Have you all DL'd and installed Tuesdays windows updates with no problem from KB2286198?
I am holding off til assured safe to do so. I heard it caused trouble BIG time but don't know if it affects our laptop too as some people had no problem.
Thanks,

Thanks for the advice. I followed the steps indicated above but it has failed to display on my screen.
The strange thing is my laptop recognizes the tv as it is shown in the Desktops & Displays of the Catalyst Control Center Interfaces.
My TV however picks up nothing on the screen and when I refresh it to search for new devices, its does not find the laptop hooked up to it.This appears to be a failure on the TV's part to recognize the laptop. The HDMI Cable is not defective because I have used it to connect my PS3 to it and it works just fine. So that leads me to determine if my there is a software patch update to my TV, specifically to read this laptop.
I have searched all over the net and cannot find any updates for a SAMSUNG UNB6000 LED TV.
Any clues or suggestions anyone? -
Hello everyone. First of all, this thread helped me come to my decision to buy my n71jq and I've loved it so far. I'm not sure if it's always been like this, but my front headphone jack (the one without s/pdif) makes some strange static-y noises. It's a bit hard to describe, but it's as if the laptop itself is messing around with the audio. When the cpu is under more stress, I can hear more static, and when the dvd drive is running, there's a whirring sound in the audio as well. I've only just recently noticed because I had used the s/pdif jack before, which had no problems. I don't really know how else to describe it, but that's just about the gist of it. Let me know if you need more info, and thanks in advance.

But I hear this noise only when I have the headset on and no audio is being played or the volume is very low. When I raise the volume this noise disappears. -
I found on the ESET website a link which talks about this issue: ESET Antivirus Software Updates and Information
I think ESET already released an update to fix the issue. -
I started having a BSOD issue about a week ago. It seemed to start after having problems and finally success in installing software for a Logitech Bluetooth mouse (posted previously). And shortly after that I also installed the ATI graphics card driver update package from the Asus download page to correct a problem accessing DVD content. There was a Windows update for the Bluetooth BT-270 radio in there too. I cant find much information about the crash. It shows up in the Action Center System Reliability report as Plug and Play Stopped Working. I submitted these reports for solution. It will just reboot out of nowhere, and not that time is important but it has happened in as little as 5 minutes or as much as 6 hours after turning it on. It doesnt seem to matter if I am using the mouse or not, or have any application running at the time. Yesterday I loaded up 3D Mark freeware and ran that about 10 times to see if it might be resources. No problems with that. I suppose I could wait until Microsoft possibly provides a resolution, or start removing installed items (in reverse order of installation) until the system is stable again. I have one week left before I will be far from an internet connection with this problem.

So as I said before, I have implemented a backlight keyboard solution for N71JQ.
The detailed instructions of this can be seen in the following link:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...ight-keyboard-implementation.html#post6567857 -
Resplendence Software - WhoCrashed, automatic crash dump analyzer
If the system is auto-restarting after crash then you can enable it to show you the BSOD. For that go to:
- In the windows explorer copy and paste this link: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System
- The system setting menu will appear. Click on the Advanced System settings
- In the window that pops up go to the section Startup and Recovery and press Settings.
- In the window that pops up go to section System Failure and uncheck the option Automatically Restart.
Now the system will not automatically restart on error. You will see the BSOD and you can read the error code. -
First post so be gentle. I am in the process of reading this entire thread and have got to page 71.
I just received my N71JQ today from Amazon. And I am impressed with the Laptop so far. Have not had a chance to do much with it yet but boot and start the creation of the recovery disks.
Have ordered a WD 500GB to replace the 2 included 320GB and a Intel N6200 to upgrade the network card.
The owners manual is a joke, I have never seen such a bad manual with a device of this quality and cost. Does a detailed manual exist?
And how do you access the bios? I am use to an Asus motherboard prompting for the delete key but I get no prompt.
What is the best and safest way to update the bios if needed?
Sorry if these questions have been answered but I have not ran across them or missed them in my reading so far! -
Just got the recovery disks made, took over 2 hours and 5 DVD's. Finally got to check out some things. According to CPU-Z mine does have the DDR3 1333 memory and bios 206. Don't know production date but can't be too old with this bios, so I guess there are still a few out there with the faster memory.
Now to finish the windows updates and figure out which of the bloatware to use and which to delete. -
In learning mode right now as Windows is still updating and have not had a chance to play so far. -
Yes you can access the bios by pressing F2 during bootup.
To update the bios you can use the EasyFlash utility in the bios.
Here is a guide on flashing ASUS notebook bios: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/174395-bios-update-guide-asus-notebooks.html -

