I use it with yahoo messenger and I also tried it with ASUS LifeFrame and to me the frame rate in Yahoo looks ok. It not much slower than my external microsoft LifeCam VX-7000.
Of course I cannot compare the picture quality between these.
With respect to that LifeCam VX-7000 is much better.

    Hey guys!
I recently bought N71 and for now everything is working fine. however, i have a problem with the screen. it's glossy and reflects just about everything. i have already worked on glossy screens, but it was never this bad. working in daylight is a horror, watching a movie even worse. furthermore, the colors seem empty, greyish, black is never really black. until now i've been working on a samsung t200 (not perfect, but far better than this screen), so now i'm desperate. is there any way to fix this?

    otherwise, n71 is a great laptop. :)

    thanks!

Hey Turbogear, quick question for you. If I remember correctly, there were only the installed NTFS drives available to select from in the EasyFlash utility. How do you get to a USB thumb drive? If you just plug it in, will DOS recognize it?

Asus tech support didn't say, and I didn't ask, but I assume that this type of problem will require replacement of the notebook and not repair. So I will be faced once again with a BIOS that may or may not need flashing. I would certainly want to do it correctly the next time around.

Yes you plugin the USB stick and then start the notebook and go to the bios.
It will be visible from EasyFlash.
You have to plug it in before starting the notebook. It will not be recognized if you plug it in when already in bios.

ASUS will not replace the complete notebook for you. They will replace the mainboard.

I'll give the USB stick a try next time around.

Mainboard replacement, huh. Won't this cause issues with the original OS on the C:\ drive which I assume will be retained? Or will it "wake up" to a new motherboard? My experience with desktops says not. Why don't they just pop out the BIOS ROM chip and put in a good one? I've never seen a notebook board though, maybe they are hardwired.

Well usually in laptops the bios chip is soldered on the mainboard so it cannot be easily replaced.

In normal situations windows should work with the new mainboard. Usually the OEM windows is not related to the hardware in the same sence like a retail licence. The OEM windows reads info out of the bios and makes auto activation offline. This is called SLIC table and contains specific info telling the windows that you have a certain notebook from certain manufacturer where offline activation is allowed. If the SLIC table is there then the windows should work normally.

In some cases though it could be that ASUS puts in a mainboard that does not have the SLIC corresponding to windows version that you have. In that case the windows will not auto activate. This usually does not happen but did happen to a N61JQ owner where he had to send his notebook back the second time becuase repair center forgot to initialize the SLIC in the bios and windows was not activating automatically for him.

    Re: screen too glossy
    Dear J_a_x:
Never fear. there's a company called Photodon -- Improved Display Function & Use - Film, Hoods, Cleaning | Photodon.com -- that sells "screen protector" films, some of which ( ) are made exactly for the purpose of reducing glare. You can get it custom-cut for an extra $2.50, as I did, for the N71JQ -- the dimensions to ask them for are: MXT-3240-01 19" Wide - 16.06 x 10.03" (408 x 255mm) - Anti-Glare, Thin
HDimension: 380mm exact VDimension: 215mm exact

    SquareCornerOpt: Rounded Corners

    NmbrtoCut: 1

    MakeModel: Asus N71JQ-A1

Have you ordered and installed one? If so, is the film adhesive backed and how difficult was it to install without getting any bubbles?

    Thanks!

I was looking to purchase my very first laptop when I stumbled upon the ASUS N71JQ series. I was looking at picking it up through xoticpc.com and just noticed that they released the pre-orders for the new ASUS N73JQ-A1. Would it be best to place the pre-order and wait till aug/sept to get the new model or should I just go with the N71. The only change I could find was the new N73 model having a GeForce GT 425M vs the Radeon HD5730 on the N71. I think customized the prices are basically the same +/- a couple of dollars. Any suggestions?

Well at the moment I think it is not possible to say much about it as there is not too much details available on Nvidia GT 425M.

I suppose this new card is based on the Fermi family. I am suspicious if it would be better than the ATI 5730.
So far Fermi were not impressive at all. Nvidia had lot of trouble with the Fermi so far. They are too hot, consumes lot of power and slower than the ATI cards.
For this particular card I think we have to wait for benchmarks or some reviews to see where its performance level, power consumption and heat output level lies.

Ok, I don't know if my ears just got better or something, but I can now hear the high-pitched sound. As Jovani mentioned in an earlier post, it comes from the left edge of the laptop and sounds kind of like a high-pitched buzzing morse code.

It definitely has something to do with the mic; his trick works, but seems like an unsatisfactory solution (it routes microphone input to the playback device you choose). A strange thing I noticed is that the sound goes away when you even click on the "Recording" tab in Recording Devices (right-click speaker icon => Recording Devices; the sound goes away while the "Recording" tab is showing).

