Hi,
Yesterday I got my Asus N53JN with FHD and Optimus. I ran the Windows Experience index and got the following results. CPU scores quite low to my mind. Then I ran the CPU Benchmark and got similar results for CPU. That worries me a lot. Any opinions?

hmm i just bought mine today picking it up 2morrow ill run some tests once i get it
-
Ok I figured it out, quite stupid actually. Remember to switch off Power4Gear mate before you run some tests. Btw, no matter what I do, I could not manage 3D Vantage to test the 335m instead of crappy Intel HD.
Also here's some tool to show which gpu is on.
Optimus test tools finally in users hands - LaptopVideo2Go Forums -
looking forward to a quick review and specs!
-
ah thats good, puts my mind at ease now =) what results did u get after? Btw have u done a clean install or just left it? Seems like there was alot of bloatware with the comp. Im also quite tempted to shove a momentus or ssd in the comp although mine comes with a 640gb 7200rpm drive.
-
That is my 3. laptop over 8 years and I have never seen such bloatware in one place before. So I reformatted and made a clean install. Asus does not have any new drivers other than the ones on the disks so do not bother at the moment.
For 3DMark Vantage, as I mentioned; I have not been able to dictate the benchmark to test 335 instead of Intel HD. Open to suggestions. Also any good benchmarking tool other than 3DMark? -

ah k can u tell me how u did the clean install?
-
Well I had had 7 Pro before so I just went on with it. After installation , just use the driver disk and for drivers and some utils. While installling, be sure not to delete or format the recovery partition
Something tells me that I will be needing it in the future...
-
alright im on the laptop now and can i say i love this thing. its a really nicely made laptop in most aspects. This keyboard will take some time to get used to. For those who dont know they fitted a numpad onto this thing as well so its kind of squished in. The bounce rate is a little softer than what im used to but ok for now.
-
Can you overclock GT335 and run 3dmark 2006? What results did you get with max OC?
-
I have not run any tests with 3DMark 06. I used Vantage but somehow I could not manage it to test my 335 instead of HD. Did you manage b.tuned?
-
nah i havent actually. the optimus really likes running the integrated which is a good thing i suppose. Ill install sc2 later and see how it runs. Btw what battery life have u been getting? mine only gets about 3.5 hours on lowest battery settings, screen brightness etc. with light browsing online. what about yours?
-
I got 6795 from 3dMark06. Is this low?

ok i dont get it. ive been trying all night but i cant seem to get sc2 running on medium specs at native res...or can i just simply not with a gt 335m?

Here is a full review for ASUS N53Jn, Unfortunately is not in english but the test for proc. video and others can be seen. Aslo there are a lot of pictures with the laptop. I see there 8150 points in 3DMark 06 for the GT 335M.

http://translate.google.com/transla.../Recenzja-Asus-N53JN.35166.0.html&sl=pl&tl=en here is another full review for Asus N53Jn. It seems that 1366x768 screens made by AOU are very dark. Can anyone who owns version with FullHD comment, what is the manufacturer of your screen and how bright it is?
-
its very bright. i had to lower the integrated darkness setting and enhance a bit of the colour saturation etc. to get it to the way i like it. It may be different for each user but its perfectly bright for me.
-
Can you check the manufacturer of your screen?
-
Yes mate. They installed quite silently after clean install. I did not update drivers through Windows Update and direcly installed Nvidia's on first fall to desktop.
For the other question about brightness, mine is FHD and it's very bright for me also. I had to decrease it a bit.
Still wondering about the low 3DMark 06 score I got.. -
Btw, I can easily state that the BangOlufsen speakers at N53JN are by far the best speakers I have seen on a laptop. Of course no laptop can offer quality as standalone speakers do but this is definetely an improvement.
-
wait so what drivers are u currently using? Using the optimus gpu state viewer i cant seem to get it to show that the nvidia card is actually running. Its starting to bug me a little.
-
Btw if anyone is interested in buying this laptop off me chuck me a pm. Ill be willing to sell it off because its a bit big for my usage.
-
+1 the comment about the sound surprised how good it is everytime I listen to something.
I also reduced the brightness on my screen still considering reducing it more -
hrmm there seems to be a problem with playing starcraft 2 on my laptop, i cant seem to get the gpu to activate for sc2. -.-''