The upgrade to 207 using easyflash went off without a hitch. -
So far my laptop is working as expected. Do not have the fan problem I have read about. Finally got all updates installed, that was time consuming. The recovery dvds took over 2 hours. System has been on for 10 hours under heavy load and no glitches yet. Like I mentioned before I do have the 1333 memory, seems very random as to what you get. The wireless connected without any problems. Now to attack the Bloatware, upgrade Office to 2010, and upgrade to Win 7 Pro. Busy day tomorrow.
All in all very well pleased with the laptop so far. The USB 3.0 works as advertised. -
-
In the desktop PCs that I built over the last years (all having ASUS mainboards inside) the flashing is usually done with easyflash. I don't like the winflash method. -

I don't know if it is some sort of new policy of ASUS to leave the users in dark with respect to what they changed with a certain bios or just the person who uploads these stuff to their website is too lazy. -

Has anyone installed the Intel Wifi Link 6200 card in the N71JQ? If so are there any potential problems to look out for. I have one ordered and it should be here Friday.
-
Finished reading all 131 pages of this epic (too hot to do anything outside) today.
I would still buy the N71jq after reading about all the problems. That said, I don't have any of the reported problems so far. The fan works as I would expect and similar to my previous laptop, no sudden speed changes and noise level is not bad. Speed ramps up and down with temperature as I would expect. Updated the bios without any problems, used a usb drive inserted before booting and used the easy flash in the bios. Did get a warranty card with the 2nd year of ADW if mailed within 60 days of purchase. My laptop came with the 1333 memory installed, this seems to a roll of the dice as to which memory is installed, spec call for 1066. No bad pixels in the display.
This discussion did help me decide to get the version with 2 Hard drives even though I plan to change them out for a single WD 500GB Black. Going to the single drive for weight, power and heat reduction. I do want the option to add another HDD at a later date and from what I have read this is not easy to do with the single hard drive version. Did not really need the Blue Ray but it is hard to find the 2 hard drive version without it. Costco might have been an option, but by the time I paid sales tax there was very little difference in cost.
I did a lot of research before I bought the N71JQ and wanted as "future Proof" of a laptop as I could get today. The USB 3.0 was one of the requirements for me as this will eventually replace esata. After getting it I would have liked to have seen the N61 in a side by side comparison as the N71 is not what I would really call a lightweight laptop.
Now to review all the BloatWare that is installed and see what I can remove.
Anyway, the N71JQ is one fine laptop and so far it has not disappointed me! -
It is better to remove the drivers for the old WLAN card before you intall the new one.
Also download the latest drivers for 6200 from intel website. The older ones were problematic, especially sometimes the card was not switched on when I turn on the WIFI switch in front of the notebook. This problem does not happen now with the latest drivers. -
What connect speed are you getting? I am currently getting 150 with the current wireless connection, my other wireless computer connects at 300. -
I am still waiting to get my 300Mbps WLAN router that will be provided to me by my new 25Mbits/Sec internet connection provider.
It got delayed because I could not exit my current DSL contract until mid of October. -
back to over clocking the cpu....has anyone tried it lately using this pll?
7/27/2010 - SetFSB information : Included MSI MegaBook X340(ICS9LPRS113AKLF), Packard Bell TJ-75("ASUS N61JQ").
edit:
love that backlit keyboard!! -
Let's see if somebody else will implement a similar solution. -
i dont know...that one you did was pretty damn impressive!
now if you can over clock the cpu on it...im sold.. -
What version do you guys have for your video card? I have downloaded the ati catylst driver update file but not quite sure if i needed to install it.
I have version 1.013 and the installation file updates to 1.012.
[I need to figure out why my video card does not allow hdmi connection to my hdtv.] -
