I finally got around to the disassembly of my laptop for cleaning and replacement of the thermal paste. I used the Arctic Silver 5 system which has a cleaner and conditioner step which is supposed to insure maximum thermal conductivity. I followed the guidance in the Disassemble_N71VN_Series_Chapter_02-v1_0.pdf document and it all went well. Just so anybody who might use this document knows, the order of disassembly presentation is correct if followed from beginning to end and then reversed for reassembly. Obviously you can avoid some of the steps for pieces that don’t require further disassembly. Lately, my exhaust fan has been making some noise when it first turns on. I checked out the possibilities of effecting repairs on the fan, but it is more or less a sealed unit. I was able to clean some surface dust from the impeller and make sure there was no dust built up inside the heat transfer section. I will probably search around the internet to maybe find a replacement for some time in the future if the fan motor fails. The Arctic Silver installation instructions say that it will take quite a few thermal cycles before maximum conductivity is achieved. I don’t notice any improvements first off, but I have yet to thermally tax the unit with a BD or DVD disk. If the temps drop from what they were before or the movie test is successful, I will update my report with that information.

I own this laptop for ~4 years now. And I have this behaviour like you described every 6-12 month. At first it used to hang, then probably a year ago it started turning off from time to time and it was really hot at those moments.
At least two of such periods were fixed by reinstalling OS and loosing all installed applications.
Once I got rid of my antivirus and replaced it with another one (it helped, but not for long, probably that's wasn't problem).
Once I tried to suck out dust with vacuum cleaner through vent, and it helped that time really good, but that doesn't work for me any more. Later I disassembled it and there was not that much of a dust, after using it for 2 years, I expected to see much more dust in it.
I used to blame HDD (installing, unistalling some software could fix this problem), so I replaced it with a faster and bigger one, still have this issue today.
I used to blame RAM (despite all the memory tests that I run), but some time ago I replaced it with a new one, and still can see this problem, this decreases probability that it causes problems
Then approximately 6 month ago I noticed that it hangs quite often when I'm using power saving option called either maximum performance or something like that, I switched to Entertainment and could use it for 6 month without problems. And yesterday I've got this problem back... It behaves like overheating and using cooling pad got me through yesterday, but today it does it right from the start and nothing helps. It had very little chances to get that hot (2-5 minutes from booting), keyboard and vent doesn't seems to be hot enough for overheating. So maybe it has to do with old CPU thermal paste not working as it should (in this case it could heat faster, but still think that it is too fast) or maybe I have problems with cooler, but it seems to be spinning. Looks like cleaning and thermal paste is my last option and if that doesn't resolve my problem, I'll have to look for some replacement -

Hi, Hopefully some people are still monitoring this thread!
I have a N71JQ that wont charge or power up from either power source (turns on for 2 seconds then turns off). I was going to order a new Main-board but there are a few different part numbers.
- I have the Mainboard with part number PN-60-NYDMB1000-D02 (R07A) (sticker on RAM slot)
I can only find boards for sale with the ending part number differing.. eg instead of D02 (R07A) they are C01 (O200A) etc
Anyone have an idea of the differing part numbers? I assume they are revisions but didn't want to get one that isn't the same spec as the one I am replacing. -
Hi everybody.
I'm having trouble connecting to my NAS via LAN and the internet via Wifi at the same time. Whenever I plugin my ethernet cable, wifi gets disabled. Does anybody know a way around this?
Thanks in advance! -

