Only thing you can do is contact Asus NA support and ask them if they might send you another one, but it is highly unlikely that they will do so. Still, it can't hurt to ask.....

Any1 already had problems with sound?

My left headphone just stopped working out of the blue.
Tried it in another device and works perfectly.
Tried another headphones on the laptop and doesn't work as well.

If i pull off the jack a bit i can hear in both phones but it's full of static and jibberish.

Reinstalled sound drivers from asus.com but didn't solve the problem as well :/

I think it's a contact problem in the headphone jack slot of the computer. Not sure what to do except replace it, but I have no experience with such things.

I installed everything according to asus.

I'm afraid that, going back to XP will keep this problem.. since its bios related. [EDIT] -> BIOS or not.. cause I updated it and it stayed in the same way...

    Tks in advance

    Hi there,

My Bro has been banging on about how well Ubuntu runs on his notebook. Does anyone run it on the A8JS? I am still running XPPro and during the last 6 months (despite a reinstall) my notebook has been getting progressively slower.

Vista sucks, I have used it and I really see little value in it. It's like a bloated version of XP. But Microsoft want you to upgrade (for a fee of course) now how do you get people to upgrade from a working system... I know updates! (that slow down XP). I have run almost the identical set up for 2 years, so I see no other reason for the slow down.

Question: Am I the only paranoid one out there?
Question: Do Microsoft have a glaringly obvious conflict of interest?

    Back to Ubuntu... :)

Ubuntu works fine on my A8JS. I dual boot to Ubuntu & XP. It has flawless access to wireless, all devices, and write access to the NTFS partition. Ubuntu has an option to run from CD without installing anything, so you have a no-risk trial to verify it yourself.

Thanks. Why the dual boot? I was going to do that anyway, but I am interested in why you still need XP games or software you just can't get for Ubuntu?

Vista runs flawlessly, snappy, no lag, great for games - I also use it with XBMC as media center for our TV
Ubuntu runs flawlessly, especially 8.10 that detects the display correctly right away

Can I replace the ABG wireless card to WIFI Link 5100 draft-n card? I believe the 5100 card needs only 2 antennas.

    Would it work?

Running Ubuntu 7.10 (since 7.04) without problems on my A8Js and Beryl or CompizFusion working great and better than Win XP. Under Win XP my HDD overheat within 10 min... under Ubuntu not.

When my A8Js stays at 2.0GHz and the heat exceeds 80C (normal 56C), my LCD screen will suddenly go dark. For such (XP game) sessions, I can drop the maximum CPU rate to stay in the 60s-70s. Notebook Hardware Control > CPU Speed > Max Multiplier: 9x (normal setting at max 12x).

If you guys are overheating in XP, I think there are issues. You might want to try cleaning out the insides with compressed air and if that doesn't work, reseat the heatpipe with some fresh thermal paste.

When my wife had the A8Js, we never cleaned it and it overheated to the point where it shut itself off. While under warranty, Asus replaced the GPU and the top of the chassis that were both damaged by the heat. Now that it's my laptop, I clean it regularly.

Well, I really blew it. Doing so lowered the idle temperature 6 degrees, and I can no longer overheat the CPU under the highest game stress. I removed the 4 bottom screws, and the 3 fan screws, air sprayed the exit ducts, Q-tipped the fan blades, and re-assembled. The few minutes were well worth the effort. Thanks for the suggestion & Infobooth link!

Great! I think every notebook manufacturer should include instructions on how to do this with every new computer... there's just so many people with overheating notebooks and who have no idea that these 5 minutes of cleaning will save them all the trouble...

can someone point me to an adapter for DVI out to external monitor, or advise me on the best way to do this (A8JS)? I haven't bought the external monitor yet. Will probably use it with the precision in sig also.

Most, if not all, monitors have DVI so you don't need an adapter.

Most monitors will come with a cable that will work on the A8Js. If you get one that does both DVI and VGA, you'll probably end up with a VGA cable. Either way, the cable with be the same on both ends.

    Hi,

I have just purchased an eee pc 1000 with SSD. I am thinking of buying faster SSD to install. Has anyone tried to install the 'old' SSD into their PCI slot on the A8JS?

I was thinking of running the operating system from it....

I also have the same problem. I tried your "CLONE" mode but I could not find it. But when I connected the s-video, it is then that I see "CLONE" mode. Am I doing something wrong? I connected the S-Video to composite adapter to the S-Video of my A8Js and then found a composite (a three colored one, if it mattered) and connected that through the other end of the adapter. Then connected the composite to the video of my television.

Any help would be grateful, this would help me out a lot when I go back to school.

