I took some pretty consistent readings between the AW17 r4 and the GX501. Both read about 40dB at my ear level. At the exhaust the GX501 was a little louder though. In their defense, the exhaust noise is almost projected backwards because of the flap, so there's little or no reason to worry about that unless you're using it at a table across from someone.
As for the tone/pitch, I found the GX501 to be slightly more appealing, but it's mainly because of the flap pointing it backwards - I think it dampens the shrill a little better than the AW17. In the end, I don't really think it's that drastic a difference. AW does a really good job with the noise imho, and if you repaste and fix the heat issues, it's surely even better than the GX501.
Just to give everyone an update - After a solid 3 weeks, I don't think this machine is for me. "Think" is the key word here though. I still may keep it but I need to be sure and need more time to make the final call. It's a really nice machine and suits most of my needs, but there are a couple areas that I need a little more. Almost exclusively the reason being the battery life - 1-1.5 hours of productive work is not enough time for me. The other reason is the enthusiast in me wanting a little more juice out of the CPU and GPU. I could also use a second M.2 slot or a 2.5" bay. All these things combined are a tough pill to swallow for me to sacrifice in order to be a little more portable. I am ok with 17" laptops though, so my available options are much more wide open than others.
My sights are on the Aorus x7 DT now. I was thinking of going back to the AW17 and just dealing with the vbios/thermal issues the hard way, but with the Aorus coming out in a couple weeks, I figured I'll try that one first. I think that's going to be a nice balance between portability and power for me. Again though - that's just me.
I do still stand by my opinion that the GX501 is a pretty nice machine overall. If you can get past the cost and battery life, it's a really great buy. I can see how some are still arguing that it's a rip off for them crippling the GPU. But until someone finds a 15" laptop that's that thin and delivers more power, I don't think price arguments can be relevant just yet. The fact is, you're paying more for less in terms of power, but also in size and weight - a trade off some people are ok with. In the end, it's up to the purchaser to decide if that's worth it because, let's face it - those that purchase Clevo + AW are not the same as those that purchase Razer,MSI GS or this machine. Best of luck to those buying this one though. I may not be keeping it, but I would 100% pick this over any Razer laptop, if that's your other choice. -
I see,
Thank you, the 120Hz panel in the GL502VS is B156HAN04.3, looks like there isn't a big difference between the two. -
Hmm, I bought a Clevo, AW and this one

No, this one is not for oc the cpu. However, if one seriously wants to oc the cpu one needs to keep away from all bga systems in the end. For me, the cpu is fast enough for gaming and also office work. I never intended to oc the cpu and do not have a need for it. In essence it is a portable gaming monster. And in my eyes it is what the RBP should have been from the beginning. But the RBP is flawed in many ways. This unit is quite and runs solid as a rock even with oc gpu. If you accept for whom this unit is meant for I can only find one real con: battery life. However, I can accept the poor battery life because I hate Optimus and love gsync, so this tradeoff is ok for me.

So, anybody went for the cheaper 1070 Max-Q option?
https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-GX501VS...rd-20&linkId=2af031943a45746e8162c65659a37782
It's $400 less, though it also gets only 256 GB of storage. Really curious to see how the gimped 1070 performs. Hopefully, it's also quieter to offset the performance loss.hmscott likes this. -
I'm not sure if this will be a good price or not but I should have two systems brand-new available for sale with the GTX 1080 Max Q for 2450 i'll have them available in about a week and a half

That's the million dollar question what exactly to you get for 1070MQ performance? 1060 level ? slightly better?
From reports the 1080MQ version is pretty quiet for a gaming notebook not sure how much more quiet...?
Personally even though I think the 1080MQ model is expensive it is still a better value than the 1070MQ in my eyes just because you get better performance, is it $400 better? That's up to you. -
I'll have my first system tomo morning any tested needed to be run ?
I'm really considering flashing a 150w TDP Bios to it

I just received mine today. Does anyone know if this has a battery protection option like AW? Or a flexicharger like Clevo? I can't seem to find anything in the ASUS BIOS.

