I was looking to buy an asus laptop, preferably 15 inch, and I heard some of the laptops have a gimped graphics card ( 128 bit ). If anyone can tell me which models to avoid, I'd highly appreciate it!

Simple. Avoid anything from Best Buy, then you're good.

Gimped graphics card doesn't mean its not a great gamer. The regular GTX 560M has 192bit memory bandwidth, so by default the minimum amount of VRAM it can carry is 1.5GB. The Newegg version of G74SX has 3GB of VRAM, which is twice the size of the 1.5GB.

Your G74SX features a 128bit GTX560M, which is "gimped". Since it has 128bit memory lanes, the minimum amount of VRAM it carries is 1GB. 2GB is twice of that. The "gimped" version of GTX560M is on average 5~10% slower than the original version of GTX560M.

so i herd. every 8 months or so computers change, so what may be "top of the line" now will be old in 8 months or so. we can never keep up.

most graphics cards are gimped 128bit.

faster ones are paired with gddr5.

    My 2010 5870 can best your 560 :D
That isnt entirely true; only those that are meant to have a wider width then 128 and then are brought down to that level, can you say are/is gimped. The 5870 for example comes with 128 standard.

But the 5870 was top end at the time, while GTX 460m / 560m were mid-grade cards to start.

In any case, it's primarily about bandwidth. Usually you can get fast clocked GDDR3 that can compete with lower clocked GDDR5, and a fast GPU on a 128-bit bus width compared with lower clock on 192-bit.

In any case, gimped to me is something that can't play current gen games at reasonable framerates (i.e. > 30fps).

How so? Bad Company 2 is about one of the most aggressive online FPS's out there and can run at about 50fps with medium detail on a $450 laptop. Not too shabby.

Huh? What does that have to do with anything? lol Ill be honest, I am starting to forget the point I was trying to make, though it wasnt that; just that ASUS went from mid-high with the 260, to high-end with the 5870, then relatively back down with 460/560

So far ALL the G53-SX models are (128 bit) or crippled

    560m (192 Bit)
    G74SX-A1
    G74SX-A2
    G74SX-XA1
    G74SX-3DE
    G74SX-XT1

    560m (128 bit)
    G53SX-A1
    G53SX-XT1
    G74SX-BBK7

Heres a list ive come up with, if you want the best 560m then pick a model with the (192 bit). The (128 bit) models are still OK for some gaming but they will be roughly 10% slower then the full 560m model.

That is on subject, discussing Asus GPU's.

    In any case define "crippled".

Tricky one. I would define it similiar to a busted horse without the horse being shot.

Asus get the GPU, customise it to prevent plod being able to upgrade it although failing miserably. When plank is modifying it he conducts the mod similiar to how he would conduct a repaste, terribly. This then results in a partially damaged card.

''Darren'' ''Yes idiot tech'?'' ''I busted another card''

''Sigh, chop off some Vram and give it to Tim to change the bus width then call Duncan from BB and tell him we have a pile of battered GPU's which we will stick in some cheap G series and send em over for them to sell off for cheap''

    ''Will do!''

Similiar to the busted horse without shooting the poor fellow he just chops off one of his legs which leaves you with a complete failure watching a horse try and stand up with only 3 legs and again similiar to how the 460M 128bit version performs.

    Aka a 'crippled' GPU. :)

LOL! Yeah Crippled, Gimped, halfazzed what ever you want to call it the 128bit version WILL perform worse than the 192 bit version.

Depends on what the GPU clock speed and VRAM speed is.
