Does someone knows why my SSD Intel X25-M 80GB gets average read speed (with HD Tune) below 150MB/s, while in my ex desktop computer with X58 mobo the average read speed was above 230MB/s

Asus claims, that the onboard Mobile Intel HM55 Express Chipset provide SATA II with 3GB/s

So what is the trick here?

Just remember to install the Bios update from a flash drive, rather than from the hard drive!

The author of the above thread has updated it, to mention this point.

Well, called Asus up again today and they have told me the part will be arriving next week (not this week as they had promised).

Oh well, I guess it was my fault.

I've been able to use my laptop for a total of maybe two days since I bought it.

What ARE you guys doing that makes BIOS update so fragile? I've been updation BIOS for years, from the days when you had to boot a floppy until today's Windows utilities and never had a problem. Unless you're all breaking out half-way through, just to see what happens?

Forgive me if this has been covered already,

I did a clean install of Win 7 and all of the drivers have loaded properly with the exception of the Turbo Boost Technology driver. I get a message that says "your computer does not meet the minimum requirements". I looked in the bios (v.208) and I don't see any mention of turbo boost. Am I missing something?

Well Turbo Boost Technology is not a driver that you need for the notebook functionality. It is just a sidebar gadget which shows the status of Turbo Boost function.

You can try the latest version from here:
Processors — Intel® Turbo Boost Technology Monitor

Here is a guide and the tool needed to install a fresh copy of Windows on any OEM machine that came with pre-installed windows on it:
Installing Vista Clean, With No Crapware | directedge.us

This guide is for Vista, but it works in a similar way for Win7 also.

Thanks, Mr T. You're the man! Presumably that works just the same with W7 as Vista, right? So now if I do that (haven't read the instructions yet) + save my current setup to Acronis (as you recommended earlier) I will be able to reboot and restore my computer to its present bios-updated fan-fixed bloatware-free my own program-added condition even if all the hard drives crash - even tho I've been unable to burn the Asus recovery disks - right? Or would I still require a Windows 7 DVD, which of course I don't have?

Another question: Along with the bloatware I removed Asus Express Gate. Is it worth trying to put that back on?

I think this should work with Windows 7. I tried it before.
The tool need for making backup of licence is called abr. Download the windows 7 version of it from here:
ABR Beta With Windows 7 Support | directedge.us

Yes if you make an image of your C partition with tools like Acronis or Paragon Harddisk manager, then you should be able to restore your system to the current state from the image if you get some problems with the windows in the future.

I don't use the express gate also, and I have not installed it.

I believe the Express Gate application is on a ROM chip. You access it by pressing the far left button near the left channel speaker when the computer is off. I haven't checked out the Express Gate shortcuts in the All Programs list to see what they do, but there is an uninstall in there. Don't know if that wipes the program or not. Hmmm. I don't use it much, but if Win7 crashes it could provide you another way to access things like the internet if you need to.

No the ExpressGate is not on a separate rom, it is just installed onto the harddisk. Usually it is on the C drive.

The express gate used to be on a separate flash drive in some of the ASUS desktop mainboards, but the new ones also don't have that.
On the new desktop mainboards now it is also installed onto the harddisk.

    Hi,
Just registered after reading the most of the N71JQ thread. Bought an Asus X77JQ-TY003V 2 days ago overhere in The Netherlands, which (in my opinion) essentialy is a N71JQ . It's mentioned on the box, got a N series background after first Win7 install, and it's mentioned in the Computer properties, CPU-Z etc.
Do any of you know what the difference is with the N71JQ, except for the harddisk?

I do have one downside, and it is switching hyperthreading on or off. Any news on that?

Also, I have to mention I have the 207 BIOS and no fan issues so far. Have to say this is a nice laptop for the price and up till now I´m a happy user.

Makes sense. There is disk activity when it launches. My bad. I was reading about the Splashtop application, which is what ExpressGate is based on, and I seem to recall that it launches from a ROM.

I've bought this laptop yesterday. I turned it on and there were everywere artifacts. Windows desktop has artifacts, everything.

I've turned off PowerPlay and the artifacts are gone now. Anybody else with this problem, or how I can fix this with PowerPlay on? Or should I just return it?

Also, for some reason I dont have wifi at home (Belkin N1 vision) - wired works and Wifi from HTC HD2 works also. How can I fix this? It just says 'Gateway not avaible' - but it retrieves de DNS of a domain when using ping. After that it just timeouts.

Also, the laptop is getting really hot near the fan. I can't have my hand here for more than 10 secs. Is this normal? Temps are about 65C idle (i7) and 60C (5730)

The GPU/CPU temperaturess are normal for this notebook.

You should do some further tests concerning the artifacts.
It could be that the GPU is defective. I never experienced anything like that on mine.
Maybe try to update the GPU driver to 10.8 and then turn on powerplay to see if the artifacts are still there. Otherwise return it and get a new one.

I already tried that, still artifacts. I will just return it then.

Anyway, is there a N71 version without that Glossy screen? Is it somewhere customizable?

EDIT: I've fixed the WiFi issue now, it was regarding QoS. It was turned off in the router. I've put it on and the WiFi works now. Is there any chance to get it working without QoS? All clients works fine without QoS though, except the n71JQ

I'm on the market for an N71 that sells on Ebay and Costco.
I want reliability together with a great screen. Which of the three models should I buy?

