    hey, so i bought my g73 back in march and its been great with this one exception. Whenever i try to play starcraft 2 on the highest settings, it gives great frame rate but when i move the screen, there is a delay each time. if i turn the settings down, this delay is gone.
    Also, sometimes when i play starcraft 2, my g73 just turns off without any warning. all the lights turn off at once, no minimizing of sc2 or shutting down screen either.
    i have since turned all the settings to default and have had no problems. I have not updated any of the drivers since my machine arrived as well because i have heard bad stories about people who mess around with the updates.

    anyone got a fix for these problems?

    thanks

    Your G73 is shutting down because your GPU got overheated. There is a built in thermal protection that forces your machine to shut down when temps reach above 114C. SC2, Crysis and GTA IV are some examples of games that push the machine to its limits.

    Solutions:

    Are you running the updated version of SC2 with the latest patch? If its already patched, then the heating issue is with your machine. Get HWinfo and monitor your GPU temps at 5 min intervals and post the temps here.

    You likely have 4 options:

    1. Reinstall the stock 9.12 / 10.1 drivers from Asus, turn the details down and play the game (though this is not really a solution, more of a peacemeal thing).

    2. Put a shunt or wooden chip to prop up the back of the laptop by about 1.2 inches, to create better airflow (also not really a solution) or get a laptop cooler.

    3. Open up this bad boy, reapply thermal paste to both the GPU and the CPU, preferably with IC Diamond 7, or get a trusted service center to do it.

    4. RMA your unit and hope that the replacement you get has a better thermal pasting job than your current one.

    It is a known issue that Asus did a poor job of applying (poor quality) thermal paste on the G73 units, many users right here in this forum are or have suffered from it........should've done your research before you bought your ($1600) laptop I guess.

    Goodluck!

    One quick fix besides the others mentioned might be to add the following to Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt:
    frameratecap=60
    frameratecapglue=30

    my current quick fix to this problem is some weird rack that elevates the whole laptop about 1/2 inch with really good airflow.

    I would like to get something more reliable though. What are some good durable laptop coolers to look at?

    I'm surprised at the number of G73 SC2 issues. I'm running stock vibes and 10.6 with slight OC to 705/1100 and the game plays perfectly at 1080p all settings on high.

    I've played through the entire campaign and countless hours of multiplayer and never had a hang or crash. I do have cooler but have played w/o it.

    Cheers

    I'm with stock vBios, 10.1 from asus website and played SC2 1.0.2 and almost everything in ultra at 1080p and game runs fantastic. Only once I have a shutdown 'cuz overheat, But I was in a place were hot.

    According to Ex3beatnik's Profile

    Location: Antarctica :err:

    Also, while a Cooler may alleviate the problem, it will by no means eliminate it.
    So if I were you, I'd be looking for a repaste, or an RMA.

    Were these known issues back in March? I don't think so.

    RMA= return material authorization.

    You buy something that isnt working as intended and ask to get it fixed without any costs charged. The seller issues an "RMA number" allowing you to send it in.

    It certainly wasn't as widespread as it is right now, but yes heat was an issue even back then. I was aware of certain units failing because of overheating, even in March, though repasting wasn't considered at that time. You can have a look at the GPU benchmarking thread (and the corresponding dates on the post).

    nuff said.

    RMA = other word for using Warranty :)
    I would also do the warranty way.
