone.

    *edit*

Just in case anyone asks, I am running the 10.9 installer downloaded from Downloads
    Windows 7 64 bit

I'm also looking into the possibly of using steam to auto-update the drivers and see if this fixes the problems I've been experiencing.

I'm attempting the 10.8 mobility drivers atm which I have done in the past with no luck. I'll take screen shots if things don't go to plan in case it helps.

You should have much better luck using the correct mobility driver instead of the desktop driver.

And make sure you choose download option 1!

screw the screen shots, it's easier just to state that with the mobility "10-8_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_enu" I get the following options:
    cata installer
    LotR
    HDMI
    C++
    Comm's opt in

    No driver!

This is the case for every install attempt I've tried aside from the stock release from asus. I have the new vbios installed if that will make any difference?

that option 1 doesn't work for me. I have no idea why? I've tried it on 3 separate connections (work, home, and parents) and everytime it brings up the place to save it then says something like download failed. I'll do it now so i can quote it.

    click start download
select folder on desktop to save to and click save
0.1 seconds later "ATI catalyst mobility download is canceled"
click ok on that and nothing more happens
no firewall enabled, no proxy connection, nothing!?

If it's possible could you please step me through the process as I'm completely stumped here and must be missing something obvious as no one else seems to be effected by this.

    1: uninstall everything ATI
2: safe mode drive sweeper all ATI
    3: restart normal - install mobility 10.8
this is where it comes undone for me as no drivers appear for me to install

Am i missing something here? Oh i've also tried to manually update them via device manager with no luck as it continually states that the generic driver > the mobility driver >_>

You're not missing anything but something with your system is breaking or not allowing the download. I thought maybe AMD site was down temporarily but I just downloaded it successfully no problem.

I'm uploading the install package to my server right now so if you don't get it before my upload completes, you can get it from my server. I'll post the URL here when it's done...

You're a legend! Though this is only a temporary fix (as I'd rather not come begging here every update). I've tried googling the error message I recieve but no luck yet. This has been happening to me since 10.1 and I did try to find a solution then too but gave up as the vbios wasn't stable until the update recently.

I have the same exact issue. I spent Saturday installing and uninstalling ATI drivers. Nothing worked accept reverting to the ones on the disk. When I installed 10.8 and tried to run Catalyst it said that the device was not recognized... and like the OP it appeared that the ATI "driver" was just a load of crapware with no driver.

Currently I can not run the following games from:

Altitude (Steam- weird because it is low graphic game)
    Amnesia (Steam)
    Starcraft 2 (very random crashes)

Everything else works fine, I really like the laptop.

now why is it that yours is working for me and all from amd's ati mobility site are not!? I'm relieved but still rather confused. Thank you all so much for your help! I'll have to continue trying to get to the bottom of why I can't download the file via the app.

If the device is not recognized, that's usually a good indication you're trying to install the wrong driver (e.g. the desktop driver instead of the proper mobility driver or a version for a different GPU).

If the driver is not in the installation package you're using, then maybe you chose the CCC-only installer instead of the complete package.

I have no clue on that one! Only guess is that some anti-malware software is preventing it...

Sadly that's ruled out as I even attempted it in safe-mode with networking and still it failed =\ got me beat for now. If the planet align and I discover the reason for this happening I'll be sure to post it just in case there are others with a similar issue.

    It worked.... I'll be damned.

I think that the ATI driver from the site was/is borked. It was not installing the driver after multiple tries. At one point I did try downloading from another source (forget where) and I was having the same issues.

    THANKS!

(also appears that the games that were not working are working now!)

I ran into this craziness once, and fixed it by doing an uninstall, a sweep, and installed Asus' 10.1 package, then upgraded to current.