Finally, the backlit keyboard that I ordered from Asusparts.eu is on its way. :)
I ordered it on 12th of June, but they were out of stock.

I am not sure at the moment if I will get some time to implement the Backlit mode before end of July. :(
I am too busy at the moment.

    Dear John_WA:
    I ordered their RJ1 film (i.e., anti-glare, but not their most anti-glare
"matte" film) when I ordered my laptop, because given the video of the laptop on this forum I was sure I would need it. Also, my husband was in the US for a business trip, and I didn't want to wait till he happened to have another.
However, in the end I didn't install it because the laptop -- at least the one I got -- actually seems fine to me. Not at all as overly glossy as I had thought. So I can't comment on installation -- there are numerous videos on YouTube you can look at. I kept the film, of course; it may well be that if and when I use the laptop under different lighting conditions, I will feel the need to install it.

Tammy, thanks a lot for your very detailed reply. I currently use a Sony laptop with a glossy screen and I don't find glare to be a problem for me so perhaps when I finally get the N71JQ it will also be fine. I'm in no rush so I'm sort of waiting for Asus to fix the fan issue before I order mine.

    Hi,

Based on my experience with Targus laptop bags/covers I would say that the N71JQ will not fit in that bag. The item description says up tp 17 inch rather than 17.3 inch. I learned the hard way that Targus sees 17 and 17.3 inch as two different things. Some of their products say 17.3 inch and those are the ones that the N71JQ will actually fit in. I have noticed this with other brands of laptop cases as well.

It is hard to believe that 0.3 inches would make a differences, but it does.

    Dave

PS, I went and looked at the bag listed a couple of pages back and it is listed as 17 inch bag as well. I guess it is a total crap shoot as to what will and will not fit. Buy from Amazon.com, cause they have a solid 30 day return policy and good customer service.

For TurboGear and anyone else, reference BIOS and Driver Updates. I am waiting for the return of my N71Jq which is having its mainboard replaced due to a faulty BIOS flash. In the mean time, I'm reading up on this rather difficult sport of updating drivers. A most useful guide on this process is contained on this page, and seems to indicate that there is a list of changes and bug fixes that you can look at and see if the particular update you are considering will fix the problem you are having. I can't find this information. In most other software/hardware updates there is a readme that comes along with the download and addresses these issues. Can somebody point me to the link or page where the documentation is for all of the various updates? Thanks.

They definitely did not replace the whole thing, just the LCD panel. The panel is different because the stuck pixels are in different places. I can tell the rest is the same because it came with a teeny tiny scratch on one edge that was still there. Plus the residue from peeling the stickers off was still there, too.

I think mine is just about to CA now. I hope the guys at ZoomTech know what they're doing.

If Asus won't fix it, do I have any recourse? Amazon appears to have a big restocking fee... plus all this back-and-forth has definitely put me outside the return period anyway. I have this sinking feeling I paid $1300 for a notebook with a screwed-up screen...

Unfortunately, ASUS has stopped including change log of the different bioses since some time.
I don't understand why they don't upload this info on their website anymore as they used to do it before.
It is really annoying because we are not able to find out anymore what they changed when they release a new bios.

    Hello,

I tried to hook up my laptop to my Samsung LED TV but it does not work.
I hear a sound indicating that a plug and play device has been inserted but my laptop does not display on the monitor.

Is there a patch or some thing that I am missing?

    Has anyone encountered this issue?

my best suggestion is bring your laptop in to your local best buy or office supply store, etc, and try out the laptop in different bags. i don't travel much or take my N&! out, but i did get this one from best buy, it is a backpack, but fits in snuggly and all my other gear including the power brick, hub, and assorted cords and external drive...my cooler would fit, too, if i wanted to bring it. and it doesn't scream I have a laptop. would make a good carry-on.

Hi I also own this laptop.

I was wondering what are some safe temps for it .

Currently with my cooler and all the crap im running it stays about 53-58c

So what tempts should I be worried about it reaching?

If your CPU and/or GPU pass 95 C during normal (but heavy) use you may start to worry. Modern CPU/GPU chips are designed to operate at temps up to 95-100 C or even more.

I have a Targus bag here, Model TBT046, which according to an earlier post will fit the N71Jq like a glove. At the moment my notebook is in for repairs but I'll certainly check the fit once I have it back. It was $88.21 at Amazon and has the Zip-Thru feature for rapidly clearing airport screening. Nice, sturdy construction. Well padded and lockable zipper notebook enclosure on one side. Plenty of padded velcro closure pockets on the workstation side. I think it will suit my purposes quite nicely.

Click on Gallery----You will see a world of difference.
The DVD tray is on the left side for one.
Look at the sides to see different locations of ports etc.
    Nice looking case when closed/color.
Has a row of control buttons to the left of keyboard.
Are the keys of better quality? They look different?
    Check it out. ;)

Yes I also heard that this GPU is not that good.

