Hard drive question: Hard drive is divided up into C, D, F, and G. C drive is getting full so I've stored files in the completely empty F and G sections - but for reasons completely unknown to me these files periodically vanish. I'm now trying to put them into D drive. So far no files have vanished from D. Two questions: Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the files to disappear? It has never occurred on any of my other computers, nor has it occurred on the C drive. And is it a bad idea to get rid of the partitions and combine them all into one big drive, or get rid of one partition and combine one empty drive with the C drive? And if so, what's the best way of doing that?
-
Well, I can see that no one else is having that problem so it must be some software that's causing it. My latest suspect is Advanced System Care.

ASC is a free program. I've had it for quite a while but i just deleted it. Link:

What do you do when C drive fills up? I'm pretty foggy on hard drives and why they're partitioned the way they are with everything trying to crowd into the already crowded C. -
hi all. I was thinking on buying something like transcend TS4GSDHC10 for readyboost - will it cost its money? it's 4gb class 10 sd, it costs nearly the same as a piece of meat, but i need to know if it'll be useful.
right now my swap file is located at hard disk (standard wd3200bevt, 5400rpm/8mb/5.5ms/sata 3Gbs) and i was wondering if putting 5gb sd class 10 card into useless now card reader will boost pc up.
ps: for anyone who like me thinking whether you should or should not change thermal grease: do it without thinking! before changing temperature was 70/78 for CPU/GPU while idling and 88/98 under load, after changing it became 55/55 and 80/80. also, the piece of thermal interface on video memory is just awful, it's like 2mm thick. i wonder why foxconn workers hadn't put blanket inside the laptop. -

Wher can i get the latest driver and up grades for our ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730?

N71JQ -A1 model.
Came with bios 207, updated to 208 then downgraded the bios to v205 for the turbo option. I have noticed that even under 5% turbo, the speed of i7 720qm remains to bottleneck down to 1.6ghz via CPUID under all 4 cores where i have been reading a few forums that @ 5%, the lowest was around 1.8ish. The 1.6ghz renders having a 6.9 in my WEI. Has anyone expierenced the same issue? I look forward to achieveing a 7+ score on my WEI.

Does anyone have the service manual for this? Link to gentech is dead
-
Yah; I have it. PM me your email address and I will send it to you.

So I hear that the v205 bios allows the %5 turbo boost overclock for the cpu. Although this isn't much, I'm still interested in this increase because I'd like to see if I can increase the graphics quality a little in Starcraft II.
My question is, what's the different between the v205 and v208 bios? The v208 I have installed now, and it fixed the fan problem from 207, but does 205 have the same fan problem? And are there any other update drawbacks from reverting to the older version of the bios? -

Here's the link for the manual to disassemble the N71VN laptops -
Actually the v205 BIOS handles the fan quite nicely. It actually annoys because of it continous cycles during load but maintains the fan speed at a constant rate without too much noise during idle. During load, the fan kicks in and cycles and tends to be quite loud but when your gaming, i personally rarely notice it. But i am satified with this BIOS....manages the temps better than v208. temps have been ranging 60s on idle and no higher than 85 on load. And thats OC'd via MSI afterburner. I have upgraded the thermal paste and appears to be proven quite much better than ICD and AS5. I tend to reach danger 90s without the thermal upgrade. This laptop is a beast and currently still is compared to the more expensive G7+ series models from Asus.

Starcraft 2....With the OC via MSI afterburner, i was able to achieve 35 minimum fps to 145fps. avg 60s fps on level In utter Darkness. If you've played that level, you would know its a graphics hog. When max enemies it plummited down to 35fps no lower. Pretty darn immpressive with settings at very high. Apparently on ultra settings the HDR really kills the frames. I was able to achieve 80 fps avg with edited variables in SC2.