But I'm annoyed. I bought this laptop to use it. But now, after doing a few days of intensive video encoding about 6 months ago, the cooling system appears to have mostly died because I cannot seem to do anything now, before the fan comes on full blast e.g. within about 10 seconds of browsing the web. So I'm lucky to get 1min into a youtube video before the GPU seems to stuggle and start dropping frames massively to the point where the video becomes unwatchable. Was I wrong to actually use my laptop to do some video encoding? Was I supposed to buy this laptop, which had a fairly good CPU for the time, and then not use it??? I mean whats the point having a good spec laptop if you can't actually use it (without the cooling system dying fairly quickly as has been the case here).
Anyway, having seen the teardown document I am considering opening up to regrease the CPU and GPU.. this seems like quite a major undertaking so I have some questions before I begin:
- I can't tell if the teardown gets you to the CPU or GPU.. or they are on the same chip?? I don't know if one or both is the problem so I best reseat them both?
- Is re-greasing the chips likely to restore cooling function 100% or have I fried something else too?
- Conductive or non-conductive thermal grease? I have Arctic Silver 5 or Ceramique 2 to hand.
- Is there any additional cleaning/maintenance I can do with the laptop torn down to improve airflow/cooling performance? (Az Wx Guy you mentioned some other dusted parts, so I think thats a yes!)
- How long does the teardown take?
- Is this a waste of time that is going to kill my laptop!?
Thanks in advance for any advice! -
Hi, I'm helping a friend with his N71JQ-XT1.
a bit of background: when he gave it to me it wouldn't boot from the HDD. I ended up doing a bios reset and now the machine boots fine.
However now the issue is that when I shut it down from the Windows menu the fan keeps running at full speed.
The HD LED on the front shuts off but the LED under the power button and LED for Wifi both stay on.
I've read elsewhere that a bios update would fix this, but it seems to be at the latest level (208) I can find on Asus's support page.
At this point the only way to shut it down fully is to hold the power button down for 10 seconds.
Any suggestions on what I can try next? -
2. Tough to say for sure. The fact that your fan is running at full speed so soon after power on indicates you probably have a compromised thermal path between the chips and the heat pipe. The fact that it still operates means permanent damage probably has not been done. The AS5 actually takes several heat/cool cycles to optimize its thermal conductivity, something like 50 to 200 hours of use. I noticed much more stable temperature readings right away, which continue to this day.
3. I believe the Arctic Silver 5 is non-conductive electrically but slightly capacitive according to the product data sheet. There are some SMTs exposed around the CPU core which may or may not be electrically isolated, so I would use the Arctic Silver 5. Both of the chips have an integral plastic mask that is cut to allow the core plate to pass through and somewhat prevent the spread of heatsink paste to other parts of the chip. I had quite a mess to clean up from a factory motherboard replacement. If you follow the instructions carefully you will be able to apply an exact amount of paste and avoid overfill. One other thing worth mentioning. There is a companion product called ArtiClean which is recommended to thoroughly clean and prepare the core and heatsink surfaces for the AS5 paste. I used this two-part cleaning system and it works very well.
4. The fan is almost a one-piece deal with separate portions of the squirrel cage and motor mounts heat sealed together. The blower assembly is then taped to the heat exchanger. You can fish out pieces of dust that are caked around the inside of the squirrel cage and embedded in the fan blades. Pay particular attention to the inside surface of the heat exchanger (visible through both sides of the blower intake ports) where a fair amount of dust has probably accumulated. My blower motor has started to make some noise when I first turn it on. I took a quick look around the internet for a replacement and found one from Taiwan for about USD$12.
5. I worked slowly and meticulously, as is my method for all repairs, and I believe it was the better part of 8 hours before I was powering the laptop back up. I followed the instructions in Disassemble_N71VN_Series_Chapter_02-v1_0.pdf precisely and in a step by step fashion which is the correct order for disassembly and the reverse for reassembly. I created screw schematics as I went along, laying out paper schematics to diagram and contain each screw so that they get back into the same hole they came from. Most of the time was spent cleaning off the old thermal paste, which was probably a 2 hour job. There are quite a few separate assemblies that you have to remove and then position so you can remember their orientation for replacement.
6. If you go about this carefully and have a good selection of different sizes of Phillips-head screwdrivers, you should be able to do it yourself. If it seems too daunting, then I would look for a reputable repair facility. There is mention in some older threads on this forum of a facility that others have used to upgrade CPU and GPU chips, as well as getting the thermal paste replaced with Arctic Silver 5. The name escapes me at the moment but you should be able to search for it. Good luck.RowanDDR likes this. -
Hi there. I am a lurker here, have owned my n71jq for 4 years, and am generally quite happy with it. Haven't had any thermal issues yet, but it is interesting to see that they are cropping up. I bought the Asus because my old HP died due to thermal issues - well known but not well acknowleged by HP. I am not looking forward to the day I have to open up the Asus and clean it out...
What I am interested in right now is bluetooth connectivity. I would like to stream music from my computer to a bluetooth device that feeds my stereo. The computer can see the device, and it has paired with it and installed it as a speaker, but I can't seem to figure out how to direct the audio output to the bluetooth device. Nothing in the control panel under "sound" lists the bluetooth speakers. I have also never been able to do anything useful between my PC and my android phone, although I have successfully paired to the phone and it shows up in the list of bluetooth devices. The phone has no problem sending music to the speakers, but the PC doesn't seem to have any success. The bluetooth services window for the speakers says that it should be acting as a speaker, but I don't know how to connect Winamp or any other media player to it.
When I try to open the "Control" window for the bluetooth devices, I get an error message that says that I should restart the computer and/or the bluetooth device, but this doesn't help anything.
If anyone has been successful in doing this, I would really appreciate hearing what they did. -
-
I'm thinking about buying a BT dongle (~$10) and using that, but I am not sure I can re-direct the output from Winamp anywhere other than the soundcard on the laptop. I think this may be the problem. Even winamp may be a problem, because it is no longer supported, but maybe I will see if I can find a winamp forum that might have an answer. And I really don't want to go to a different player.
Thanks for your insights. It appears that the technology is moving faster than our old, four-year-old computers can keep up... -
Turns out that there is a HUGE, active Winamp forum, and it is possible to use BT speakers, if the OS has them. I think there is updated drivers available for the N71jq, or at least newer ones that might work. More to come.
-
Hmmmm... seems that there IS a driver update, which I downloaded a long time ago. Unfortunately, I get an error message that the update program cannot detect the BT device, and therefore will not install the driver updates. It is now starting to come back to me- I really did not need it 3 years ago, but want it now. Has anyone had this sort of problem?
-
Success! There are two BT driver upgrades at ASUS, one is a BT Azurware upgrade, while the older one is a generic BT driver. The generic driver can be installed, and it allows the BT speakers to be recognized by Winamp. I thought that I might be able to install the Azureware upgrade after the generic one, but that consistently fails, giving a message that BT is not installed or is not working.
Well, at least that problem is solved.. -
There was one other BT device I use occasionally, a Motorola H390 BT headset. It paired up nicely and even mutes the speakers when operating. I use it for Skype. I'm using the Azurware upgrade.

