    agreed
sure. xp can address above that, but do you really want to chance data corruption. i was getting that trying to use 3.4 out of 4gb, but was fine with 3.2 to 3.3 out of 4gb.

    edit:
just checked my xp and it's only 2.93 usable as well..due to the video card mainly...

yea, having a real life sucks sometimes. glad you found the drivers. i was gonna post em up today, but see you have them already.

I was at a conference, and didn't take my g73 cos it's a massive hunk of unprofessional plastic. the elitebook went instead, hence why i didn't have chance to get my drivers off.

The only thing i had issues with in XP was the bluetooth stack driver.

do you know that win xp doesn´t differentiate between real cores and HT virtual cores?

you can run an app that uses 2 cores, and XP use core1+HTcore1 with a big loss in performance...

Fair point... some of those games don't work properly under virtualization. But some (like AoE) do. The OTHER side of this, is that most will run just fine in windows 7 OR under virtualization.

So. Explain to me what your problem is again?

    What's your problem?

ok, i'm just finalising it atm, with screen shots for the ultimately nooby. I'll put it in a new thread so we can ensure people pay attention.

Thanks for letting me use the drivers :)

Thank you all for your posts on this, it made setting up the dual boot very easy. I have only run into one remaining roadblock. That would be the VGA adapter. I have the Nvidia 460m display adapter but cannot get it to install with any driver package I've found thus far.

I get the typical "you do not have the hardware to support this driver" message on any attempt with the Nvidia official drivers, just wondering if someone was able to find out something I missed.

    Thanks

check nvidia for a newer version of the file or do a search on modding the inf file. someone would have already done it or try the have disk method.

Hey - I just wanna say a big THANKS!!

especially to johnksss & Siorah ~

    ".....because I CAN..." ........ EXACTLY !!

I just got my G73JW on Friday, & just dL your drivers,
and will be busy with it this week :)

and yes, I already have lean/mean VMs of each OS created,
to run within each booted OS - including that one inspired by Mr.Jobs ;) ;)

but why not play around w/ the new Ferrari -
maybe it'll be a blast taking grandma to the grocery store ?? (running xp) ;)

also, if anyone is willing to help me if i run into difficulties,
i'd greatly appreciate it - and will return the favor by making a nice tutorial,
complete w/ screen-caps (may-be the other peeps haven't had the time?)

... it's just too funny-pathetic that people get upset over the creative freedom of others -
the only other subject that might just outdo this kind of idiotic intolerance
(typically male) can be found on any golf forum :p

I have been trying to install XP as a secondary boot option on my son's G73 and running into problems. The installer quits and gives me the following message:

" A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer."

I thought it looked as if it may be a hard drive related problem. An earlier post in this thread mentioned the use of nLite to slipstream the iaStor.inf SATA driver into the XP installation. I did try it and got the same results. This may have something to do with my experience level being closer to technopeasant than geek. I am also wondering if this glitch could be related to the chipset drivers. I do hope one of the promised tutorials gets produced and posted, it is highly likely to solve all my problems. But in the meantime I am willing to accept any suggestions.

I have downloaded the drivers posted by johnksss, thank you, but I am not sure whether they are 32 or 64 bit. I am trying to install a 64 bit XP to the G73.

Hate to resurrect a most certainly dead thread, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding Siorah's tutorial on how to install XP for newbs on the g73. Did it ever get made, or was it deleted, or?

Edit: To be clear, I need to install XP64bit, which I have the disc for. Just not sure exactly what steps are to be taken.

    Thanks!

Install, update to SP3, let Windows Update do it's thing, then have fun finding the drivers for items not auto installed in Device Manager.

Awesome. Thanks for the feedback. Downloading them now.

If for some reason I run into problems with these drivers, is there any other place to look? Asus website seems sorely unhelpful.

I tried PM'ing Siorah to see if he had his tutorial lying about somewhere, or whether he had installed XP64bit when he did his build, but the forum doesn't seem to want me to be able to PM. Maybe I have to make a couple of posts first or something.

    Thanks again!