It's a pitty that ASUS don't release this with an ATI card which are currently better.

The design looks nice. The ports seems to be little bit better organized than on N71JQ.

i bet it is just another 300 series card with a reworked clock. and then they slapped a new model number on it to make it seem like it may be a low end fermi card. it seems to be how nvidia does mobile GPU cards.

I do like how the ports are laid out. i do like the n71 keyboard, not sure about the n73. I am very happy with mine, the 73 has potential, but as long the n71 is still available for sale, i would recommend it over the N73.

Yes I will also recommend N71JQ.
Most probably the GPU in ours is better that on the N73.
I believe it is a better machine.
I will keep mine at least for 1.5 years.

Currently, I am going to make it even better by moding the keyboard with a Backlit one when I get the time.
Now the keyboard and all the other things needed for the mode are here. :D
Actually, I have built it in, but without the backlight fuction.
I am too busy to implement it at the moment. :(

    @PaulW
I tested the German Backlit Gaming Keyboard that I received today in the morning. :D
It is similar to my older English keyboard but the ASUS functions key symbols are in black instead of blue on the old one.
Somehow this new gaming Backlit keyboard feels little bit more comfortable to type on.

Now I know that actually the power for the backlight will be drawn from the QT110 chip.
I powered it up using batteries to check how the backlight works.
I will later do some measurements in the LAB to see how much current the LEDs draw at 5V supply.

So I will modify the design that you posted when I get some time.
I think the QT110 chip is stressed with keyboard load and it can fail at some point. I will rather use some buffer amplifier at the output of the QT chip to derive the current load for the backlit function.

Furthermore, I am thinking to add a resistor in parallel to the capacitor as it is recommended in the data sheet.

Yeah symbols are in white instead of in blue, I think this is because the white conducts light somewhat better.

Is it the QT110 or QT118 you're talking about? I thought the QT110 did not draw from the chip?

Looking forward to see your uber-circuit. Maybe I'll change mine if needed.

Ops I made two typos in the original post.
Yes the text is in white and not black.
    I meant to say QT118.

The only difference between the two is that QT110 is active low so it has to sink the current from the backlight.
QT118 is active high so it has to source the current.
Did you check if the QT110 is getting hot when backlight is on?

If I remember correctly then QT110 can only sink 4mA of current.

I didn't check specifically for it, but can't remember the chip getting overly hot when it was outside the laptop.

    Let's hope so. :D :D

I did a measurement of the current drawn by the keyboard backlight when operated at 5V supply and I found it to be around 250mA.
So my idea is to use a transistor amplifier at the output of the QT118 to supply power to the keyboard.

I will post the details here after I build it up later this month.

Did you ever resolve the slow-scan property of the N71Jq integrated webcam? Were you trying it in the Win7 OS and also the Express Gate OS? I think I checked it in both and it behaved the same. I also noticed there was little improvement in scan speed by changing to a smaller image size. I have the same webcam (VID_13D3) and located and attempted to load the latest driver from the Asus support page. It didn't load or else it was the same as what was already in there. A little hard to tell with little correlation between the installed and available for download build dates. This is kind of a show-stopper for me since I really wanted to use video Skype to stay in touch with home from, of all places, Antarctica. Will there be a fix for this? Do I have to resort to an external camera? Am I getting my moneys worth?

I couldn't get any Blu-ray video to work out of the box. It would tell me PowerDVD (or whatever it is) needs an update, but trying to update would do nothing.

Before I toasted mine with an unsuccesful BIOS flash, I watched "2001: A Space Odyssey" in Blu-Ray. Ran it out to my HDTV with a HDMI cable. It took some fiddling with resolutions and video card settings and turn the TV off and on a few times but it finally worked. I think when you first launch the PowerDVD application you have to sign up or some such thing and then it should work. I have a FedEx tracking number for my N71Jq. It's coming back from warranty work. Can't wait.

Hi, i have a strange problem. My NB freezing (lagging) sometimes for few seconds.
In Race 07 game maybe 2 times in 3 hours for about 5 seconds.
When i browsing with Opera 1 times in 1 hous for 2-3 seconds.
When i cutting video in Edius 5.5 2 times per hour for about 1 minutes!!!

I think my 80GB SSD Intel® X25-M (34nm), 2.5", MLC, High Perf. do this. I found lot of topics where someone have similar problem with their SSD.
    Nobody has this problem?

I have the same SSD, and have no issues.

i do notice in your sig that you have your 5730 overclocked, could that be the cause of the problems? it may be beyond the safe OC speeds, I don't over clock so I am not sure what are the acceptable and stable OC speeds for the 5730, just something you may look into.