Mine is now nearly 4 years old, idle temps for gpu are at 60, fans are kicking in while browsing the web at 70, i've seen it reach 108 celsiuswhile gaming (league of legend).
I've tried blowing air through the vents, then blowing on the mobo trying to reach more spot, but temps have'nt changed. Should I try dismantling it some more to change the thermal paste? Is it a sign that my card is about to die? -
I don't really play much on my 4-year old N71JQ, and not sue whether it is a sign of dying GPU, but it is definitely worth to try to replace thermal paste.
Thermal paste on my CPU and GPU was hard as a rock when I tried replacing it and it was a tough thing to remove the old one. And it definitely didn't work as it should because its dried completely and obviously didn't allow heat to flow from CPU/GPU to the cooler as good as it should.
After replacing it, temperatures dropped, at first I was shocked because it was silent, so fan didn't start immediately which means that it runs much cooler.
However it didn't solve all of my problems, I still have 58-68 C during ordinary browsing and it can easily go to 82-83 if I try to compile a couple of projects inside visual studio and do browsing at the same time. And since my N71jq often stops working at around 83-85, I suspect that I didn't apply it properly, since it was the first time I tried to do such operation, and I hope it will be better on the second attempt. -
Thanks for your input, I'll order some then, and probably apply it during christmas, when I won't be having school

Glad it worked for you, Bilbo Baggins, but what you used was just compressed air:

My Asus is still going strong, though it just gave me a scare by first losing the internet and then not shutting down and then not starting up. I started it up again and pressed F1 and then Windows 7, and now it's AOK again, at least for the time being, knock on wood. -
I would say that there is no substitute for a good cleaning and replacing the thermal paste. My laptop continues to run cool and be trouble free. Werewolf (THERE wolf ...), you might want to do a Win 7 restore and then see how it behaves. I've done it twice now with wonderful results. Just make sure you pull everything off that you want to keep.
-
Well, knock on wood again, but it's been running good since then. But thanks for the tip, in case I need it. How does one do a Win 7 restore?