Great News to all N71JQ-X1 owners!
I posted here before, regarding the N71JQ-X1 2nd HDD board issue:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/457176-asus-n71jq-owners-lounge-184.html
This board from Asusparts.eu is the correct HDD board. I just received the package today and installed it on my N71JQ. I just swapped my HDD from the original bracket to the new one. Windows is running off the 2nd board no problem.
I hope to clarify that Asusparts took over 3 weeks to deliver it, so be patient with them! Good luck to any future people that want to add a 2nd HDD.
If you are too lazy to go back to my original post to find the link to the 2nd HDD board, its here:

Hey guys.
I've had my N71JQ (TY013V) for about a year now (got it in July '10), and lately I've been noticing a somewhat troubling degradation in performance.
It happens especially when playing games (Team fortress 2, Battlefield:Bad Company 2 etc); things will start to stutter, almost as if the game/cpu is grinding along. Worried that my laptop might be overheating, I checked temps with HWMonitor; it's running at an average of 93'C!
I attempted not too long ago to open up to get at the fans to check for dust, but I was too worried about voiding warranty (probably expired now) or doing damage, so I left it.
Has anyone experienced these issues before, or does anyone have any helpful advice on what I should do? (try cleaning fans again, calling up help support/returning the lappy for maintenance).
Thanks! -
i've said somewhere before that opening the laptop is really easy actually. as for voiding any warranties, i think the only warranty you'd void is if you removed/tampered with the yellow sticker on top of a screw that holds in the heat sink to the cpu. i didn't give a fack. i had to use a q-tip to clean my fan because i didn't have a compressed air can.
-
To: wattlendaub:
The void warrenty sticker is directly connected to the bracket of the CPU. You will only void the warrenty if you were to change the thermal paste on the CPU or change the CPU itself. Believe me, I've opened it up myself when I changed the thermal pasting. I highly recommend changing the thermal past to a better quality one. I chose Shin itsu x23-7783DThermal paste based on reviews compared with Diamond and AS5.
Temps have been working well for me ever since i added the thermal pasting. As i posted earlier, it never went over 85 degrees. idles at 65 degrees average. And this is with overclocked gpu with MSI afterburner. I was even considering drilling a 3 inch hole below the case that is directly below the fan similiar to the cooling solution of the g51 modification. Google it up, perhaps you can do the same. If you have the laptop for more than a year, I'd say dont even worry about the warrenty. I dont, and wont. Technology gets better every year.

that's nuts, i've never heard of people drilling holes into their laptops, but i guess i shouldn't be too surprised lol.
@yrb230032
i used AS5 paste when I took apart my n71jq. Do you find that the Shin itsu paste better? And honestly, I may consider drilling holes to see if it will improve cooling. Any ideas on where to drill the hole, how many, and how large? -
[Review] Indigo Xtreme vs. AS5, MX-2, IC Diamond, Shin-Etsu X23-7783D
Is a link to the review I read that convinced me to purchase Shin itsu x23-7783D. I personally have used AS5, and it takes forever to cure to even notice its results. Shin itsu is short, 4 hours. Noted to be effective next to the best TIM, the Indigo Extreme. The Hole I thought of drilling is a 3 inch hole, 1.5 inch diameter to the rear left side of the laptop right below the spinning fan.

Thanks for the advice!
I'll see what I can do about opening it up and reapplying thermal paste; I had limited success spraying compressed air through the vents and vacuuming out the fans. -
Hi,
@asdfasdf119
to install the HDD Board I would have to disassemble the whole Notebook, right? Or did you find a faster, more direct way to install this board.
Thank you very much!