Unfortunately Virtual PC won't work for me. Like some previous posters, proprietary software that just hasn't been updated and for some reason exists in some gray area where it doesn't work in Virtual =/

I could be looking at it incorrectly, but I do not see any 64bit driverpacks for XP, only 32bit. Oh well.

I haven't tried to make the switch yet as it's crunch time at the moment and I've just been looking in my offtime for solutions. All these comments are definitely appreciated and being bookmarked / printed out for use in the immediate future. I'm crossing my fingers that someone will come across this and say "oh, yeah, I've done that exact process. Do this ____"

Finding drivers for xp x64 is incredibly painful, even on mainstream hardware from the time it was released. It is one of the worst supported OSes in history. If you make any progress make sure to post.

P.S. you need 5 posts to be able to PM.

ok dudes, I am in like some of you :D
Installed my SP3 pro xp on my second HD, now I am collecting drivers here and there, specially with driver max/driver easy.

I got the driver he posted, but not everything worked, I mean, there are 3 audio packages here, but I could not instal the Audio-bus.zip packages, althrough it seems a self updater exe only, am I wrong?

Then honestly, I got intel CPU drivers from the website, gonna get the wireless one from there as well, getting my own CCC right now...
    next gonna be mouse, headset.
Assuming the audio ones were done correctly and the ethernet is up as well,

Do I need anything else? (keyboard light/fn keys maybe...)

And are there any tweak I need to know about the ram usage/allocation?

I menaged to re do the intallation, this time with a 64bit version of the os, getting some of the drivers really was a pain...

Now I am wondering about some points:

Is XP suitable to be run over an SSD or is better leaving it on a HDD?

Also, Is anyone being able to use the ATK pack for the backlight keyboard? it does not work to me even if key function works...

I also could not find any ATI Catalyst version for XP 64bit, nor that I miss it, but I also miss the HDMI drivers, besides, I may be able to get them with driver max... nobody knows about a 64bit xp catalyst anyway?

    TURBO BOOST DRIVER:
are they integrated in the chipset driver or what? because when installing SEVEN, I know there is a little file on the STOCK CD Driver that install the monitor resource (and the driver too?)

XP doesn't support TRIM for SSD's, so not a good OS for a SSD system.

XP 64 bit edition is garbage. Many vendors, driver creators, etc don't even support it, and there's a lot of compatibility issues for applications. If running XP on the G73, I HIGHLY suggest running 32 bit edition.

Yes, you will not be able to use more than 4GB of RAM (or in reality much less than that even), but at least you will be running the most compatible version of XP.

When it comes to XP, I'd steer clear of 64 bit altogether.

And to throw a bit more gas on the fire, even 32 bit Microsoft server OSes are limited by the 4GB memory addressing limit which is why 32 bit Microsoft Exchange 2003 servers would eventually crash if they had too many mailboxes/mail users on them. It's also the reason that starting with Microsoft Exchange 2007, there's no longer a 32 bit server option. It all comes down to the maximum memory that a 32bit operating system can use. I really don't know how even Linux/Unix would get around that limitation since it's really a hard limitation to 32 bit architecture. Yes, I understand /PAE and /4GB switches for 32 bit server OSes and editing the boot.ini for that, but again, the limit is an architectural limitation and anything else is just a hack to allow addressing beyond the normal 32 bit limits. As a Windows engineer for the last 15 years, I have plenty of experience with the issue.

So far I have no issue with the 64bit thing, I would consider it, anyway it runs steam and mumble + some other program I use with no issue so far, thus for now I'm gonna stick with it.

So, no TRIM support eh, that's a bad deal, yeah, what's the faster Hard drive that a g73 can use then?

mmm thanks, I am wondering if it would be a worthy update, since I know how it should work, I dubt it can actually cut the loading times of games when the game size are far larger than 4 gbs...

    :7

wanna google if there is nothing similar to trim for ssd...

You can use an SSD, you just need to run some sort of wiper program/garbage collection program. No built-in TRIM, doesn't mean it can't *be* done.

yeah I just talked with some friend and they told me about that, since they have SSD raids which are just like this face ->

So yeah, I wonder where can I buy the cheapest 256 gb one with best performance (probably still a c300 or an OCZ vertex 2?) suggestion are welcomed...
Even if probably I will ends up partitioning mine...
