But the bios-file in c:\. Then reboot, go in to the bios and use the biosflash tool there.

If you want to keep a newer bios, I found out that Asus has also released bios number 213. I couldn't find it at Asus site though, but this german site has it http://www.asustreiber.de

That bios cured my Vista backlight problems :)

Is it possible to upgrade our laptop's CPU to the latest Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 Processor 2.40GHz FSB800MHz 4 MB? We will probably need to upgrade the rams up to 800 MHz also...which I believe hasn’t hit the market yet.

Nope. Max is T7600, which uses the same socket as ours. The new Santa Rosa Meroms have a different one.

Stamar, I'm curious about your LCD panel swap, have you done it yet? I bought my A8Js while in Dubai 3 months ago, and I bought it without checking the quality of the screen, had no idea it could be that bad... Its AUO... I haven't used the laptop much because of this screen. But if I can swap it out, that would be great. Keep us updated, please.

I'm looking into an A8M for a friend. Anyone here knows if it suffers from the bad hinges problem? Or any other info on the model?

I think it was mostly early A8's that had the hinge problem. But why an A8? Unless it's cheap, there's better options.

It's the only cheap 14" laptop I was able to find from a brand I know (that is as cheap as 600 EUR).

I'm not sure how old this A8 is, nor do I know the AMD CPU lines to infer the age from the CPU model number.

But it has Vista so it can't be that old.

Yeah, ok it's the best in that pricerange. As you were...

Napa refresh (C2D) models came with both xp and vista, so this should be around the same time. I don't think it has the same hinge problems as the A8Jm, but i can't know for sure.

I just bought a Samsung external monitor and connected it to my a8js. In certain situations like when I'm gaming or on websites with certain colors, I can see horizontal flickering lines. It's also happened on a Viewsonic lcd so it's my computer that's doing it. Could it be that the VGA connection cannot refresh the high res monitor (1440x900) fast enough? Or something about the 7700 makes it not play nice with external monitors?

Hi y'all, had a quick question about the A8Js.

I recently purchased a 2 x 1.0 GB pack of memory from G.Skill off of NewEgg.

Now I stuck them into my laptop (after pulling out my original stick) and booted up.

Bios recognized the 2 GB instantly. I was happy.

But then, the computer froze, blue screened, and rebooted.

The ram, when I touched it, was burning hot. I believe it may have overheated.

My friend recommended changing the memory voltage through Bios.

Couldn't find this anywhere. Any help?

I'm not quite sure what "hinge problem" you are talking about (there may be more than one?) But with my A8Js (manufactured in April 2007) I had the left hinge start making a "creaking" noise in addition to the lid on the same side split from the LCD bezel and crack. I read about it happening to other A8Js owners here but I sent my laptop in to Asus and they were able to fix it with a (supposedly newer) part.

Anyone know if there is a way to make it so the button for activating BT (since we all know that the A8JM really doesn't have BT) can open the impossible to open CD tray? If you are not sure which keys I'm talking about it's not the F keys but the ones right below the power button (performance - bluetooth - WIFI - Screen Mode - InstantFun).

    Thanks!

opps..throught this was the A8JM...sorry about that

It will downclock to 667MHz. The Santa Rosa generation can't run memory at 800MHz either.

hey guys, i have an asus a8js and was wondering if there have been any new video card driver releases lately by either asus or nvidia. i went to nvidia's site and i found nothing. plus is there any way, to check wht driver version you have???

i say this, because i have noticed a lot of abrupt freezing in games such as madden 08, and was wondering whether my video drivers are corrupted, or whether they are simply outdated? thx.

It could be your drivers, but I doubt it. I don't play sports games so I don't know the requirements for it. But, you could try toning down the gfx to see if that fixes it. I haven't updated my drivers yet, but then again I don't play much games these days. I forgot, isn't there a site to get new drivers that isn't associated with nvida, omega something...

go to www.laptopvideo2go.com. They have the latest drivers. I'm using 169.04. And you have to visit the forums to get the latest drivers. However, their site is down at the moment.

My idle is 52-55C. With NHC (som my fan is slower, more silent and less effective).

Try Undeclocking. Are you using any fan control applications?

Hmm, the default settings for the are quite high, so it should be quite cool. How loud is the fan? Is it louder now that you have Vista 64-bit?

Does Oblivion Count? I think it's in the mid 70's. Overclocked.

yeh oblivion does count (coincidence though i waz playin shivering isles just a min back) fan aint dat loud.....i can barely hear it......its just dat the temps are too high

although i can hear the fan a little when im gaming

by the way......did u try running crysis?
and what speeds do you overclock to?