Would anybody know how to change the amount of shared memory for VRAM?
Basically about 1.5 GB is going to VRAM which basically gives me 2768 MB of VRAM.
I don't think I require that much and it's probably causing a bottleneck somewhere due to less RAM. -
My laptop was also purchased in July 2010 and this problem only started about 2 months ago strangely after I reinstalled Windows 7. I've tried reinstalling the OS again and tried a wide array of drivers but to no avail.
I've opened up the laptop itself to make sure all the heatsinks and fans were clean and I've called Asus and flashed to the 208 bios, which was their only suggestion aside from sending it in for servicing.
I know there are definitely others that have had this overheating problem but is RMA'ing it the only option? Will applying new thermal paste solve the issue for certain? I've been forced to cap the GPU Core and Memory Clocks at 300 MHz via Power Options but it's basically rendered my laptop useless for games.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks guys -
I have been building computers for many years and I have never seen or herd of thermal past going bad.
double check your heat sinks is about all I can think of. -
does anyone use MSI Afterburner to overclock their GPU? I figured out how to do it by changing some of the values in the .cfg file, but the guy who tested his on another website only increase the core clock from 650 -> 845 mHz, leaving the memory clock alone.
I think he ran some benchmarks or tests for stability and overall got like ~10 fps increase, but obviously isn't much.
I'm just seeing if anyone else has used it and what they have done. I've only done the same thing as above, except I did 850 mHz. -
Can anyone point me to a spot that will indicate which processes within Task Manager don't actually have to be running? I'm having over heating issues (as are many it would seem), and I have actually fully taken apart and dusted (thanks for the diagrams posted on here!), and it's helped, but I figure the fewer processes running the better.
Thanks for any assistance! -
Hey guys first time poster on here!
I've owned the asus n71jq for about a year and I'm installing a new harddrive and OS because the old HD died on me randomly.
I was wondering what BIOs and drivers should I use?
Also was wondering if there was any way to OC my 5730?
thanks in advance! -
The latest BIOS 1.08 I believe is fine. You can get it from ASUS.

Farewell N71JQ and an interesting ASUS support story...
My last visit to the forum--thought I'd post my final feedback about the N71JQ before moving on. First the story--my N71JQ that I had about a year died a couple weeks ago. Remarkably, it was 13 days ~before~ the one year warranty expired rather than 13 days ~after~, as is traditional. (Actually, I may have extended the warranty to 15 months, but that's not really relevant). I RMA'd the laptop back to ASUS, and they sat on it for a week waiting for parts. Then they e-mailed me and said they wouldn't be able to get the parts anytime soon and would I accept a G73SW as a replacement?... So, a week later and I have a G73SW in place of the old N71JQ. It is recertified, but I figured the N71JQ would have been essentially "recertified" anyway. The G73SW costs $500-1000 more than the N71JQ. It has a bigger hard drive, 8gb RAM, a bigger battery, a back-lit keyboard, and a bigger touch pad. I had even taken the hard drive out of the N71JQ so I have an extra hard drive out of the deal. Pretty good support I thought, esp. given some of the opinions I've read about ASUS support.
So, my final thoughts on the N71JQ for anyone deciding whether to get one... I'm pretty certain I wouldn't purchase one again or recommend one. There are some really nice things about it, but two serious flaws: 1) The position of the power cord plug is absurd, and I'm pretty sure contributed to the failure of the computer, and 2) The maximum sound volume is way too low. With the G73SW I can now actually ~hear~ the movie while I'm washing the dishes. Also not a flaw, but I really like the back-lit keyboard on the G73SW. I learned very quickly w/ the N71JQ that it's impossible to use an un-lit keyboard in a dark room, even w/ the light from the screen.
Anyway, maybe this info will help someone and help repay the forum for the help it's given me. So long... -
When I close my N71JQ it, at some point, becomes unresponsive to 64bit Win7 and crashes. This obviously very annoying...
Does anyone have any ideas that would help me resolve the issue?
Thanks. -
Sfwood - Nice! And I sure do agree with you about the pathetic sound volume on the 71, my least favorite thing about it - and weren't they hyping this model as having especially good sound quality?