    Thanks.

RIP my a8js. I was probably one of the first people to ever get one. Maybe it was overheating issues, but the screen just turned off in the middle of gaming one day and when I tried to reboot, entire screen was white with squiggles on it. Hooked up to another monitor, it would show XP booting up (albeit with blue lines on the screen), and then freeze or BSOD after a successful dskchk (no problems found). Out of warranty for 3 months or so, of course. :( I'm getting an N80 to replace it, but it's too bad it didn't last me through school. Just a few more months would have been so perfect.

I'll call Asus and see if they have any ideas what is wrong.. corrupt gfx card? power surge that burned gfx card and memory? I have no idea :(

I have. Don't remember if I did anything special (My A8Js died more than a year ago), but try forcing it through the drivers. It's fairly easy to do if you have an ATI card, but I don't remember how it was in nVIDIAs settings.

To A8JS owners. If you were to buy a laptop today, what would you go with? The criteria are the same as when you bought your own A8Js. Price performance, features, value, quality, the same apply today. What model or perhaps non-Asus brand would you buy?

I'd pay extra and get a HP 8530p or a Thinkpad T500 if I wanted some mobility or a Clevo M860TU if I wanted as much as I get from my present Asus F8Sa, which is to say very little.

Hey Everybody i just got this laptop for $400 with 3GB of ram and a 160 GB HD. I was wondering Can I go with 4GB of Ram?. Also, How does 1280x1024 res look when gaming ?....is it blurry since it is not its native res?

You need a 64-bit os for 4 GB to be recognized. And it might be limited to 3 GB in any case.

The screen can't do 1280x1024, due to it being higher than the native 1440x900 (it doesn't fit and it's got slightly more pixels). However, if you mean on an external LCD, it depends on the native resolution of that particular Screen and how good it is at scaling.

I just ordered an N81Vp. My A8Js still works great; I sold it to a friend to help fund the upgrade.

The N81Vp is the same weight as the A8Js, has the same screen size, and has an equivalent class of hardware except a couple years newer. I wish it had the high res screen, but the LED backlighting is cool.

I considered both the F6Ve, which is smaller and lighter, and the MSI GT627, which is heavier and has faster video. But the N81Vp was the sweet spot of weight and performance. It's funny that I thought the same thing about the A8Js compared to its competition at the time.

My A8js just went in for warranty...I ordered it 2.27.07 but got it around the end of March 07. They've had it since Monday. Should warranty cover me? I thinks it a bad inverter board...the screen was getting dim, which is awful on tired eyes...other than that, it's running like a champ.

My laptop also went in white/bars mode a week ago. I flashed the bios ; removed the LCD connector and booted only in external. I opened all ed laptop and removed CMOS battery. Still the same problem. This happened a few months ago, but in the moment the nvidia drivers - linux - came in place the screen would boot(not anymore). I even installed zindows.Nothing.

I`m afraid of buying a new graphics card and that not being the problem. And thats 220euros and there are laptops as good as a a8js starting from 500-600 euros. Did anyone repair this problem already?

    Thank you

Mine overheated so many times :0.
The thermal module had to be replaced twice while I still had warranty.

I saw asus F8SN pictures and the graphics MXM inverted is exactly the same as A8JS I`m thinking in buying a gf9500 from a F8SN If BIOS doesn`t recognize it is there anything I can do?

My thanks to fabarati, barleyguy, & forevertheuni for laptop recommendations. The store display Levino's were noticeably heavy, though solid. I am biased toward Nvidia for Linux driver support. The horizon promises OLED screens, Wifi 802.11n, & 2nd gen solid state drives, but necessity lacks patience, so the hunt continues.

It is an embarrassing fact that with old age, certain things get a bit floppy. Specifically, when I set the tilt angle on the A8JS, the LCD is mounted firmly at the base, but the screen freely pivots 2 inches, throwing off the viewing angle. I'm hoping for any suggestions for repair (user or paid). Or are issues with keeping it up in declining years the norm?

I am not sure if this would help, but you could try tightening the hinge screws (we have an A8J disassembly manual on the Info Booth, I believe).

Screens do tend to get "floppier" with age, though.

By the way I ordered a MXM-inverted graphics card that's from the F8SN configuration for my A8JS, I have my fingers thightly crossed that the BIOS recognizes it. I saw photos of F8SN and A8JS and the socket is exactly the same.

7700 Go chips in the 512MB variant are a pain to source right now, does anyone know of a replacement? I'd like to spend about $150 on this venture. I've see asusparts.eu selling the chip, but it's $204 before shipping with the exchange rate right now.