Hi b.tuned,
I have solved my problem that you are facing.
Basically for your model (N53JN),
I recommend you install a lower version of NVidia WHQL.
Please try out previous production version which is 257.21.
Download it from Nvidia website Driver->Beta and Archives.
If that does not work either, try out beta 258.69 which is 1 version earlier from production version 258.96
It has to be the Nvidia Graphic driver problem.
Please do not give up as I been facing this problem for few weeks
and now that I have solved the problem, the video card is fantastic. -
Hi b.tuned,
Another thing you could try before install other Nvidia version driver
is to use restore point to restore to your original
Nvidia GPU driver version (the one that came originally).
Once restored, then use my approach as I've listed in the thread "A42JV with GT335M problem" -
Where are you folks who have the N53JN with FHD screen? Where did you buy yours?
It doesn't look like it will come to North America. It's definitely not coming to UK per this press release...Cheers
"N53JN
* Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-520M (2.4GHz - 2.933GHz) or Core™ i3-370M (2.4GHz)
* OS: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit
* Display: 15.6" HD TFT (1366 x 768, Color-Shine)" .... ugh!

the problem with using the whql drivers that u mentioned is that i ultimately loose optimus by using those drivers. The battery life of the n53jn is bearable right now. Losing optimus would mean too much power usage for the laptop.
SC2 is very funny though. it just refuses to use the nvidia gpu even if i specifically tell it to. my fps rates are around 10-15 at best. veryyyy strange. -
ok good news i got my drivers to install properly and now this machine is really beasting it. if only the battery life was slightly higher in the 4 hours range...it would be PERFECT. I will definately try and do some benchmarks once i get to shanghai in 2 days. Will keep everyone posted!
-
yeah i really like this line of notebooks in addition to the u33's but the battery life is a deal breaker for me...why asus...whyyyyyyy
-
I'm living at Sweden. FHD versions are available in Scandinavia overall. How did you manage to make SC2 work with gt335m b.tuned?
-
i downloaded and installed the latest whql verde drivers. Its the 258.96, i thought that they didnt work originally but that was because i downloded the english edition rather than the international version. once i used international everything fell into place
-
By internaational which site of nvidia and which language version do you refer to mate?

hi is it gt 425m your one? is it a dx 11 gpu?
-
Good to hear that you finally solved the Optimus problem.
I don't know either there is international version of whql and I notice the file size is much smaller than the one I downloaded in Nvidia download page.
Now that your Optimus is working, you shall appreciate the NVidia GT335M graphic card. I'm tuning my SC2 now and can play with High Settings.
Yet to try on Ultra Settings. -
How long battery time do you have when watching a movie ? =)
-
Update on battery life: I managed to get 4 + hours by enabling the Intel DPST function on battery mode. I swear i was SO happy to see 4:37 on battery left at one stage. That may have been at its lowest usage but for me its good enough for uni.
-
How comfortable is the keyboard/typing/flex?
-
Ok im having some serious issues when trying to install a fresh win 7 x64 on this machine.
Anyone figured out how to do a fresh install, mine goes into a bootloop when Windows is installed.
Im guessing its related to the UEFI / EFI bios stuff, but even when pressing ESC when booting and installing from there, I seem to get nowhere.
Any help would be appreciated. -
I just got over 8000 in 3dmark06! Using 258.96 and overclocking the tiny beast 335M at 575/948/1380
This is fun!
By the way, enyone having terrible CPU-whine when disabling the "Super hybrid Engine" ? My cpu is 450MAttached Files:

Cmon owners, post some pics of the machines!
-
I have 3 complaints about this notebook:
1: Significant keyboard flex. Its too soft and flexy.
2: At some different batterisaving modes, Notebook produses major noises from the hardrive, and have very annoing and very loud CPU-whine.
3: On my Full HD screen I found to dead pixels.
The result is that I am returning mine.
Asus has really disp me on this buy. Not going to buy anything from Asus in the future. Asus is not worth the trouble or the money. -
Sorry to hear about your negtive experience but you are writing off a brand that was #1 in satisfaction among PCs and comes out with some very nice, well priced, varied notebooks.
I am trying hard to save up so I can own an Asus Notebook. Best warranty on the market. -

To my surprise, i5-450m is actually a better processor to get higher score for 3DMark compared to other i5s.

Where can i buy the n53jn with the fhd screen in America?