Hey folks, I'm having a problem with my N71 running hot. Even when I'm simply browsing the web normally, checking facebook or something, my web browser will start to hang and everything kind of slows down. I also experience some garbled audio from any music that is running whenever the unit starts to heat up. I can physically feel the heat from the vent whenever this happens (gets pretty hot) and the fan runs on high constantly.
The thing that is irritating is that I took this notebook in to get serviced for the EXACT same problem about 6 months ago and the repair guys told me that they basically cleaned up the internals, which fixed the problem 100 percent. Is it really possible that in so short a time the unit has become too dusty inside AGAIN to properly run a web browser?
I swear, I like this computer but I've had 5x the hardware issues with it than I've ever had with any notebook... -

hi all im looking at putting in a 6300 wireless card and want to install the 3rd antenna ive got the dissambly guide but how do i open the back of the screen
-
no worries figured it out 2 little screws and it clips apart
-
Which would be the best card to get? The 6300? Or are there any other cards to consider?
Also, from your post above, noted you need to open up the back of the screen to access the wireless card? Would you be able to go into more detail?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!
EDIT: Was just looking around Crucial, etc, and noticed RAM is quite cheap at the moment, 8GB kit for this laptop for around US$45. I presently have the standard 4GB that shipped with the computer, and to be honest its doing the job for me. Am I just getting a bit ahead of myself in thinking I would need 8GB (don't really use the computer for anything too taxing). But then again, US$45 for 8GB of ram is tempting..... -
I orginally was going to just get the 6230 due to the fact that theres 2 existing aerials. But on further thought I went for the 6300 which isnt that much more (picked mine up for less than $50). I didnt need to open the back of the screen up to get to the wireless card just to install the third antenna. The 2 existing come from the wirless card through the hinge into the back of the screeen. To get to the wireless is in where the ram is.
4gb is heaps for most but I upgraded to 6gb. Personal preference really. -
Thanks guys.
Actually I've been having a few problems with my wifi and my bluetooth recently, but just keep on dropping out. I've installed updated drivers, but the problem still persists?
Think its a hardware or a software problem?
I guess if its a hardware problem, time to take the beast in for servicing? -

Hey guys. I've read through some of the help you've given to other owners and was hoping to get some help myself
The big issue: the thing thinks it is changing from AC mode, to Battery mode, CONSTANTLY. I have turned all of the windows notifications off, but I can not find way to turn off the built in asus notification that pops up in the middle of the screen. So my real question is "is there a way to turn off these notifications?" I would be very grateful for any help as this makes doing most things on this computer unbearable.
Before you start trying to figure out why it is doing this, it is because when I replaced my charger port (due to the fact that it came unsoldered because of its poor placement next to the heat sinc) I managed short some stuff, probably burnt my battery up, and am now running it in AC mode (with the battery no longer capable of being charged). I am pretty sure I could fix this by buying a new battery, but I don't really need to as I am fine with having it always plugged in, I have a charger at work, and at home, and those are the only places I take it.
So I am not looking for a way to fix the power issue, just a way to suppress the notifications that are popping up on my screen every 2 seconds. -
Have you tried by removing the battery completely, just to make sure that the battery was the issue, because if the problem is the adapter or the jack, then you'll either need a brand new adapter or to RMA the laptop. If the battery is indeed the issue, you can uninstall power4gear. That will remove the notifications, but also the custom Asus power plans.
-
Actually right after typing my original post a colleague standing behind me also recommend I take the battery out. Doing so stopped the notifications, so the problem is definitely the battery (and is fixed by taking the battery out).
It is good to know that uninstalling power4gear will get rid of those notifications though, if the problem happens again, or if I ever want to put the battery back in.
Thanks -
Frustrating time with Asus, following my issues with Wifi, Bluetooth and USB 3.0.
Took computer in for servicing. They checked everything out and did a system restore, said it was a software problem. I'm thinking Doh, why didn't I just do that. Checked everything at the service centre and everything was fine.
Get home and no bluetooth again.
Grr. Going to have to take the thing in again today.