I'm not sure maybe this was discussed somewhere on those more than 100 pages, but google search didn't get any result.
Currently I have to move my N71Jq from one town to another around every two weeks, it is not very often, but it's not very comfortable to trevel with it and some additional things on one shoulder. Can anyone recommend some backpack that this notebook will fit it? Most of the things I saw were either up to 17 inches or sometimes stated 17.4 support, but according to its size they won't fit N71Jq. Is there something designed for this size and proportions on the market? -
-
I have just started having a problem with my display. It looks like snow or static on the screen most of the time and it will change colors and has lines run through every so often. Has anyone seen anything like this?
-
I heard some other people having problems with dust entering behind the screen.
-
Swapped out the Seagate 320 (7200 rpm) for a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BEKT 500GB 7200 RPM and got the following results from HD Tune:
_____________________ Seagate_________WD
Transfer Rate
Minimum_________________44__________ 53.4
Maximum_________________93_________101.2
Average__________________73__________81.2
Access Time_____________17.0__________15.3
Burst Rate_______________55.0__________79.1
Pretty decent increase in performance. -
Definately not dust It comes and goes seems like an electrical issue either with the video card or monitor itself.
-
if your tech savey...then you can either...open the back panel and make sure the vga cable is connected properly or you can take off the front cover and check the vga connection there..
or
try the easy route...connect it to an external monitor or hd tv and see if the lines are still there.
if so..could be any of the above or the vga card is going bad... -
If it is the GPU then you should see the same problem, otherwise it is something with the monitor or connection cable.
Maybe you have to RMA it.
Opening the monitor is not recommended except if you have a very clean invironment otherwise some dust will end up behind the glass in front of the LCD. -
Is there a trick to getting the memory compartment cover off? I have removed the 3 screws but the cover appears to be stuck. Don't want to break it so I haven't put too much pressure on it yet. From looking at the disassemble manual and the user manual it should just come right off, but it doesn't.
Anyone else had this problem? -
-
You need to catch it from the side and puch it upwards. -
How is the card reader listed in Device Manager?
I can't find it, and how do you put a SD card in the adapter? For some reason I can't get the reader to work. -
Guess I've been messing with the laptop too much today.
Works fine when you stick the card in the right slot
I have been trying to get the ExpressCard Slot to read a SD card. No wonder I was having problems.
Time to go to bed -
I just bought mine at Fry's in CA yesterday. At the same time I bought a black backpack that they had on sale for $20 (after $7 mail in rebate). It fits in it just fine. But after I bought it (and chopped off the fancy logo thing) I found out taht it will fit in my old cheapo Walmart or whatever it was backpack that I carried my old 15.4" laptop in, only vertically instead of horizontally. That pack wasn't made for a laptop so it has no padding, but on the other hand it's more compact.
Two little questions:
The indicator light for bluetooth/wireless is very bright. Any way to shut it off or dim it (other than putting a piece of tape or a bit of glue over it)?
Why is the 1 and 6 key highlighted in white?
So far it's great. I've removed most of the bloatware. I hope I haven't removed anything important. Is there any way to get back any of the Asus bloatwares that I removed in case it turns out they weren't bloatware after all?
Oh, I bought two 4's ($250) at Frys to upgarde the memory and I stuck em in today. So far so good! -

Received and installed the Intel Centrino Adavaced-N 6200 today. Very easy, inexpensive (under $30), and worthwhile upgrade. Give you the option of 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz.
Went from 150 Mbps to 300 Mbps with the upgrade. After the installation I did have to change the 802.11n Channel width for band 2.4 from 20 Mhz only to auto under advanced properties for the device to get the 300 Mbps. Before the change it was at 130 Mhz.