    I haven't tried crysis (and I'm not gonna). I have OC'd to c:500/m:450.

If you don't hear the fan, it's not spinning fast enough, meaning the temps will be higher. Unfortuantly, I don't know any fan control programs that work with vista64

Because different Cards OC differently. Although, yours SHOULD be like mine-ish, but your fans seem to work less efficently. Those with memory clocks above 500MHz are the ones with the fist batch of A8js (like stamar).

You need to disconnect it, remove the battery, and open the hatch where the ram is. There you disconnect the Fans power cord, then use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the fan. Then clean it. Don't use the water though. If you can, spray compressed air in the fan exhaust. Then you'll get then dust stuck there as well.

I'm considering purchasing the A8JS off NewEgg for $1,149. Are there any glaring issues that have come up since its release and use over the past year or so? I saw some mention of LCD problems, but the specs still seem to be impressive for the price. I would actually be going a little over budget for this laptop. Is it still a worthwhile buy or are there other models I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance! This site has been a wealth of knowledge.

The LCD's have bad vertical viewing angles. The AUO panel has generally more backlight bleed and graininess than the CMO.

Hinges have started to give away (mine started a week ago, but I HAVE abused them).

Internal speakers are the worst I've ever heard.

It's still fast though. GPU performance is in line with a 8600M GS, and CPU in line with T7300. Build is ok. Battery life depends on if you're lucky with the battery. Mine can reach 3 hours. Size and weight are good, though it is a bit heavy for a 14".

I know that HP 8510p is available for $1400-ish and that the baseline T61p starts at $1100 in the US, both more powerful and MUCH better built. But bigger and heavier.

Thanks for the response! I'm not sure if I fully understand the screen thing, though. Is there a way to tell if it comes with an AUO or CMO screen, or does it come with the AUO and the CMO is a replacement you can install?

I don't really care about the built in speakers, but audio out is important to me. Also pretty sure I'll treat it with extra care. :)

You get it with either an AUO or CMO screen. There's no way to tell for certain which one you're gonna get beforehand. I have a CMO screen, which I like Quite a bit. It's not really recomended to change the screen yourself, as your warranty is voided.

    Audio out is good.

Not that I know of. Some models have a higher concentration of this or that screen, but they still get both, and I don't know which model's gets more of which.

What do you think of the F8 instead of the A8? I hear it's basically just an update. Things I don't like about it are the added weight and ugly as sin webcam which I don't need in the first place.

ASUS F8 Series F8SA-X2 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T7500(2.20GHz) 14" Wide XGA 1GB 160GB DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 - $1,250

    ASUS A8 Series A8JS-4S024C NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T7200(2.00GHz) 14" Wide XGA+ 1GB DDR2 667 120GB 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700 - $1,150

Should I just deal with it and go for the F8 for the added processing power and larger HD? What would you do?

The F8 is faster, yes. But the battery life is worse. On the A8, you'll get around 2,5-3 hours. On the F8, you get 2 hours if you're lucky.

i got my a8js about 6 months ago. first i installed xp worked fine, but later on i decided to switch to vista ultimate(can't recall exactly when). i have experienced the buzzing sound on the left audio chanel discribed earlier in the forum and decided to live with that.
but about a month ago i was playing c&c 3 and the cpu overheated and turned off automatic. also i had my laptop render hours of video just before that so i thaught i just pushed it too far. but this didn't end. ever since then my laptop keeps overheating and faster and faster by the day too. now it overheats after 3 minutes of rendering in premiere. so i downloaded nhc and found out that my cpu heat is 65-70 C during normal(internet, music no more) use so i pumped the fan speed to max(255) and waited about 15 minutes to drop the heat to 53-54 C and it stopped there i waited an aditional 10 minutes and it still didn't lower (with dynamic switching on!) and running NOTHING but nhc. plus the fan speed keeps dropping every 5-10 minutes for no reason so i have to go in and re-adjust to max. even with these settings i cuoldn't render for more then 5-8 minutes and the cpu was at 90C.
oh almost forgot the fan doesn't seem to pump out as much air as it used to, but that might be a placebo now that i know how hot the cpu is.

i would apreceate any help since i really wouldn't want to turn my laptop in for repairs unless it is a must, cause the work mentallity in my country means i'd get it back a month from now if i get lucky.(and this is my only computer)

by the way would it void my garentee if i unscrewed the bottom and checked if there was anything visibly wrong with the fan or to just clean the dust out?

ps>sorry for any mistakes this is not my native language
