i have a gateway p7805u and was unable to install xp due to locked bios. was wondering if asus g73 has an open bios to install xp thx, vynle
-
Why would you want to do that? Win 7 does have backwards compatibility.
-
I don't know about XP but I was able to install ubuntu 10.10 with no problems on my g73.

XP on a G73 = Blasphemy
-
It can be done, but it will take more work than it's worth honestly.
-
That's like installing a 2L, 120hp engine into a Enzo Ferrari Enzo body!
-
Please remeber in order to use 4gb of ram or more you need a 64bit OS.
So if you go with XP use the 64bit version...
but for gaming this is not a good idea.. but to each there own -
You can set the SATA mode to IDE in the BIOS to install XP.
To install XP on a machine which does not let you change your SATA mode in the BIOS, or to use the ACHI SATA mode, you need to use nlite to slipstream the iaStor.inf SATA driver into your XP installation. This is located on the drivers CD.
Most of the XP drivers are on the drivers CD, apart from Power4Gear and the LAN, bluetooth, audio, and wifi drivers.
I am running a dual boot system with XP and Windows 7, since my $3,000 Blackhawk DSP emulator is not compatible with Windows 7 (or XP mode), since TI integrated the drivers into the new version of Code Composer Studio, to force people to upgrade for $3,595!!!! -
Why would you install XP on it? Windows 7 is pretty fantastic, no real reason NOT to upgrade.
-
Well, there are some specific software does not really run well on 7 or Vista.
I think Geostudios have issues with 7 too. Meh.
Compatibility problem with this kind of software is far worse than what you can imagine. -
Can I install Windows 98 on the G73?
-
I would hand in my geek card and apply for my uber-geek credentials.
-
I did dual-boot XP 32-bit on my G3 but I had a hard time finding and installing drivers for it. I did find some but they didn't work. I couldn't even use ethernet and wifi on XP. All this to print from a 7 year old Canon printer with XP drivers only and that didn't work as well

Chastity has the better answer than us all...
Uber-Geek in the room for sure..... -

Uber Geek? that is a feature that MS has been pushing since a year before 7 came out. The G73 doesnt come with it though.
You can always use VM, VM is for the real geeks. -
I have three virtual machines. The XP VM is the one I use daily as a member of a Windows Domain. I have a Linux VM that I tinker with a lot but not every day. Finally I have a VM that I shouldn't have because Steve Jobs would be very angry and I think he is stalking me so I can't talk about it too much.
I have found that the VMPlayer works just fine and it is free. I believe it will even create new virtual machines. In the old days before MS and Sun started giving it away, VMWare Player would only run an already created virtual machine. The competition has caused some of the features of VMWare Workstation to be implemented in the player. I guess for a non-corporate user, all you really need these days is the player. They even have virtual machines you can download and run without having to create your own for several versions of Linux if that is your thing. -
ironically.. you can kill me if you like.
I have windows XP and 2000 installed on my G73JH.
windows 98 just is silly, though i was able to get it to install, it was unstable as hell.
XP however, is quite fast, as is windows 2000.
finding drivers for everything however... was not fast.
Most of the G73jh drivers have a 'xp/2k' folder in their installers, you just have to manually update the driver to that one. otherwise the installer cries because it's expecting windows 7.
I only have 2000 installed because i use some ancient proprietry software for work, that even windows xp can't emulate. (the software dates back to 1995 btw) 16bit ftw!
windows 2k server does see all 8 threads, which is just amazing, as does xp pro. i haven't installed 64bit xp btw, just the 32bit. windows 2k/xp see 2.9GB of my 16GB, but i'm only in those modes for things which really don't need the space.
You HAVE to slipstream the AHCI driver into the cd install for both OS's or use a usb floppy drive if you still have one.
windows 2k still thinks i have a 1.8GB drive, but i don't use it outside of it's partition so it won't kill the other partitions lol.
you need to upgrade win xp to SP2 at least to use both 500GB drives, until i ran windows update it only saw one.
(yes i have sata mode for both os working!)
the ATK package even works in both 2k and xp. so i have lighty up keyboard in software made before that was even conceived lol.
BT was an absolute git to install, because you need to update the MS stack before upgrading it to the asus one.
feel free to call me what you like lol -
Seriously though, I've been partially wanting to nuke Windows 7 off this laptop on chuck XP on, purely because I prefer it. But if it really has all these damn issues with modern computers, then I can't really be bothered with it. I don't have the time for it.
BTW, Windows 2000 on G73 = Total glorious win. I want a legal copy of Windows 2000 just so I can put it on the old IBM Aptiva and use it for nostalgia purposes. -
oh, xp is quite stable on the g73, it just took time getting the right drivers for it.
the whole install process, took me about.. hmm 3 hours? for both OS's
win2k uses like 109MB of ram lol -
ok, you struck my curiosity..how can i get all the drivers for xp?
-
ok,
i wasn't going to actually bother doing a tutorial for windows XP on the g73, because i didn't think people were crazy like me!.
but if you like i can do one, with driver help.
Let me know, I'll dig out my XP discs >.> lol -
-
i didn't get driver discs either sadly, but i will do a tutorial tomorrow. - i'll install xp and xp64 - so people can choose.
watch this space!
do not ask me for a windows 2000 tutorial... ever lol
i won't use slipstream, i'll do the tutorial to enable ahci in xp after the installation - it works fine on my old girl - now where did i put that spare laptop HDD... -
yeah, i just need the drivers.
lan
wifi
and a few others.
getting ready to do another install of xp right now. -
heretics!!! xD
-
well. got tired of waiting for someone to do this. so i went and found the drivers today. took me all of 1 hour to do. now i have a fully functional windows xp professional copy on my g73jh
-
-
1:benching os
2:trouble shooting all my clients with windows xp systems.
3: because i can
4: because it's faster than in virtual pc
5: did i mention..because i can -
Install virtualization software. Havn't met software I can't virtualize just as well as if it was runnning native on the g73.
-
because i can name like 100 games that will not work with it. for starters.