    N71 - x1
    N71 - x2
    N71 - A1

Wish I was as brave as you.
I posted for help as to how (BABY STEPS) but the kind person who tried helping didn't make it the kind of baby steps I needed to follow. I read the Bios Update Guide I was referred to but that was way over my head too.
I guess I need pictures showing along with an explanation beginning with how to get into the Bios, what it looks like while in there, and what and when to click on?
Also, being I am on dialup, I have the fear of what if, of all times, I get knocked off? I have been lucky in not but it may just happen when you need it the most. What would happen then? Can go to wireless at our Library?

Guess I am stuck with the fan roar as I do not understand the "tech" words used. :(

Also----I am using house current all the time. Do you people leave your battery in all the time? I have mine charged but leave out of the laptop.

    But on Directedge it says:

    "Obtaining The Vista Installation Discs
The most important thing you need for this procedure is the Vista installation disc itself. Like many previous versions of Windows, the disc is often not shipped along with your computer in an obvious form. Sometimes it is hidden in plain sight, and other times it is hidden on the hard disk. It's also very possible it was not given to you at all. You need to obtain the disc using one of the following options...

MAYBE it's already on your hard drive...

    etc."

So then where is the Vista - I mean W7 - copy on our Asus?

ASUS does not provide a copy of Win7 disk, but it seems you get one from Micrsoft.
Have a look at the following post for details:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/6681619-post6148.html

If you have already some retail version of Win7 home premium, then you can use the same disk to do the installation.

I thought the guidelines I gave plus the Bios Update guide should be enough to make the bios flashing easy.
At the moment I don't have the time to write a more elaborated guide.

If you think it is too difficult, maybe you can ask some computer technician to flash it for you.

No, I don't have a copy that's accessible to me right now. It's not on the hard drive someplace? That's a big download.

Say, do you work for Asus, Mr Turbogear? If you don't you should. You're a one man tech support - and unlike the guys who answer the phone in India you actually know what you're talking about!

No I don't think it is on the Hard disk, and no I don't work for ASUS.

I am an Electrical Engineer and soon will get a PhD degree. ;)
Telephone tech-support is not a type of job I will like to do.

I like computers and helping people here in the forum is just a hobby for me. :p

You are right. The people who work on the telephone support for ASUS, usually have no idea what they are talking about.

Did you know that your computer running all the time and getting warm will actually cause your laptop battery to wear out sooner? It's true.

Can the gpu's on n73jq and n71jq can be compared yet ?
Is there enough info about 425m to know how much better or worse it is to the 5730 ?

Have a look at the following link from notebookcheck:
    NVIDIA Geforce GT 425M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

According to this, ATI 5730 has a better performance than the Nvidia 425m.

Around the keyboard the notebook is covered with rubberized dark brown colored material.

Actually on outside, there are brown colored lines forming a wave design on the black background. The outside to me looks more black than brown, especially when not exposed to direct light. The dominating color on the outside is black.

Thx, I'm a bit iffy on getting this due to it being brown, but at least it's not girlish brown :)
I'm grabing this one for my brother in law, he's off to college, I just don't wanna grab him a girly looking laptop :D
If the g73jq wouldn't have big difference between the gpu's and would be offered without blu-ray for lower price I think I could get him that.

Yes, v208 fixes the fan issue.
You can go directly to this new version. Usually if there any changes made in the previous versions, they will be also implemented in the latest version.

Hey there, I just noticed something about my N71Jq and wanted to ask if any of you others had this as well. I've had this laptop for 3 weeks and only just noticed it, so it's a pretty minor thing, but I just noticed certain colours (such as the standard grey that wikipedia uses) having a grainy texture to them. If you put the screen all the way back, you can clearly see certain colours being 'grainy' - moving grainy. Funnily enough, my last asus laptop (F3Jp) had the exact same thing only it was much worse until they fixed it in a bios update.

Can anyone else confirm that for me by going to the wikipedia homepage and taking a look at the grey parts?

These temperatures are quite normal for this machine.

Yes the new bios is a big improvement.
Me and Ken Lee from Gentech PC worked together for around 4 months in order to get this bios.
Actually the bios was designed by ASUS taking the tests I did into account. The fan profile was implemented according to my recommendations. :D

I used to own F3JP also around 2 years ago. Yes that one had the grainy screen problem, but it was improved later by a bios update.

On N71JQ, I don't have any grainy screen problems. I have been using mine for around 8 months now.

I think I'm gonan order the n71jq this week as it's on sale at ncix here in Canada and I'm wondering few things

I know bios updates help with heating, fan, some small problems, how do I check the bios version upon startup and which bios lowest bios version should be left alone ? I know you can brick while updating bios, so if it comes with certain bios version that fixed all major issues I will stick with it, just need to know which one was the most important one and later were just small updates.

Can I check and update bios before starting windows and doing whole configuration ?
And once you update bios, does it stay that way even if you format and install win from beginning ?

Yes the bios will stay even after you install windows. The bios is not located on HDD. It is in a separate ROM chip.

The bios version that fixes all the problems on this machine is the latest version i.e. v208.
I doubt that the machine will come with this version pre-installed, except if it is manifactured after end of July as this new bios was released in August.

You can check the bios version even before you enter windows by going into the bios. You can press F2 on startup and the notebook will enter the bios.
The version info should be on the first page.
