I don't see it as an alternative to waiting because the Alienware M17x R3 is not orderable at this time. Dell may resume shipments with the fixed chipset slightly faster than Asus, but either way you're going to be waiting. Anyone selling machines with the i7-2xxx are selling them with the flawed chipset, so caveat emptor.
In addition to the 120Hz display, I believe that most 3D systems require an IR transmitter (usually next to the web cam) so the glasses can sync up with the display. Don't know for sure if that's the case with Asus, but I suspect it is.

Here is new information about the chipset issue:
Intel begins shipping fixed B3 stepping 6-series chipsets to first-tier makers -
Updates on Intel Sandy Bridge recall:
According to Intel and Asus R&D, the issues are not just with devices connected to SATA ports 2,3,4,5. they said as long as SATA ports 2,3,4,5 are enable in the BIOS then all devices are affected even for hard drives that are connected to port 0,1.
Refresh models should arrived on mid March, model name and specs won't change but it will have a special sticker on the outside of the box indicating they are refresh model.
Asus will start mandatory recall on 02/21/2011 from resellers if they see any resellers still shipping affected models. -
Ok I have one not so tricky question and my story to tell.
As you know I got problem with my G73SW (hard disk clicking noise problem) and I have returned it and got a full refund. The techincs here in Slovenia say that this might be also a serial problem of those laptops so be aware of those 720GB hard drives.
Also I would like to ask you (since the laptop really stunned me otherways) you are all talking about some 3moths until new series G73 come out?
What is this about- what will be changed? New processor? And from where you heard that it will be 3 moths? I asked asus but I have not get any actual date when will totally good G73 whithout errors come.
I hope you understand what am I talking about. Meanwhile I have bought MEDION AKOYA P6630

Omg, we have to wait longer now for a problem free SB laptop?
This is gonna suck hard.. -
Buy the current problem infested sb laptop then right now or wait for a problem free sb laptop in a couple months.
-
Hm, I wonder if they can police resellers going through ebay as well, like with this G73SW auction.
I also wonder what the point is of keeping the auction going while mentioning the recall on the same page, but maybe that's just me. Might as well just pull the item. Sure, the buyer assumes all the risk so long as he/she is informed of the facts, but still... -
What's the source? I believe you, but I'll have more faith in it once I see source. -

Hopefully by mid of March we get a real problem free SB laptop. I can't believe SB brought so many SATA problems..
The performance is outstanding but I'm not sure whether it's still worth the wait..
I've been eye-ing since January, omg.. -
x2, it sounds possible but this is the first I've heard of it, and generally news like this doesn't stay secret in the tech industry very long.
-
That is not an auction per say , it's just an item sold by a real shop - btotech, which i do believe is represented by gear2play here. (someone correct me if i'm wrong). And yes the SB issue will be covered even for those items, as long as the seller provided the buyer with a warranty certificate.
-
True, and I see your point that it's not an item up for bid, but you know what I mean. Whether it's being sold by BTO or anyone else, it just seems a bit silly to continue to sell an item that's been recalled.
-
I hope I am not the only one who this irony is not lost on...
-
still waiting for link. i wanna see if it's certainly true or not.

I am pretty sure they will remove the item.
The source is from Asus, I was asking them about the N53SV series doesn't have SATA port 1 and no eSATA and if it's possible just fixed it with BIOS update by assigned optical drive to SATA port 1, they told me it's not that simple as long as all 6 ports are enable in the BIOS then all SATA devices are affected.
I am not sure if there will be a link, they just don't want resellers still shipping the affected models. -
@GenTechPC: it's ok. i just wanted to learn more details. thanks
So.. ports 0 (the one HDD use) and 1 are affacted too, because SATA 3Gbps ports are enabled and port 2 is being used by DVD-ROM..
then we HAVE TO send N53SV's back. It seems there's no other solution.
sigh.. i really LOVED this notebook and we don't know how long will it take Asus to release new SB ones -
FYI: following e-mail exchange I had with Asus support (in France), they told me that the new laptops with the corrected Sandybridge will have new reference so that we can distinguish affected models from the new ones...
-
when will they release the new laptops with SB?
-
No, sir. Most definitely not...
On the bright side, maybe all the new SB units will be bundled with SP1 now.
-
Are there major updates and advantages with the SP1?
-
Not tons, but it's such a huge roll-up that it takes an hour or longer to install even on a powerful system. While it hits the general public today via Windows Update, I got it last week via my Technet subscription. Their standalone SP1 iso download alone is 1.9GB, but that integrates all versions. Mainstream downloaders ought find the x86 version is 537MB, x64 is 903MB, and Itanium is 511MB.
Some info about the service pack is here.
And CNet says:
"The service pack itself does not bring any new whiz-bang features for consumers, but brings two important back end additions that promise to improve performance in Windows 7's server counterpart, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. The update adds Dynamic Memory as well as RemoteFX, two technologies that increase the density of virtual machines, as well as the graphical prowess of thin-client hardware respectively ( more on those here). The RemoteFX feature is also coming to the consumer version of Windows 7 in the form of client-side support.
Also included in SP1 are a number of fixes for bugs and security holes, which may be useful for those who do not use the auto-update feature, or are applying the update to machines that do not have an active Internet connection. Other small changes include improved HDMI audio device performance, a fix for printing mixed-orientation XPS documents, and "improved support" for Advanced Format storage devices." -
Thanks for the info's dude.
-
On a fully updated OS, the download was ~85MB and took roughly 7 minutes to install with 2 restarts.
-
Yes but according to Intel the problem might take 2~3 years to happen, before you send it back to Asus you might want to call Asus make sure they have new mainboard in stock first so you won't be without your laptop for long time.