Hi! I’m also very interested in the installation of "XP" on the G73jh, even if I like and I think that 7 is a good OS. It’s a purpose of compatibility with old games and softwares.
I already did the installation of XP successfully on the G73jh long time ago with all drivers except for the video card.
So please can you tell me how did you do to install the HD5870m driver. Thanks. -
the video card was the easiest one..
do you have any xp mobile vga drivers at all? -
I think you can, don't see any reason why not, but then you will have a lot of trouble trying to find all the drivers
-
-
Until hd4xxxm I was using ”mobility modder” from hardwareHEAVEN, but now…
So please, how did you do to install hd5870m driver? -
download a copy from amd for the desktop cards for the time being.
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/10-10_xp32_dd_ccc_ocl.exe
do the initial install
when it crys about no cards found..then just end it there.
what your going to do is alter the inf file to include your card.
then you'll do a have disk method and the driver will install. -
Can you give me more details about “what your going to do is alter the inf file to include your card.” Cause I didn’t do it before. Thanks.
-
it's not going to mean anything if you havent gotten to the part i have indicated.
when it's said and done..your going to add one word (mobility) and change 5800 to (5870) and last change 6899 to (68a0)
click save. then do have disk method and install driver. -
Ok, thanks, I'll give it a try tomorrow when I will have time.
I think I can handle this, but if you have time and the patience to do a screen shot or a copy and paste of this part of the file, I will be grateful to you for it! -
here, just download these.
Download ATI Catalyst 10.10 Software Suite WinXP 32-bit | techPowerUp
-
Would it be possible post the xp drivers somewhere for download?
-
Many Intel processors before 64bit came out, especially the server ones, were 36bit, 32 bit for addressing up to 4GB of memory, and 4 bits for RAM pages,(you can represent 0-15 therefore 16 numbers using 4 bits or 2^4 numbers) so you cold have up to 64 GB of addressable RAM space, on a 32 bit operating system. -
edit:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/xzbl6f5flc8vzr2/xpdrivers2.zip
to install the video drivers...you will install like normal, then come back around and do...have disk method. this is just to install the driver itself and not ccc and all the other stuff. the gpu string is already altered to show your gpu. -
johnksss said: ↑rorage said: ↑since you clearly dont know what your talking about.
taken from here
Configure PAE
PAE affects virtual memory, not physical memory.
Each process is (in a 32 bit client OS) assigned a 4gB virtual address space with 2gB reserved for kernel stuff and 2gb reserved for user stuff.
The PAE switch changes this so that 1gB is reserved for kernel stuff and 3gB are reserved for user stuff (if the application is PAE aware - if not it doesn't do anything)
Virtual memory is 4gB for each process running on your system. So if you've got 50 processes running, you've got 200gB of virtual memory address space. But, you've only got 4gB of RAM, so the Windows Memory Manager swaps the used portions of the virtual memory from the pagefile to the physical RAM as it's needed.
Now, the physical memory is able to recognize anything up to 4gB of physical (not virtual) memory (again, this applies to 32 bit client OS's). When the system loads, it reserves spaces in that 4gB space for hardware devices (mostly it's for video cards). So that space is not available for the physical memory to use - so that's why there's less than 4gB available. In order to free up that memory address space you'll have to remove the hardware - and removing the video card will free it up, but then you won't be able to see anything! :0)
so "roll on floor laughing" and get a clue first.
sure like to see you use more than 6.7 gigs (out of 8 gb) (let alone all of it)of ram in your computer. which i dont see happening, because we tested that as well.
the only os to use all the ram is linux. never tried on a mac.
so get a clue.Click to expand...
it's not rare at all, and yes you can use more than 4 GB of ram on a 32 bit processors on a 32 bit OS
how does your screeshots prove me wrong? you can address more than 4GB of RAM o a 32 bit processor on a 32 bit OS, I didn't claim that all Oses do that
and if you would have went to microsofts site you would have read that XP and Vista don't support more than 4 GB of RAM, even if they support PAE (you must be in PAE mode to have NX support) and I can give you another page behind the reasons they don't support it, on the other hand Windows Server editions do support it.
Either you can't read or were born pathologically stubborn .Click to expand... -

HAHA, did I ever specified Windows? <---it was pretty obvious we were talking about windows.
it's not rare at all, and yes you can use more than 4 GB of ram on a 32 bit processors on a 32 bit OS <-- no it can't (meaning all of the 4gb of ram installed in that machine - not talking about adding 4 more gigs to make 8 gb of ram)

so go do that and report back. and if you can use all 8 gb in a server. cool...if not. give it a rest alreadyClick to expand... -

Also a server is a PC, just the function is different
I didn't claim that all OSES use 4gb of ram, a 32 bit OS can access 4GB of RAM, that doesn't mean that all id available for an application.

the whole this was about "what the os can use" not "how much it can address"
i know it can address more, that was a given. but what it can actually use of available installed ram, will never be "all" not as far as microsoft is concerned.
sure, i checked your links, but it had nothing to do with "using all of installed ram" this is a big on going thing until people go and put it to the test on their machines. and then...do they realize just how much ram they can actually use.
i see we were talking about two different things.
i was talking about what you can use
you were talking about what can be addressed.Click to expand...