Generally it would be obvious, not finding it suggests it doesn't have this feature. There's usually a pop up dialog from each Asus service app to let you know about it, so look around in the apps installed list for Asus service apps.
The manual is the first place I suggest people look, but unfortunately Asus hasn't uploaded a manual yet, there's nothing in the "Manual" section or the "Drivers" section to download
https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-ZEPHYRUS-GX501/HelpDesk_Download/
https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-ZEPHYRUS-GX501/HelpDesk_Manual/
I guess keep looking there... you could send an email to Asus support and ask them (also tell them there's no manual posted), register the laptop and open a ticket.Last edited: Jul 19, 2017 -
Yeah I was hoping that I was just overlooking it :/
Checked for a manual earlier as well and there doesn't seem to be anything in there like you pointed out. I know they offer a battery health charging app on their recent Zenbooks and was hoping this would have it as well. Hopefully they can add it in at a later date.

If it is even possible to doe this; i would strongly suggest applying a good thermal paste. Very likely ASUS uses the stock OEM stamp on junk paste.Cerreta28 likes this. -
I was thinking about using some liquid metal

I would stick with Grizly Kryonaut GPU + CPU. Liquid metal is far to risky on GPUs, and since the CPU isn't overclockable, Grizly should handle it fine
If you decide LM, you should check with ASUS if it voids warranty -
Do you think normal pace would void warranty
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
ThatOldGuy Notebook Virtuoso
I don't think so. Should be easy to tell with normal paste though. Only will void warranty if there are "warranty void if removed/broken" stickers.
With LM it could void warranty simply because its risky and technically toxic. -
I think there might possibly be a warranty sticker over one of the screw holes on the CPU cooler

That would suck. Limiting the machine to the inferior OEM paste really limits potential (and quietness that they desire)
Nothing a heat gun and razor blade can't solve though

Thanks for the advice hehehehe !! Think i should try it hmmmm

Is it easy to take off ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Didn't try. If you warm it up though, it should come right off. Hairdryer will do the trick
Sent from my FRD-L14 using Tapatalk -
Ok I'll take a look tomo .. was it easy to take apart up to that point ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Not hard but a little tricky. Once you get the screws off, use a plastic opening tool at the back edge by the hinge. You have to do it with the lid open, so it's a real pain in the ass. Remember, the keyboard lifts up and there are cables underneath.

Ok thanks for the advice !!! I'll keep you all posted if I do a relate tomo

. I'm really upset I might just go with a eurocom t5

T5? I thought it was called the F5, no? What's the difference?
Bah!, shipping sucks no matter who sent it, if the delivery doesn't make it.
What about picking it up at the distribution center? Here in the US we can do that up till 8pm-9pm-10pm - depending on location, and they are open Saturday till 2pm.
Maybe give them a call and track down what depot / truck is holding it?Cerreta28 likes this. -

Interesting profile, the lack of resting area for your wrist could be a bit of a challenge if you're using a desk or table which isn't deep.
One of the amazon reviewers highlighted that thermal throttling was an issue. Can anyone who has this laptop actually confirm it throttles under load or not? https://www.amazon.com/review/reviews-lightbox//ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_img?ie=UTF8&asin=B071XDXLPGLast edited: Jul 21, 2017 -
That guy with the review of throttling, could easily fix that by 1. turning on his AC in the house! 2. decrease the core voltage Duh! 3. repaste and repad. 3 however is not required if you just undervolt.

These both are gaming laptops but totally different beasts, if your looking for pure performance sure the F5 is great but then why even bother looking at the ASUS, it defeats the purpose of the thin and lite gaming.
Good luck on your decision. -

Not really, most people assume this though.
It is relatively thick @ 1.6" or 39mm. But it is only 1.75 LBS heavier than the ASUS (6.6 vs 4.85 LBS). The EVOC 16L-G / Eurocom tornado F5 is the lightest no compromise Gaming Laptop available. The weight to power ratio is very impressive.
(it is also over 1LB lighter than the compromised/gimped Razer Blade Pro). -
Apparently I can't figure out what the ROG button does next to the numlock key, and I left the manual at home. Anyone have any ideas? Is it whisper mode, which apparently isn't yet available?
-
It's supposed to open the ROG control center. If you did a fresh install, it won't work until you install the software.
Sent from my FRD-L14 using Tapatalk -
Ok, I'll give that it's not that much more heavy but I forgot to add the build quality is far superior on the ASUS also, not saying the F5 has bad build quality but putting them side to side the ASUS looks far more impressive but that is subjective.
-
Gotcha. I assume you mean ROG Gaming Center? Is there much point in installing it on this model? I'm not sure I'd want to use many of its features. Maybe packet prioritization once in a blue moon.
-
No point to it at all, in my opinion. I uninstalled it on mine and the button forever did nothing.
-
Cool. I guess I found an alternative to the button just doing nothing. I used Asus notebook keys to turn the button into a play/pause button for now.