Great news
-
Lol, according to the site verification tool i get that my model is not affected.:
LE: After typing it in for the third time I get the horror, that I already knew, your product is affected by this issue.
LE1: If I write the SN all in caps, it says the product is not affected
-
These are great News thank you
-
Well, looks like I know what I'll be doing today...
Also glad to see we wont be getting refurbs...
Just called the hotline and spoke to a nice lady, she gave me a case number, told me to register my laptop on Asus's website, after April 1st Asus should be contacting me regarding a replacement. That's where I'm at thus far. -
I'm having this weird issue where I cant see anything on that given link. It just opens up the ASUS page with news at the top and nothing below. I tried different browsers even, still nothing on the page.
Can anyone tell me why everyone is going into a tizzy? -
What does a "new reference" mean? Is that like a label, or a brand name or something on the motherboard (a physical difference that you can check)?

It's a sticker that says 'new revision certified design': http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...ing-updated-intel-sandy-bridge-notebooks.html
-
OOOooOh! cool! Is that something that only Asus does, or is that an official Intel sticker that will be slapped on all revised SB units (like my m17x r3)?
-
lonelywolf90 Notebook Consultant
Wee, does it mean that G53 is coming soon too? =)
-
Everyone is "going into a tizzy"
because ASUS posted a news release that they've got fixed Sandy Bridge replacement parts in (including notebooks) and are beginning the process of deal with the claims and starting the RMAs/cross ship requests very soon (most likely on a first come/first serve, so sign up now!)
-
It's not first come/first server. All users can ask for an affected product replacement, for up to 2 months from the date of purchase. (as written on the asus notice site).
-
Incorrect, it is first come first serve:
Intel®6 Series Chipset Resolution
(emphasis mine)
The 2 month stipulation is (if I remember correctly) for eligibility for warranty extension only. -
Yaaaay! Looks like good neeews....oi wait.
What does this mean for us Australians? -
Your inserted material includes something that says, "For US and Canadian customers only". myx is in Romania, and there may be a different policy there. Gryffindor wonders about Australia and I would like to know when new (as opposed to replacement) G73 notebooks will be available in the UK.

I think the most obvious choice for users outside the NA region is to call the respective hotline listed on the ASUS support page for the chipset recall. Certainly by this point ASUS has had time to communicate the proper information to its call centers and they will be able to handle any inquiries.
I still stand by my stance that ASUS has indicated the process will be first come/first serve. myx says it is not, however (at least for NA users) ASUS states it is...
Regardless, fill out the service form and call the hotlines as you have deadlines to meet to get your replacement. The good news is ASUS is getting the fixed parts and communicating their policies of swapping with new equivalent parts in a timely fashion, which is as good as I believe anyone has seen ASUS' support get. -
I bought the Asus 73gsw three days ago from Compusa 1499.00. I was very pleased until today BSOD and three complete lock ups. I have not had the BSOD since I uninstall-ed vista and returned to XP. Mabe its me, I installed farcry2. 3d pinball and Bioshock 1. Pinball brought it to its knees total lock up. farcry2 maxed out, stuttered like a retard. I do not know mabe its something else I installed, having some kind of conflict.

As I said the bit you quoted specifically said US AND CANADIAN CUSTOMERS ONLY. This doesn't mean they are not following this elsewhere, but it doesn't mean they are either.NaterGator said: ↑I think the most obvious choice for users outside the NA region is to call the respective hotline listed on the ASUS support page for the chipset recall. myx is in Romania. NOT in US or Canada.
1) Arrangements may be different in Europe, or his/her part of Europe
2) Arrangements may the same, but support services may not have the same information - I gather ASUS support is not uniformly wonderful. Web page may say one thing and phone support another - and you won't know which one is right. (I've been trying to get information from a major international bank, and getting two people to give you the same information is almost impossible - except for the people who just chant "we don't know".)
My own issues are not with a defective notebook.NaterGator said: ↑Regardless, fill out the service form and call the hotlines as you have deadlines to meet to get your replacement. I want to buy a NEW one.
I don't know whether Asus/Intel are prioritising supplies of the new chipset to replacing defective laptops or sending supplies to the oem stream. Nor yet how soon Asus (or other SB notebook manufacturers) will get the new machines out. -
If you purchased it only 3 days ago, you might want to consider returning it while you're still within the refund period. As it is, Asus will likely be having CompUSA and all resellers returning those recalled defective units still in stock (like the one you just purchased) to swap for replacements.bbray said: ↑I bought the Asus 73gsw three days ago from Compusa 1499.00. I'm curious if any G73SW users have flashed one of the two new BIOSes published to the ASUS website... and if so what was your motivating factor and did it fix anything?
-
I've heard that the G73SW will soon be released with the non-defective SB processors. Anyone know a date regarding this? I'm really interested in getting the Asus G73SW-A1 from XoticPc.
-
XoticPC and several others are quoting mid to late March. I've not seen anything official, but I'd expect to see them in late March. Several places are accepting pre-orders as well if you want to get in line.Nero_Sparda_04 said: ↑I've heard that the G73SW will soon be released with the non-defective SB processors. If the upgrade to i7-2720qm wasn't so much, I'd get this. How come its an extra $399 when the sagers is only an extra $160 (though I may know the answer but not sure)?

I gotta say, after having to use the touchpad for a few days, I don't think I could ever go without using a mouse, touchpad is the only inconsistent thing on this laptop! lol
-
All the g73 units are experiencing this. I hope the g74 would not have the same problem.