Taking another step in the long and productive life of my N71jq. Ordered a replacement Li-Ion battery pack. I use the CPUID hardware monitor application to keep track of component temperatures and other information, and the indicated battery wear level is now almost 50%. The existing battery has a date stamp of 03/2010, so that is over 5 years of service. Replacements are pretty cheap compared to other laptop batteries I have replaced in the past. Like $35 or so. This computer wasn't really designed to operate on battery for very long, which is typical for its desktop replacement design. It functions more like an UPS than a portable power source. This laptop isn't the type you could quickly whip out at an airport to check email anyway.

I feel the same way with the P570WM
But it's nice to have it there if you need it.

Battery replaced, and after some minor glitches it appears to be working good. Almost 1 1/2 hours of runtime estimated by the system. I ordered from Dr.Battery, which is probably just as good as any other source. Not quite sure what was causing some subsequent strange behavior, which I will describe in a moment, but after several deplete-recharge cycles it has stabilized. When I first installed the battery I left the computer off and charged it until the light turned green. Then when I turned it on, the indicated charge level was 100% and I thought all was well. After several days of use, I noticed that the charge light was blinking alternately orange and green. This was while it was plugged in. Never saw it do that before. Cursored over the battery status and it read 96% and plugged in, not charging. I unplugged the AC mains and observed the state of charge. Even after 30 minutes on battery had elapsed the battery status still said the same thing. So I powered it down, flipped it over and removed-reinserted the battery. This would fix the odd charge light indication and resolve a reasoable state of charge. I had to do this a couple more times before it stopped just recently. I also checked the readings in my CPUID HWMonitor application, and I think the problem arose when the full charge capacity was slightly above the designed capacity. That might be why after several recharge cycles it settled down.

Is it an official battery or 3rd party? Third party batteries may have odd firmware issues.

Hey guys, a bit of a question I had regarding this particular model.
So I've owned an ASUS N71JQ for quite a long time. It was originally intended as a portable gaming machine since I had no permanent home. But what with game requirements going up I'm not sure how long it's going to work with the same old specs.
I had bought it roughly five years ago, following are a few specs:
Difference from standard specs is that I have 4 GB RAM, W7 basic, 500 GB storage and Non-blu ray optical disk drive.
So my particular question is, how long does this machine have before it stops working completely and beyond all repair. Also what all can I upgrade in this machine at this point if anything, even RAM? -
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It was probably a firmware glitch then, but if it's happy now then hopefully you wont get more
As for it being a gaming machine there is nothing much that can be done, if you are running low on ram and want a snappier system then a ram upgrade plus SSD will speed it up. -
People please help
urgently need a full dump of the BIOS to live N71JQ Notebook
in my officially dead bios after upgrade from the site asus
ready to pay
translated from on Google Translate -
If I'm reading your post correctly, it sounds like you may have "bricked" your laptop due to an unsuccessful BIOS flash. I did the same thing with mine when it was only two weeks old. Since the BIOS chip is soldered to the motherboard, it will require an RMA to ASUS for the repair. Mine was covered under warranty. I don't know how much it might cost. Good luck.

you have a laptop N71JQ ?? can send a full dump bios ??? in service center ready to make eto.no they have a complete dump .translated from on Google Translate -

Try contacting Asus directly or your reseller about getting an official replacement.

Laptops have come a long way since then it's true.

Starting to get some early signs of hard drive failure. What do you guys think, should I replace it, or is it time to get a new computer, maybe a desktop this time as I'm no longer constantly traveling and I now use this one like a desktop anyway, and when I do travel I now take a tablet? On the other hand, it's been doing everything I need it to do.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Why not both? It's always nice to have a mobile device and replacement HDD is not expensive.
-
Yes, you're right, Meaker.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's been a long time since I have worked with desktop parts for myself, it was fun working on the dock I made for that reason. Have fun with whatever you decide to do
-
I never had a desktop before, Meaker, only laptops, but like I said I use this Asus as a desktop now so I guess it makes more sense to look at a desktop next, no?
